We booked a table well in advance and were given a tiny table, fortunately I was able to squeeze into my seat! Be warned, if you are a little podgy you might not fit!! We had the Christmas lunch and were quite enjoying ourselves when we got asked to move to another table to have our pudding! That is cheeky... More

Party of eight. Turned up and one of our party nearly burned them self on a gas heater at the main door. (These heaters are banned under fire regs). Meal took over an hour to be served. Two people didn't receive there meals along with the others. One five minutes later one another twenty minutes (it was only gnocchi?) Portions... More

Party of eight. Turned up on time, table ready. Sat down, shared our complimentary bread baskets, big bowl of salad, charcuterie and olives followed by Lamb shank, Roast chicken, steak a cheval, beef Brochette, Toulouse sausage cassoulet, coq au vin, shoestring fries, gratin Dauphinois, roasted vegetables, green beans and onion rings...I guess at around £20 per head including 4 bottles... This was a recommendation from and Edinburgh friend and what a pleasant surprise it was! Granted the tables are very close together so prepare to get cosy with your neighbours but the staff are great, the food is yummy and good value, and there's plenty of atmosphere. This is not one for a quiet dinner but if you're up for... More

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Tables packed closely together - a wee bit too close for my liking. However, can't argue with the service, tasty French bistro food and the very reasonable price (although the beer is a bit steep). I would go back.

Warm welcome and friendly service provided us with a high-chair, and a sample of salami, olives and bread. Bottle of water then prepared us for some beefy French onion soup with a cheese crouton. Impressive mains followed as peppercorn and red wine sauces complemented the tender chicken and robust steak dishes. What's not to like about crème caramel or chocolate... More

After wandering round a few of Edinburgh's streets in the afternoon looking for somewhere to eat that evening we spotted this little place down some steps. The offer of tasting the new season's Beaujolais Nouveau was enticing and when we arrived later and found the place to be buzzing. The accordion player added to the ambience and we tasted 3... More

We found Chez Jules by accident - it seemed buzzy so we gave it a try, It's not a big place so it gets quite packed and noisy, and as a middle aged couple we were probably the oldest there. But it was filled with people who were serious about their food. And we could see why...... the food was... More

So pleased I chose Chez Jules for our wedding anniversary dinner. It's noisy and they fit a lot of tables into the space but this is what gives the place such a lively atmosphere. It really feels like people are having a good time and we did too. My French black pudding and apple starter was delicious as was the... More

This place is always busy and never had a bad meal. I got steak and chips and chocolate mousse and my sister got the chicken for main course and mousse this was on the lunch time deal as it's very reasonable. Staff are great even knows it's really busy they are quick in attending to you. Been a few times... More

Staying in New Town

Neighborhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
