The white house is a great pub in a lovely location. however the food offering is lacking. we went for a friends birthday at the weekend. the location was lively but not too crowded. staff were very nice, but some service was confused with different staff taking our orders and telling us different things. the food lets the white house down. the portions are mean for the price. there was only one vegan option which came with a warning the buns may contain dairy. and no vegan option for dessert. this seems very behind the times for 2024 when most places offer at least a couple of vegan dishes or meals that can be adapted for vegans. this should be noted if any groups have a vegan friend or family member. i will be back for a drink, but i will eat before i return.

The staff are friendly and helpful, and the pub is generally nice to visit in terms of ambience. But I won't be going again, as it's just too pricey. The vegan burger was expensive at nearly £17, was not actually that nice and came with the tiniest tin of chips I've ever seen. Add to that two beers at £7.50 a pint and it was a costly evening. I'll be going to Whetherspoons next time.

The pub is in a lovely location by the water. We visited with friends and had a nice table in the conservatory area. The food wait was a little bit slow but and we were getting hungry but some of the group had ordered starters which made the wait seem longer.
I ordered the plant based burger which was a bit disappointing for the price. The burger and chips were tasty but it just looked very small on the plate like a child's portion. It would have benefited from some salad and onion rings.
I asked for barbecue sauce but there wasn't any so I settled for brown sauce which didn't arrive.
I'd visit again for drinks but I think there needs to be more enticing vegan options on the menu.

Ordered two beef roasts. Beef not edible, my mum ate none as she couldn’t even slice it. I persevered but didn’t enjoy. Potatoes I expect to be crispy but they weren’t at all. The only decent thing was the Yorkshire pudding which took up half the plate.
Basically £50 for two roasts that neither of us enjoyed.
No discount after I told waiter, as he had said he’d come to ask how things were. I had politely said ok when he came to ask how things were, as I always do when I don’t really think much of the food because I want to get out as soon as possible. My mum is deaf and I should have asked her too when the waiter asked as I didn’t realise she wasn’t eating any of her beef.
Will not eat here again. They don’t seem to care if you enjoy the food or not. They must rely simply on the fact they are in a prime spot.

I booked a table for 2 for a 2pm Sunday lunch following a shopping trip to Guildford. I have researched the best places for a Sunday lunch in Guildford before booing and the White House came up as one option.
We had a table in the conservatory, overlooking the river. My wife ordered the Roast Chicken lunch and I had the Roast Beef, along with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.
The lunch was exceptional, one of our best ever. The roast potatoes were herby (Thyme?) and crisp, the Cauliflower cheese was delicious and VERY cheesy, and the accompanying buttered mixed green veg was also very good. My beef was tender and tasty but the star was my wife's Chicken, which was perfectly cooked and not at all dry and SO tasty, like the chickens we used to eat in the 1960s!
Service was polite and rapid and all together, we really enjoyed the meal and will return to Guildford just to enjoy a repeat experience before Xmas.
Compliments to the chef and serving staff!

Met with friends for drinks here. Although we were here a while, there was no pressure to buy food, though some of us did.
The menu is “gastro pub” level pricing, but it’s perfectly decent food and there’s a good non alcoholic beer selection. A short distance from the town centre too, so easy to get to if you’ve been to the shops.

Came in last Friday for dinner with two friends and decided to order the steak to treat myself, which I very rarely do when out for dinner as its normally the more expensive option. I was really disappointed, I asked for the steak to be rare and it came out medium/medium rare. Not only was it not cooked to how I asked, the steak was pretty much all fat, so I told one of the staff members how I wasn’t happy (hate doing this as I also work in hospitality) but I had also paid £25.50 for it, there was no apology. The fish came out and was fine, however no one offered to reimburse me the £10 that I had spent on the steak.

I booked the River Lounge function room for my Mum's 70th birthday party. I was looking for a well ventilated space that could accommodate up to 30 people, with a decent buffet and drinks reception.
The White House exceeded my expectations in every way. The function room, that we were able to decorate however we wanted, was bright and airy with a beautiful view of the river. Our server Grace was attentive and friendly, making sure that every guest felt welcome. The food in particular was a great success, with a huge range of hot and cold buffet options that had every guest going back for seconds. My Mum had a great birthday and there were so many compliments about the venue and food!
Huge thanks to the manager, Mabs, who went out of his way to make sure the party was a success. The Fullers booking system was rather impersonal, so I popped in to the pub a couple of times to see the function room and ask some questions. On both occasions, Mabs took the time to sit with me and chat about the party plans.
When I was informed via email that supply chain issues would affect the buffet menu, Mabs listened to my queries and concerns, took a genuine interest and came up with alternative options. He couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating.
I would definitely use the White House again for another function, and will definitely be going back for dinner and drinks soon. 100% would recommend!

Our host was cold and offered no conversation while booking us in on track and trace after barely acknowledging us asking if they had a table. We waited a while to be greeted and offered drinks, and the server didn't know which flavours of my requested drink they had so I just stated my preference but said either will do - he then came back after taking our order to tell me they didn't have either, as well as not having the fish and chips my boyfriend ordered. So we all had the chicken burger, they took at least half an hour to arrive and when they did they had been fried until practically black, and the chips were average. The 'bacon jam' on the side was pretty tasty as was the sriracha mayo but neither saved the dry chicken no matter how much I slathered on the plain bun, as well as one sad slice of tomato, a slither of onion and a single lettuce leaf to top it off. The server was young and poorly trained, he didn't offer us the specials that we later saw on a tiny board behind another table of guests (which we would have ordered had we known about them - as the starter selection consisted of 3 unappetising plates). We didn't even ask to see desserts because our appetites had died. I also saw a staff member drinking what appeared to be beer (but could have been apple juice really) behind the bar, rather than in a side room, who then proceeded to wipe his beard thoroughly in full view of customers which wasn't the most appetising thing to watch... The bill was totally extortionate for such a simple meal - had it not been for the eat out to help out scheme, we'd have asked for money off.
Overall: Poor food, slow service, undertrained staff, limited menu and prices that did not match the quality or quantity.

hello,
thank you for your review, your comments regarding the food will be forwarded to our chefs. we did ask how your food was and nothing was brought to our attention, we cleared 2 empty plates with what we would assume would mean you were very satisfied with our dishes. We ask all of our guests to inform us as soon as possible if our food is not up to their stands so we can rectify it and satisfy your tastebuds, we cant fix an issue if we dont know if there is a problem. We have also taken on new team members, so please be patient and give them time to get up to our standards of service.
With regards to the colleague who you believe was drinking an alcoholic beverage behind the bar, we can assure you that it was not alcoholic, out staff are professional about the duties they carry out in our pub.
kindest regards,
The White House

I have to say I’m so glad I stumbled across this beautiful place way back in march 2022. I come up from Thanet to see my partner that was working away in Guildford and came here for lunch to wait for him to finish work. So as I was up here again on a course I decided to walk along the canal back to this little Gem! It was a beautiful warm evening and I sat outside while I ate. Food and wine were beautiful! I must say the butter milk prawn starter was out of this world!! And the setting and ambience was chilled and friendly ( being a dog person I was so happy to be able to make friends with a couple of Labradors sat next to me) The staff were very attentive and polite and made sure I was ok on a few occasions. Any time I’m back in Guildford I will 100% be back at The White House! Thank you so much.

First visit to the pub (& area). Lovely setting by the canal. Staff friendly & polite and coped fairly well with large number of customers.
We ordered haddock & the spatchcock chicken. Haddock was huge and good value for money. However, the spatchcock chicken was possibly the worst we’d ever had. Barely more than three small mouthfuls of meat on it. This with a tiny bit of salad that had a chilli dressing on it so hot, it burnt lips and mouth. In top of that, it was £5 for a side of chips. Absolutely not value for money.
Very disappointed.

The pub was well presented and clean throughout, constant cleaning was in process nice table was vacated
Good coved system in place, following all requirements to the Tee which made us feel safe
Service was friendly and well paced without being hurried as we only had 90 minutes table allocation. Team was knowledgeable and happy to be at work. We were offered table service order by app which was nice as we had a choice
Food was great the 3 different roast and the chilli squash was tasty and well presented, we had extra vegetables for free as part of roast diner and top up of gravy.
It’s expensive but you are being treated to a great meal and high end service plus the prime location
A perfect Sunday lunch only criticism would be a awning would be great for people waiting to get in as it started to rain while queuing to get in due to covid track and trace check ins

its been almost an year since we visited this superb pub, shame we live so far away.
some great fish choices for a warm weather which from what I understood changes on regular basis. lovely presentation of the food, great view of the river and the town, friendly and relax service, really liked the order via app as it meant we did not have to leave the table, queue or got interrupted by a server. rustic looking pub but it works, it is clean and customers are of high class who appreciate quality. must admit I really admired how they staff dealt with couple of rude customers who were out of order and clearly did not belong there.

Visited this pub after a horrible experience at the weyside.
Received a friendly welcome and could not fault our experience.
The food and service was exceptional. The trout was cooked to perfection and all my family members were extremely happy with their meal.
Highly recommended

Hv been before with colleagues. It’s a decent venue, ok menu although some kitchen issues reduced the choices that was fine.
Toilets upstairs.
Remember nearest parking is residents only until 6pm. We parked at Bedford rd & walked which was ok. If you hv disabled passengers drop them off at the White House first.
Didn’t realise it’s dog friendly which is great but we didn’t hv our dog with us we will know Ano time. V friendly dog there with his owner came up for a ‘chat’
Staff were friendly & v helpful.
