Beautifully located and the bar lady was very friendly and welcoming. But the pub itself was very, very tired and over due for a refurb. The food was not good either I'm afraid.

Been here a few times and it's a lovely little country pub surrounded by trees and fields and great in the summer for sitting outside. The staff are nice, the beer is good, the food is great...BUT. The sticky toffee pudding was NOT sticky toffee pudding, it was some sort of sponge hybrid - nice all the same but not... More

We went to this nice looking pub for an evening drink, and having had a hard day walking decided to treat ourselves to a double G&T each. First off, the double of gin was served with just a single tiny bottle of tonic which was completely inadequate to provide a proper balanced drink, and once I had asked the lady... More

This is one of our local pubs. The food is good, like home cooking and keenly priced. It is a quiet pub, although gets lively on the evenings that the cyclist visit (Weds and Thurs eves, after about 8:30). The landlords are lovely, friendly and service is efficient. The garden is lovely and has nice views over Holmbury/Abinger. The carpark... More

It is a lovely pub and you get a great friendly service. However something was terribly wrong with the food yesterday. It was mediocre but by the evening, some of us were feeling we wished we hadn't eaten there. Starters were over priced (£6.95 for two halved boiled eggs with mayo squirted over and salad) for what they were and... More

The welcome each time I visit is so warm that it's like coming home! A wonderful summertime pub, with a beautiful location and gardens. The food is never a disappointment and just what you need whether you've walked, cycled or even just driven there. The belly pork is a favourite of mine, although the pies are a very close second... I have been going to the volunteer for many years, but not lately. I went on Saturday and was disappointed with the standard of food. I had linguini with a "fiery chilli tomato and basil sauce" but it was like a tin of Heinz spaghetti with cheddar cheese on the top! My husband had the cottage pie which was so... More

Lovely pub with friendly staff. Good choice of ales. Food well presented and tasty, portions on the generous side. Set menu and specials board. Friendly helpful landlady. Pretty garden with tables well spaced for outdoor dining.

I was hoping that that The Volunteer might serve food at the top end of traditional pub fare. It was not quite there, the food was perfectly acceptable but somewhat lacking the flare of home cooked pub food I was hoping for. The service was good, friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was traditional, pleasant but without any frills.
