We had and biscuits upstairs really relaxing and we had lovely homemade shortbread and a nice waiter. Would go again. A proper old fashioned hotel.

We had dinner for three midweek. Lovely ambience of an old coaching inn, comfortable with well spaced tables. Friendly and professional service. The menu was imaginative and the food delicious, well-presented. In particular the smoked salmon, a chunk, not the usual slice, was miraculously tender. Portions reasonable (i.e. not too big) so we were comfortable having dessert. Nice wine list... More

I had a pleasant stay, its an old 13th century building but very well maintained. The rooms are well ventilated and have all the amenities for a comfortable stay. Breakfast spread is good with a decent spread and fresh food served with care and attention. The staff in the restaurant are quite professional. The room service needs perseverance to reach... More

Very good food and service for a party of 8. Not too many patrons eating which was surprising for a Saturday night.

Every MacDonald Hotel I have visited has been fantastic, and this was no exception. It is a charming half-timbered inn in central Woodstock. Be sure to try their fish n chips.

Visited for drinks on Saturday afternoon whilst staying in Woodstock for Elton John concert at Blenheim, ordered a glass of Moët rose champagne to be corrected in pronunciation by the young inexperienced girl behind the bar, she then poured the remainder of a flat bottle into a glass to which I asked for a fresh bottle to be poured, she... We called in to the Bear on off chance to get an early dinner before a concert. The service is very haphazard and a bit amateurish for this level of establishment. We both just had a burger which was fine. The wine is very expensive and so we finally ordered a 500ml carafe of Pinot for £20. Ridiculous for a... More

We chose the restaurant from several others nearby based on the exciting menu on the website but none of this was on offer. The pleasant waitress had no idea who to serve first nor about laying cutlery. The food was banal, not bad.

Was visiting Woodstock and got caught out in the rain so decided to go for a quick drink in the hotel front bar. Very quaint and really lovely staff. Tried their local IPA beer which was nice. Enjoyed chilling out here before we faced the rain again

Description
The Bear has an impressive princely past and it's a hotel steeped in the tradition of the area. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor started their love affair and at the height of their passion, played out much of the drama at The Bear. As you would expect, traditional is the order of the day and exposed beams, fireplaces and antiques create the perfect setting for business or a romantic lunch or dinner.
What's cooking?
Anything from warm apple crustade with Anglaise sauce and noisettes of lamb with grilled vegetable gateaux and a rosemary jus, to smoked salmon and fennel soup and baked cod fillet with a tomato compote and broccoli hollandaise.
