Lunch before the Rugby

We had lunch here before the Rugby on Saturday, and we had a delicious lunch. The place has a fantastic atmosphere, (bit of Rugby helped!) but the food was fantastically French, loads of French bread, Steak and frites, and brilliantly reasonable set menus. Would definitely return.

A long term favourite visited on every Calcutta Cup weekend. Friday night visit and very popular with much enjoyment being had by all. Reminds me of a London bistro in the late 60s but with better food!Steak Frites just as it should be! Very, very good value for money. See you in 2 years!

Been a couple of times and have always enjoyed myself. The small space and the wooden benches create such a authentic French atmosphere. The food is great and so is the house wine. Would definite recommend!

Awesome value lunches to be had here. 2 course £7.95, 3 course £9.95. Very good mussels (Moules frites) and speedy service even though the place was packed.

Not the French experience which we were expecting. Music so loud that you cannot have a conversation without shouting. Tables squashed together and waitresses uninterested. Most disappointing. Food was average too. Smoked salmon and mussels good but macaronie cheese tasteless. Been there....won't do it again!!

Group of 4 having dinner - food was good, service barely adequate - two girls were trying hard - but the background noise spoiled the evening. The piped music was way too loud, everyone was having to shout. In summary, 4 stars for food, 3 for service, 1 for ambience - I'll give it 2 overall.

Another good experience here and enjoyed the food and the wine. Service could be better on this occasion, staff need to have more interest in the clients. It was very busy but this is no excuse these days. Really enjoyed the steaks, very well cooked and extremely good value. Looking forward to returning for some fun with friends - great... More

Dropped in at Chez Jules after NOT booking anything whilst on a wander around the Edinburgh's Xmas festivities. The place was jumping and it didn't look promising...but they came up trumps and we got a table for 4 just next to the kitchen. We sat down and instantly we had bread, salad and a jug of water, great! It slowed... More

We had the special: surf and turf... Wow! £21 for ribeye steak and half lobster. Lovely little place for couples. Not sure about the paintings on the wall.

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
