Great pub for walkers, kids, good pub grub

Popped in here with my little boy, and had an enjoyable time, a good ale and good pub grub! There were plenty of walkers coming and going, with dogs and with kids, and there was a roaring fire. A friendly and welcoming place.

Went there based on reviews but stupidly ignored the bad ones which turn out to be accurate. I was very disappointed with the food which took me back to the days of average or below average fare. On entering the Volunteer I was hit with a strong unpleasant smell of cleaning chemicals and in addition the table top was sticky.

Went today for a Sunday lunch pre-walk with friends having read some really positive reviews online. Hard to describe, but it was a real let-down. Poor menu choice. The desserts were all 'Eighties inspired but not very good and the syrup sponge had run out despite us being the second table seated during the lunch sitting. The apple strudel looked... More

I last reviewed the Volunteer in June 2014 and my comments then remain valid. We booked a lunch table for 4 for after a post-Christmas walk (the pub's car park is a great asset if you intend to walk before a meal). Luckily we got in just ahead of several other group of walkers and cyclists, so service was reasonably... More

We picked just the right evening to eat at the Volunteer, as a women's choral group were singing there, and our experience was greatly enhanced by their lovely choral arrangements. The food was excellent too, as was the service, the range of meals on offer - enough but not too many - and the general atmosphere and welcome we received.... More

I honestly thought they'd done a quick trip to the local supermarket to make very poor sandwiches for Sunday lunch . Everything from the presentation of the food, staff and overall cleanliness of the restaurant left a lot to be desired. I know it is marketing itself as a rustic Surrey pub with wholesome food but sometimes you can be... More

7 of us meeting before Christmas to exchange gifts as we won't be all together for the big day. From Henley Farnborough and Eastbourne we converged to this picture postcard pub in the middle of the Surrey hills. We also had our new dog with us fresh from the streets of Kalkan Turkey, and she behaved quite well considering. Apologies... More

The restaurant has changed hands and the new owners (not the Polish couple) have done marvels in their short time there. The food is excellent, with healthy portions of excellent and flavoursome food. My advice is to choose from the roast or the pies, which are full of great meat. Portions are great so puddings are not required. If I... More

We had a warm welcome from the lovely hosts. Service was fast although the restaurant was empty but starter and drinks arrived quickly. The food was quite tasty and plenty of it. It was ok for the price.
