About
Winners of the 2017 Best Pub Award in Coventry and Warwickshire. Thatched, low beamed and flag stone floor tavern. Dates from 1470 and has many original features. Log fires., Lovely leaded windows and a cosy atmosphere. Traditional English food made from locally sourced produce is created in the Thatch kitchen by our team of experienced chef’s . Excellent well trained front of house staff, that I’m very proud of, are managed by the lovely experienced general manager Genevieve. We’ve owned the Thatch for 15 years and we like you to experience a ‘home from home’ relaxed atmosphere and Mike and I work hard to maintain that. We are dog friendly and keep treats behind the bar but we can also serve up a nice little snack for them too. On visiting our pub I hope you love it as much as we do.

I think we’ve found our new favourite for Sunday lunch when visiting Stratford upon Avon. This quaint old pub is steeped in history and well worth a visit just for that reason.
We’ve had drinks in the Old Thatch prior to this visit but never eaten here, and swayed by what we’d seen on previous visits we decided to try a Sunday lunch.
It was absolutely delicious.
A generous portion of meat with a piping hot array of vegetables and meaty gravy. We were swiftly served and seated quickly, and our food was presented soon after. Not rushed, just right.
May I also say the two young girls who run service work so incredibly hard and are always so pleasant and accommodating. It’s such a constantly busy pub, yet they have service off to a fine art.
Can’t wait to return!

Last here in 2019.
Nothing changed, still good beer, reasonable wine and good food.
Enjoyed the Cottage Pie. The Hunter Chicken had a bit much hickory but they did make it with Veges rather than salad and chips - very accommodating and much appreciated.
Service with a smile and they really do care (as shown with the veges). Thanks a lot.

6 of us went for lunch (including 2 American guests). Service and food were very good. I specifically asked for the chips to be really hot and crispy and that was how they arrived. One of our American friends said they were the best chips she'd had in a very long time. Well done Old Thatch and thank you.

Finding it difficult to see where the great reviews come from .
My husband and myself went in for an evening meal on a Monday evening.
We were met at the bar by a “young lad” who pointed to a free table brought our drinks then we sat waiting for our order to be taken for 15 minutes.
The order was taken by the blonde lady who was short, abrupt and frosty in her manner .
There weee only a handful of us in there and the blonde lady, maybe land lady ,walked past numerous times but didn’t acknowledge us.
When our food did arrive it was very bland .
My husband had steak and pie,a small slice, frozen chips and VERY plain boiled vegetables with I suspect ‘bisto’gravy.
I had chicken Caesar salad ,it was fine but Nothing more .
I asked if I may have extra Parmesan and the young lad just dumped it in front of me on a plate and said nothing.
The pub is very much lacking in customer service. No body came over and asked if everything was ok,or if they could get us anything else despite them walking past our table multiple times .
We asked for the bill and it was brought over to our table .Nobody explained ,as they didn’t when we arrived there about the ordering procedure, whether we were to pay at the bar or if someone would come to take payment at our table. We got fed up trying to get the lady’s attention so left our money on the table(as is done in many establishments )when paying cash.
As we were leaving the barman called to us ‘you havnt paid!!’how very unprofessional, rude and unfriendly .we explained to him we had .
Nobody said goodbye or asked if everything had been ok.
There are some fabulous eateries in stratford with delicious food and lovely service .
The thatched Tavern is definately not one of them.

The first time we visited this pub we thoroughly enjoyed our time however after returning to the pub 2 months later we were really disappointed to have experienced the complete opposite. There was a young lad who seemed to have been pretty much on his own on a relatively busy Friday night covering bar service, restaurant and supporting the chef in the kitchen. There were 2 women who appeared to be staff but the whole time we were there they were just stood around talking and constantly walking back and forth from the kitchen to the bar but didn't appear to be doing anything, not once did they pick up even a glass. It made us feel very uneased while eating our dinner watching these 2 ladies pacing back and forth for over an hour. We also noticed their chef wasn't in uniform and instead was wearing a hoodie!

Pre-booked for 6.30pm and arrived at 6.20. Restaurant was full and just one table for two free, having no chairs, but just two low-level stools / buffets.
Bought drinks at the bar and ordered food at the table - first choice each were unavailable. Second choices arrived after approx 20 mins and were excellent, if somewhat uncomfortable using stools / buffets.
Atmosphere was loud and pub-like and decor was old and of mixed-theme. A bit “spit n sawdust” standards.
Tables were not cleaned or sanitised if people left.
Overall OK as an experience in a very old pub, but very much aimed at passing trade as I certainly wouldn’t go for a repeat visit.

Tip: you place your order at the bar for food and drinks and you pay at the bar. Nowhere and no one tells you this as you're shown to your table. A sign would be helpful to the staff and the customers.
Keep your expectations low and you won't be disappointed. Basic pub food.
Very busy. Two serving staff working very hard.
Food was hot and served together and given how busy it was we weren't waiting very long.

Ordered steak and ale pie and looked lovely when I got it but meat was tough and grissly. Didn't eat it at all, informed staff who were really nice , got a drink knocked of the bill. I would rather have had a good pie to start with. The meat cut must have been really cheap, they need to get good quality meat. Especially in this day and age when everyone is clambering for custom.

Lovely old pub on a slightly quieter corner of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a Fullers, but has a different menu to the usual Fullers and well worth sampling. Food prices very good and the food itself is really lovely and home made. I had the cottage pie, which was really good. Barman Leon was great - he was doing everything, serving at the bar, answering the phone, table service to diners, setting tables and serving food and still nothing seemed too much trouble. I do hope he is valued! Will definitely return when back in Stratford.

We visited the pub for dinner with friends, we were sat at the back near the toilet door and one of our seats was virtually touching the seat behind, it all felt very cramped.
The waitress was running around serving drinks at the bar and waiting on tables, this left a distinct lack of customer service, which the waitress can not be held responsible for.
The pub was freezing cold, the open fire wasn’t lit and the radiators were cold.
We were warned that several items on the menu were unavailable so the choice of food was limited.
Our starters were nice, we all enjoyed them.
The thatched burger bun was rock hard, the chips were cold, hunters chicken was swimming in sweet BBQ sauce and the gravy for the pie was lumpy.
We were never asked how the food was and the waitress was so busy we barely saw her.
It was a disappointing visit, the pub itself is quaint inside and looks beautiful outside, we feel it should have more to offer.
Our friends travelled over to visit so we didn’t make a fuss as we didn’t want to embarrass them, we wouldn’t return.

Massive thank you to all at the old thatch tavern. I booked a table for 6 of us for my partners bday, mainly due to location and reading up on previous reviews that highly recommended them but this was our first visit. They were so helpful with the booking and even brought out the birthday cake after the meal. The food was lovely and everyone thoroughly enjoyed meals and the pleasant atmosphere. I would highly recommend to anyone.

On a tour of the Cotswolds our guide mentioned places to visit when in Stratford-upon- Avon. He said that the Old Thatch Tavern was worth checking out especially because of its rumoured hauntings. Supposedly Table 10 has been cited as a place a poltergeist will sometimes fling glasses…. A tall tall tale to entice tourists to visit? Maybe. When we visited all we saw were contented people enjoying their meals and pints. Your experience may differ!

What can I say, this has to be the best pub in town for its food. We went in for food around 4pm on Thursday 7th july. Food was beautifully presented. The chap who cooked and served our food was very well mannered. Hunter chicken and cottage pie was cooked to perfection. Bar lady was also very attentive and polite. A great location for anyone wanting to dine and drink in Stratford. Would definitely recommend.

The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious, home-cooked food. Perfect place if you’re looking to go for pub food - we had Pie of the Day and Fish and Chips. We were only in Stratford upon Avon for one night but would definitely go there again if we ever go back! Would recommend to anyone out for dinner in Stratford upon Avon
