Although the restaurant is comfortable my friend and I had a very uncomfortable evening due to the manager (and owner?) being abusive to his staff. He seemed to think we should be impressed by his ability to insult and undermine however it simply exposed his own ignorance and lack of manners. Think Basil Faulty and Manuel, without the humour. Not... More

We wanted to try Scottish food and so I found this neighbourhood Scottish restaurant. We came in and found our way down stairs to a really nice cosy room, tables nicely set and great atmosphere. It felt really homely. We was treated well by the staff and well looked after. The food was amazing. The portions were big and the... More

We went for Christmas Dinner and we weren't disappointed! The service was attentive but not intrusive. The menu selection was excellent which did make choosing difficult but there was certainly something for everyone. We were all very happy with the quality and will be making a return visit.

When we arrived at the restaurant there was a very unpleasant odour. Staff was OK upon our arrival but not that friendly. The decorations are tradtional (a bit old fashioned) but we didn't mind. We were very disappointed by the food. It took a long time before we got our food and the service was poor. The food itself was... More

Cozy little neighborhood gem. Hotel concierge pointed us in the right direction for a typical scottish repast--the lamb is superb!

Couldn't get booked into a good restaurant in Edinburgh arriving on a Christmas Eve however the consiage of the George pointed us to the Stac Polly. Five minute walk into a great place. Rare lamb and great ambiance worked a treat

Stac Polly is an excellent neighborhood restaurant featuring Scottish cuisine and farm-to-table foods. The lamb is not to be missed.

Great little restaurant in the centre of town (a couple of minutes walk from Princes St) with fantastic Scottish cuisine. Nothing too fancy but fantastic selection of dishes with great ingredients. Combined with a good wine list and excellent service makes this a great place to visit.

Really interesting restaurant with a good menu. Staff were fab and the food came at the right pace. Interesting vegetarian option, not the usual risotto! Lots of fish and seafood as well as meat. Good value for the quality of cuisine

On the day of my visit, I was a bit late for my reservation, but fortunately, I was the only one having lunch at the time. The manager was very accommodating, and I enjoyed the rustic ambience while waiting for the food. I had the three course meal, and everything was delicious, but the haggis in filo pastry starter was... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighborhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
