Hungry and tired on a Sunday evening we walked into this "pub" with no reservations and the bar was loud. I wanted a quiet dinner and was feeling rather crabby. I spotted the dining room out of the corner of my eye and the receptionist was able to seat us at a cozy table for two.It was pleasantly quiet on... More

My wife and I visited Edinburgh for the Military Tattoo and, while we were exploring, we decided to stop for a snack, we had eaten in the Conan Doyle the year before so decided to return. We were seated swiftly, the staff noticed that my wife is pregnant and made a point of getting her sat down as soon as... More

We expected the place to be busier on a Thursday lunchtime in the middle of the festival, but we're happy to get a corner table for a family catch up. Great selection of beer, lovely menu with something for everyone. Generous portions, lovely sea bass and proper scampi. Adjustments to one of our dishes was accommodated without fuss. Staff were... Tim the barman was very friendly and welcoming as were the waiting staff. Initially only called in for a drink but after seeing the food menu we decided to eat. We were not disappointed, the cheddar mushrooms were really tasty as ware the nachos, vegi burger and haggis. We will definately be back.

Have been here before and had a lovely meal. Returned and this time meal very poor. Personally would have binned it rather than serve it. Very busy and festival time. Staff very polite and obviously didn't charge. Others ate their meal but food only warm and we had to wait some time to be served. Really disappointed. Can't comment on... More

Lovely wee pub near the Playhouse Theatre. We stopped in past for some flavoured gin and tonics. Great selection of gins available. Recommend!

The festival venues offer lots of good shows but the beer is pretty dire and expensive. After a show at Stand 5 we walked down the street and found the Conan Doyle, selling craft beer and special gins in a lovely comfortable pub with excellent friendly staff. We also had a couple of their snack menu sandwiches, the steak and... More

A wonderful old building decorated much as it was when the man it was named after was a patron in the late 1800's. The atmosphere is engaging and the food and service excellent. The haggis I had was great and the spinach pie my partner had was also delicious. Traditional Cranachan for me and frozen rhubarb parfait for her topped... More

A nice cozy upscale pub you climb into from the street. Obviously popular with locals and visitors alike. I did not dine on this visit but will vouch for the well kept ale. There is a small display of memorabilia at street level as you enter and a statue of Conan - Doyle's great detective is located across the street.... More

What a great pub meal post movie. Friendly service, great atmosphere where you really feel like you're in Scotland - so much history! Had trouble deciding what to get on the menu - lots of things I wanted to try, very reasonably priced. Worth the visit!

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
