Hotel Du Vin is one of my favorite Edinburgh restaurants and I have been coming here for years. And this time too they didn't let me down. I have visited HDV on 14th of January to celebrate my guest birthday. We had a Chateaubriand for two, accompanied by a bottle of Beaujolais and followed by Cheeseborad and CHOCOLATE BOMB, .... More

We were given a wine tasting experience at Hotel Du Vin Edinburgh as a gift. We went along on Friday and our sommelier Julien was very good. Friendly, knowledgeable and interested. We tasted 2 champagnes; 2 white wines and 2 red wines - all very pleasant. Julien explained all about the wines and even the cost of each bottle -... More

The food here is good but the service is abysmal. We had the maitre d' ask if we wanted champagne, we said yes, then she tried to bring us gin. We asked to move because of noise but were told they were booked out. But we later saw quieter tables never used. The sommelier spoke little English and was not... More

I was really looking forward to go to this place for the new years dinner and I have to say that after that I was not happy at all. Even though the atmosphere, the staff and location were great the food was really disappointing compared to what we paid. They took the payment in advance which is fair enough but... More

We stayed at the hotel for a special night away and it was excellent. Room and staff perfect. Our dinner at the bistro however was a waste of time and money. While we had walked up Arthur's Seat and were quite hungry, we had to rack up 130 pound bill just to feel sort of full. Bread, olives, 2 entrees,... More

From the street the hotel looks nothing special however as you enter the courtyard you begin to suspect something more. A wonderful welcome on arrival and you see the gorgeous decor and furnishings. Cannot praise enough the staff, very attentive, discrete, everything you want. Lovely furnishings, whiskey room, outside courtyard and bedrooms.

Opted for Sunday Le Brunch..... couldn't fault service or extensive wine list.....but food disappointing .... the centrepiece of the Sunday lunch is billed as a lavish French market table with exciting choices .....this was very much lacking in choice, nor lavish or very plentiful. Soup course average.... mains of the chicken and beef small portions I assume as believe you... More

Booked a table for my husband's Birthday with friends. The food fantastic as was the wine and the staff attentive. All seemed to be going well until my friend who had never been to the Bistro before went to the Ladies. She passed a remark about the staff of if. So I decided to go and see for myself and... More

I ordered a porterhouse (500gr) and it was tasty and tender. The service was correct as it is a select place but i would preffer a more closer service. If you go, you should taste the italian olives.

Visited on a Saturday afternoon with my family with an itison voucher and we were all very pleasantly surprised! The menu was seasonal and had some christmasy dishes. The food was really delicious! I didn't expect massive portions but the portions were all very reasonably sized and bread and veg were also served. The service could not be faulted. Water... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
