Good French classics, and some twists - I had escargots & frogs legs to start & surf'n'turf for main. My son had baked goats cheese and then scallops with potatoes cooked in duck fat. Decent affordable wine. Buzzy feel. I would go back.

We arrived hoping to enjoy a nice meal with friends and we left without even ordering. We tried to move one of the chairs and the owner came to say «Do I go to your living room to move your furniture?» Extremely rude. Really didn't feel like staying after that. We then went to Henderson's and had a great lunch!... More

Rectification :You did not have to leave, you chose to! Life is full of little lies that I wish to rectify. You did not just try to move a chair, you replaced one of my beloved bench with a chair by pushing the bench in the middle of the alleyway and disturbing one of our sitting customers. I was surprised... More

Our group of 4 adults and 3 young children popped in here randomly on a day trip to Edinburgh. Within a few minutes we were ordering and eating excellent value French food in a warm and cosy atmosphere. This is a brilliant, friendly restaurant with 2 courses for £8 and 3 for £10. There can be no better value for... More

Wonderful, as always. We visit this basement French restaurant each time we visit Edinburgh. Lunchtime 3 course meal for £9.99 is superb value. Pay a little extra and have Le General for desert!! It's atmospheric and ideal for couples, friends or families.

Had dinner here on a Saturday evening and it did not disappoint! Although it was very busy the service was quick and efficient. The food was of excellent quality and very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit.

I noticed that this restaurant had appeared in Hanover Street and I though to give it a go. After fighting my way past crowded tables I was attended practically instantly by friendly staff who brought me a jug of water and a basket of baguette slices with butter and a small dish of olives, etc. The Coq au Vin was... My daughter and i visited here on friday night as part of a weekend away for her 8th birthday. The food was beautifully cooked (highly reccommend the surf and turf!). Staff were wonderfully friendly and thoughtful, lovely ambiance too! X

My earliest Edinburgh dining memory is the 1960s Perigord buffet, particularly the desserts! (in the George Hotel?) Five shillings it cost my parents at the time, that's 25p in decimal currency! Well, at under £10, it is Chez Jules turn to pull a proverbial rabbit out of the hat for a three course lunch, finding us a table for three... More

My first experience on a busy Saturday lunch time. We had not booked and was very busy but got a table no problem.Tables are too close together but obviously to get in as many people as possible. Much larger inside than it looks from the outside but with a very low ceiling makes it noisy when busy. The tables already... More

Chez Jules is tucked away in a basement on Hanover Street and is clearly very popular. We visited on a busy Monday lunchtime and tried the set lunch menu which is a steal at £7.90 for two course or £9.90 for three. The restaurant is cosy with check tablecloths and candles. Our meal was very good - complimentary bread, olives,... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
