A relaxed and picturesque location on the west bank of the Cherwell. Punters provide entertainment - often unintentionally! On a sunny day, we sat in the conservatory - half open and airy. Friendly waiters made us welcome. The kitchen needs to focus more on taste and less on appearance. A starter of pané (fried) feta was tasty & well presented.... More

8 people for dinner after a business meeting. We arrived early (6pm) but the place quickly got busy (even on a chilly Thursday). The food was good if slightly small portions. Service attentive. The best thing is the location by a punting station. In better weather combining a meal and a punt would be superb!

I really can't praise the Cherwell Boathouse enough. I have been coming here for years and each time I'm impressed by not only the food but the service. My took one of the colleagues from one of our overseas offices here while she was visiting and it was a sheer delight. Without doubt the best restaurant in Oxford in my... More

We came here for a friend's wedding reception. The upstairs marquee was a great venue, with views over the river and the fields beyond. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and the food was of a really good quality. It's a little way out of town, but well worth making the effort to find.

Booked for 13 people for family birthday. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Let us sit inside whilst the rest of the party went punting even though they were closed. We had pre ordered our food, everything came out in a timely manner, and the food was delicious, beautifully presented. Bit like being a taster for the master chef finals. One... More

We had a great welcome and had a drink before our other friends arrived. The menu is short which is OK. Our companions had a fish starter which they weren't too impressed with. We had mackerel in crumbs which was more like an amuse-bouche. It was OK. I had lamb and my wife had duck - the meat was very... More

The new head chef did a brilliant job for his first tasting dinner. Everything looked great and tasted good too. As usual the wines were interesting and the pairings had been well thought through. The Boathouse is a lovely venue, the staff are excellent and the food is a treat. It was a most enjoyable evening. Thank you.

Ten of us in our family party, from teenagers upwards, and without exception we all loved our meals. The service was polite and friendly, and timed just right so we didn't feel either rushed, or as if we were forgotten. I had the mushrooms on toast, followed by two types of duck, and finished off with the three textures of... More

I booked the marquis for my daughter's 21st birthday tea party and mine and my daughter's expectations were fully met if not surpassed. We were fortunate to have a beautiful warm balmy day so the doors were all flung open affording an open view of the river. The staff were attentive and couldn't have done more to help and the... You've planned an afternoon punting a la Sebastian Flyte - you've got the boater, the stripy blazer, the wind-up gramophone and the obligatory teddy bear, but whoops, forgotten the picnic. Instead of eating sweaty sandwiches, plan your punting excursion round eating at Cherwell Boathouse. Owned and run by the same family for the past 30 years, Cherwell Boathouse, as its name suggests is right on the banks of the Isis (Oxford speak for the Thames) in a truly scenic spot. The restaurant is small and intimate with a beautiful terrace but not twee. The atmosphere is buzzy and lively and there is a huge range of age groups. However, if you are truly set on a picnic, the restaurant will organise a hamper for a minimum of 15 people if you pre-order.
What's cooking:
Fish Terrine with a light crab mayo; fragrant Thai broth, crispy sea bream with courgette and carrot tagliatelle on a bed of noodles with a tomato and caper jus; baked breast of mallard with a cranberry compote; white chocolate and ginger torte; chocolate layered crepe cake.
