The building and attractively lit courtyard entrance augured well. The restaurant wasn't especially busy yet as we were dining early. It is decorated in what we assume to be a traditional French bistro style with a mix of open stonework, thick aged effect plaster and plenty of bottle themed decoration. Overall quite pleasant. Service was efficient if rather severe and... More

We always try to book into Hotel du Vin when visiting Edinburgh. It's an ideally located for the Fringe Festival venues and also caters for dogs. The restaurant offers an interesting menu - always changing and evolving. Fine selection of wines also.

Booked through 5pm.com. got 3 course lunch with champagne and coffee for two all for under 30 pounds! I had mackerel to start which kept coming back on me but maybe that's just me! Then had chicken burger with chips which was excellent. My partner had sea bass which was a little too small. Deserts were very good. Interior of... More

Fine dining restaurant in nice surroundings with a prominence on wines and whiskies. Nice courtyard to sit outside which we did before the meal. Service was excellent except from one mishap when we ordered a bottle of wine based on the waitresses advice but she failed to let us know the price which was significantly more than we would have... A large group of us visited Hotel du Vin in Edinburgh for dinner the night before a wedding. We were in the groom's party. He and his family were staying there. We were required to pre order our food, 2 weeks in advance. I have no problem with this, but I would expect that the menu would have been chosen... More

We had booked for 11 of us to have dinner during the festival. The staff were really helpful, the table/room was great for our meal and the food was really enjoyable. It is not cheap but most of the food was good - not brilliant. However we had a good evening at the restaurant in Hotel du Vin.

No only disappointed but angry after dinner experience. We decided to give the bistro a go as we were guests of the hotel. Bad choice !! Steak filets were way overdone despite ordering rare.... One guest ordered porterhouse cut Steak brought to table was not a porterhouse!! Waiter insisted it was. Guest decided not to make an issue. But did... More

Well located hotel. Staff very welcoming and attentive. Lunch was over four courses. The second course being a French Market Table laden with Seafood, Charcuterie, Pates, Rillettes, Salads, vegetables and freshly baked Artisan Bread. All courses very tasty and well presented.. Extensive Wine List.

We got married at Hotel du Vin in Poole, so whilst visiting Edinburgh for the Fringe we decided to give the Edinburgh restaurant a try and it certainly didn't disappoint. I've seen some bad reviews for service, but we went a little later and it was fairly quiet, so we thought the service was good. We had the Chateaubriand and... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
