Our first visit and we immediatley booked to go back with the family next weekend. Great food and service, with a warm and lovely atmosphere. Just what we were looking for on a Saturady lunchtime.

We were given a gift certificate for this place, so we didn't pay for the meal. In a bizarre coincidence, we've been given another certificate for Hotel Du Vin by another friend. The room for Sunday lunch is pleasant and interestingly decorated with vintage French items and signage on the shelves and walls. The star of the room is probably... More

Tasty lunch at this establishment. They do a fixed price lunch (£16.95 for 2 courses / £19.95 for 3 courses). Drink prices are what you'd expect for a 4 star hotel. Very attentive and friendly service in nice surroundings.

The service from the sommelier was astounding. Very very nice touch. Lovely food and delicious wine (if a tad overpriced). The waitress did seem a little disinterested and obviously did not want to be there, perhaps she was having a bad day. The sommelier and quality of food soon made up for this though.

The central location and the character of this old building are pluses. We enjoyed a glass of wine in the courtyard (large patio heaters if needed!) and when the waitress found out we were dining she brought out the menus for us to look at. We ate in the Bistro which is done out in a style sympathetic to the... More

A very disappointing visit to the Hotel du Vin Bistro. The food was mediocre nothing special. This is not a cheap restaurant and I would have expected a much higher standard. The service was extremely slow and we even had to chase up our bill at the end. A service charge is automatically added to the bill. I think Hotel... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
