A most enjoyable evening. Started with foie gras crème brulee which was sublime. An enormous helping. Felt rather bilious later but that was my entirely my fault and greed having wolfed down the foie gras far too quickly. Then roast pheasant which was the perfect vehicle for some of the most delicious gravy I have ever tasted. Couldn't manage a... More

This restaurant has a pleasant ambience and very good food. We both started with mussels with Roquefort and bacon which we both really enjoyed. I then had cod with ham which was excellent. My husband had a steak which unfortunately had a Roquefort sauce. His mistake but too much Roquefort in one meal. The food is Scottish produce cooked in... More

Hubby and I were invited to lunch by a friend. We hadn't been before and were hugely impressed! Really interesting menu, with several dishes on each course appealing, not always the case in restaurants. Hubby had the Moules and smoked haddock Mariniere, I could smell the garlic when it arrived, he loved it. I had the fish rillettes, a creamy... More

The first time at this restaurant and certainly not the last from start to finish the food and service was excellent. The atmosphere was lovely and the staff made all of us feel welcome, it was a family members birthday and they certainly made her and all of us first class attention. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone

Cozy restaurant with super friendly staff and excellent food. This is a proper French restaurant. You can feel that the staff and the kitchen all know what they're doing and that they have a passion for food. It's always a pleasure to dine and deal with experts. Highly recommended

We've been in for lunch as the £12.95 for 2 courses could not be avoided. What we found out was that the most interesting dishes have a supplement and if you want have vegetables in your plate you have to order some as the mains comes only with potatoes. Overall a £48 lunch for 2 with soft drinks. Not sure... More

Hello and thank you for your review. Our set lunch menu, priced at £12.90 is made of 6 starters and six main courses to choose from, this include bread and butter . Only one starter and a main has a supplement, not like what is mentioned in your review. This supplement apply to a more expensive dish to make. A... More

Authentic French Cuisine with a Scottish touch, the service was impeccable. Their wine list is great and reasonably priced too. I had the 2 course lunch for £12.90, including their "Mussels in a Mustard sauce" which were divine!!!! Do not miss it!

Lovely ambiance, with attentive service and very good coute de boeuf with decent wine. We very much enjoyed our meal here. Prices reasonable £15-30 for a main. Would happily return!

Edinburgh may be teeming with French restaurants but very few are as authentic as LEscargot Bleu. Gaining dedicated fans from the moment its doors opened, this place owes less to what a French restaurant should be than to what a French restaurant is as any visitor to the little bistros of Parisian back streets and off-the-beaten-track towns will tell you. The haphazardly put together surroundings, dotted with Edith Piaf posters and furnished with checked clothed tables, only hints at what the menu has to offer. So true to real French eating, the menu is very nearly unbelievable with snails cooked in piquant garlic, steaks smothered in cheese-heavy sauces and anything else youd care to imagine being sent out of any good kitchen in Perpignan, Poitiers or Pontivy served without a hint of irony.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
