We had booked for 11 of us to have dinner during the festival. The staff were really helpful, the table/room was great for our meal and the food was really enjoyable. It is not cheap but most of the food was good - not brilliant. However we had a good evening at the restaurant in Hotel du Vin.

No only disappointed but angry after dinner experience. We decided to give the bistro a go as we were guests of the hotel. Bad choice !! Steak filets were way overdone despite ordering rare.... One guest ordered porterhouse cut Steak brought to table was not a porterhouse!! Waiter insisted it was. Guest decided not to make an issue. But did... More

Well located hotel. Staff very welcoming and attentive. Lunch was over four courses. The second course being a French Market Table laden with Seafood, Charcuterie, Pates, Rillettes, Salads, vegetables and freshly baked Artisan Bread. All courses very tasty and well presented.. Extensive Wine List.

We got married at Hotel du Vin in Poole, so whilst visiting Edinburgh for the Fringe we decided to give the Edinburgh restaurant a try and it certainly didn't disappoint. I've seen some bad reviews for service, but we went a little later and it was fairly quiet, so we thought the service was good. We had the Chateaubriand and... More

A family group of 7 of us stopped for refreshments in the courtyard during the Edinburgh festival. It was not busy. We were acknowledged by a surly waiter. We then waited for 15 minutes for some service , nobody came so we left - don't waste your time with this place, appalling customer service.

Hotel was lovely. My partner had said in the booking that it was my birthday and they put a note to say happy birthday and put a slate of beautiful chocolates in the room. We paid for a standard room but got a superior which was lovely. The bed was so comfy and the location was excellent, right in the... More

My partner and I visited just after midday on Sunday 24 August. Despite Edinburgh still being in the midst of the Festival, there was plenty of outdoor seating so it seemed like a nice idea to pop in for a drink and a light bite to eat. We were wrong. We were told by the receptionist to seat ourselves, which... More

We popped into the bar of the Hotel du Vin for drinks before the Tattoo. Looking for somewhere that we could sit for a short time between a gig of Fringe and the climb up to the castle. Four drinks (2 Hendricks, a vodka and a rum) came to just over £25, which was I thought expensive. But I do... More

You can always rely on Hotel du Vin to treat you nicely, be well-presented and serve near-perfect food. Not to mention their passion for wine pairing! Had a lovely steak which was prepared simply and really delicious. I was just a little disappointed that once again my call for rare was ignored, but not terribly so. It might feel like... More

I have to be honest: it was during the Edinburgh Festival, but the table was booked for 6.15 and our starters didn't arrive until 7.10. It was even a struggle to get our first drinks. Despite that, we enjoyed our meal and would definitely go back - at a quieter time of year.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
