We were looking forward to bacon rolls and coffees on a bracing October morning. Our destination café was closed so we thought we’d try Abbey’s instead. We entered to find the place entirely lacking in customers other than one man and a dog. There were...two woolly-bonneted staff behind the counter. We asked if they did bacon rolls. ‘No, just what’s on the menu’. We looked at menu and saw French toast with bacon and maple syrup. £8.50. My ‘plus one’ wasn’t enthused. Seeing multiple bagel options I asked if we could perhaps have a bacon bagel. ‘No. There’s just what’s on the menu’, came the unsmiling response. We moved on. It was all a bit ‘League of Gentlemen’.
This café has a promising location, the interior is beautiful in pared back Scandi style. Perhaps their mandatory bagel selection is fabulous? I can’t say as we didn’t get that far. If the frosty reception we experienced comes as standard I don’t see how it will survive in a location peppered with so many much friendlier competitors. Maybe they were just having a bad morning? I wish them well and hope they can learn from their customer feedback as I imagine running a café in Covid circumstances can’t be easy.More
