We called into this place meeting friends for the day. The service and quality was great but value of their 3 course lunch @ £6.45 was unbelievable.

Popped in for lunch, food was lovely and the staff very friendly. The lunch time menu was an absolute bargain and we will definitely be back again soon.

Decided to give la lanterna a try last sunday, what a great idea. Staff were charming and attentive. Food was excellent; brushetta, black pudding starter, beef stroganoff(not italian i know but delicious)and chicken main course with a diane sauce. Very reasonably priced wine also. Will be back.

Good value, good service, good location. We had pasta and Calzone which both very nice indeed. Friendly staff and good central location for lunchtime in City Centre Edinburgh

Stumbled across this restaurant by chance, couldn't have asked for better £6.75 for a 3 course lunch, delicious. Would highly recommend to anyone

This restaurant was around the corner from our hotel. We had such a wonderful experience that we went back a couple nights later. The staff couldn't have been more attentive-we had to wait 15/20 min. to place our food order the second night, so the manager brought us out a pizza-on the house!

The Lanterna did not get off to a good start. Several items were off the menu including the veal my wife had set her heart on. The waiter was Spanish, the food was moderately good as was the service and the cost. maybe we should have tried the Grand Cru upstairs. Would not recommend.

Three adults and two kids ordered from what looked like a good value menu. However, the pasta dishes were over-cooked with cloying sauces and my wife's chicken marsala (they didn't have any veal apparently) was inedible: the chicken had clearly been cooked a long time earlier and was very tough. The manager was good enough to replace it with a... More

Totally unpretentious and slightly dated Italian in a basement on Hanover Street. Friendly staff, service a little slow if I'm being picky. But the atmosphere was fun, and the food was excellent quality and quantity for the money. More a 4 than 5 but enjoyed our visit and would go again.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
