I went to Rafters for a celebratory 21st birthday meal with my family. We had the 8 course tasting menu with wine and it was absolutely divine, by far the best food in Sheffield. All the food was cooked perfectly, I was apprehensive about some of the flavours such as eel, however I was pleasantly surprised. The both the sommelier... More

We were celebrating my daughter-in-law's PhD graduation and six of us were having the 8 course taster menu with the wines selected by the Maitre D' with each course. It was 4 hours of exquisite little surprises and tasting wines we would probably never otherwise have encountered. Each course and wine was fully described, making the meal a learning journey... This is an exceptional restaurant probably the best one in Sheffield. It can honestly claim to do fine dinning. The menu is tasty, very well prepared and it has all the attention to detail that you expect from a place like this. The restaurant itself is nice(could be better but still ok). Wine selection could be better. To summarize: -Food is... More

Took my husband, brother and his girlfriend for a special 21st birthday meal. Easilly one of the best eateries in Sheffield. Great attention to detail throughout, with some scrumptious nibbles inbetween courses and delicious food throughout. Both fish and meat courses cooked superbly, HEAVENLY peanut butter chocolatey dessert to finish. Wine was awesome (if pricey) but if you're eating the... More

We hadn't visited Rafters for a long time and decided to give the new regime a try. I recall from our previous visit a very loud and robust front-of-house lady barking out instructions in the broadest South Yorkshire accent, which must have confused any diner not from these parts. Although also local, Alastair is the complete opposite: quiet and polite,... More

You really cannot fault this place for service, cooking, wine, etc. But... it just needs a tiny dose of crack cocaine to liven itself up and show the established Sheffield clientele that there are some amazing things can be accomplished with food. There is nowhere in this city pushing boundaries and these guys have got the talent, FOH and in... More

Lovely experience in a small restaurant. Our visit was a celebration for our Granddaughter celebrating her Graduation. A bit on the chilly side to begin with - we booked early - but we soon warmed up. The food was beautifully cooked and presented. The wine list is limited but some good choices to be had. The steep staircase leading to... More

Don't let the unassuming entrance, above a double glazing shop, on an unassuming road in Sheffield lead you to any misinterpretation of what lies behind the door and the dining experience you'll enjoy. We'd all heard of Rafters and the opportunity to celebrate a good set of results was the perfect opportunity to visit. First challenge was to decide between... More

We went just before Christmas, and had the taster menu. Eight courses, up to 12 with all the minor bits and bobs they throw in. Front of house was very good. One of the owners maitre-d-ed, well. Wine list was not vast, but had enough on it to be interesting. The food was very good: modern, European, very tasting, high... More

The New Years Eve taster menu was amazing probably some of the best food we have ever eaten. One of our party is allergic to fish and with prior notice her menu was the equal of ours .The staff are attentive and informative but never intrusive .The decor ambiance and attention to detail are second to none .Alistair is a... Description
Opened in 1994 and now under the ownerships of Manager Alistair Myers and Chef Tom Lawson Rafters has long been accepted as one of Sheffield's finest restaurants. The combination of the highly skilled & creative cooking of Tom and the kitchen team partnered with the knowledgeable, friendly and relaxed service of Alistair and the front of house team partners to make the best dining experience possible. Both brought up locally Alistair went to Tapton School where he did his work placement at the Forte Post house and has been hooked on the catering industry ever since.Leaving school at 16 to pursue his chosen career in a work based modern apprenticeship Alistair has worked in some of the best Hotels and Restaurants in Sheffield and the surrounding area learning his trade always with the ultimate ambition of opening his own restaurant one day.

Tom started cooking at the age of 13 when he was first introduced to the highly regarded Sheffield College for a one week cookery course in the summer holidays whilst at High Storrs. It was this initial introduction that sparked his passion and ultimately led him back to Sheffield College where he completed his Professional Chefs diploma and was named college chef of the year. After leaving college Tom has worked at the highest level in Restaurants and Pubs in Sheffield and the surrounding area, maintaining and gaining local, regional & national recognition wherever he has cooked.

Working together for the past 5 years it is the shared vision that dining is about the whole experience and not just the kitchen or dining room that brought Alistair & Tom together to embark on the journey of running their own restaurant working together as one team with the goal always being to delight and satisfy the customer.
