I've lived within a 5 minute walk of this restaurant for the last 9 years, but until recently I didn't know it was there! It looks so unassuming from the outside, and is located on a street that hardly looks like the kind of place you'd find a high quality innovative restaurant! Appearences are deceptive however, this place is a... More

This restaurant never fails to surprise and delight me. Changing the menu every month is such a great idea, and Wayne and Co come up with really delicious dishes. Vegetarians, on the whole, are poorly served in most other restaurants, paying silly prices for very uninspiring food, so this is an absolute gem of a place to go to -... More

We've been eating at the Canteen since it opened. It has been consistently good in terms of variety of menu, quality of food and value for money. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable and the, generally 80s, music adds a touch of nostalgia. We have visited in large and small groups of vegans, vegetarians and omnivores who have all had... When we went there was a special offer on; 3 courses for £16 which was well worth it. There was one meat dish which my partner (a committed carnivore) ordered but it didn't seem as nice as my vegetarian dish. If memory serves me they only open certain hours on certain days so booking is advisable. Wasn't as pretentious as... More

The food was absolutely excellent, the atmosphere intimate and the service good without being overbearing. We ate well past the point of being full and didn't regret it for one second. I couldn't pick a bad thing to say about a single bite. Well worth a visit, and a return visit. I certainly will.

We can't praise this restaurant highly enough (well we don't want you all booking at once, do we?!) We discovered this gem through Trip Advisor on a recent visit to Cardiff. What a find - a treat for vegetarian spouse (one meat dish, for carnivores) with imaginative food obviously influenced by the chef/patron's globe-trotting, and the ready availability of just... We found this restaurant via Tripadvisor and what a find it was. The food was different to what we are used to, the range of flavours amazing! We couldn't fit in pudding as the other two courses were huge. The service was excellent, we weren't rushed which resulted in a truly relaxing evening.

The Canteen is very different to every other restaurant I've been to, certainly in Cardiff. Its menu is unusual, there were many ingredients in the vegetarian dishes that I had literally never heard of! The food was tasty and appealing and the chef came around to the tables to chat afterwards which was a lovely touch. The venue is odd,... More

Four of us went to the Canteen on Clifton Street after we found it on Tripadvisor and had a look at their website. The idea behind the restaurant seemed very interesting, the menus looked different and exciting and the owner seemed enthusiastic and sincere. To top it off it was very reasonably priced (£16.00 for 3 courses). Too good to... More

Description
Canteen on Clifton Street in Cardiff is a fun and lively restaurant with fresh and inspiring fare. The down-to-earth dining room, with tiled floors and wood-panelled walls, is well-known for its vegetarian-based menu, and is the perfect place for dinners and parties with friends who are vegans, vegetarians and/or omnivores. The kitchen at Canteen on Clifton Street takes inspiration from Mexican and Mediterranean traditions, and the menu changes every fortnight. Favourite dishes include the Arabian spiced lamb with cardamom, pistachio and apricot rice; curried parsnip and mango soup; Lebanese spinach parcels with carrot and beetroot salad; and their famous vegan sticky toffee pudding. The chefs at Canteen are also happy to create bespoke meals.
