While in Oxford, we felt that we had to visit the place where CS Lewis and J R R Tolkein wrote all their books. We were not disappointed. Reasonably priced, especially with its legacy in mind, keeping a lot of original character, this was a...More

Being a fan of Tolkien and Lewis, this place totally gave me the chills once I was in! Food and drinks are great but the atmosphere and the Vibes of it is what makes it extraordinary place to be!

Although I went there for lunch when I first got to Oxford, when it was crowded and we sat on stools across from the bar, my real experience happened on a Sunday afternoon after visiting Tolkien's grave. We took the bus back from Wolvercote cemetary...More

Historic and often crowded, associated with Tolkein and CS Lewis. The food is good and the beer selection is excellent. The meat pies have a flaky,, almost filo, quality. Light and Delicious! Good fish and chips. Sometimes crowded, especially during happy hour.

Hi, thank you so much for your positive comments about The Eagle and Child!

First visit since coming here as an undergraduate 40 odd years ago, to find that it's hardly changed. The Tolkien/CS Lewis connection is played up these days (ignored in the 70's) and the old nickname has been sanitised as 'the bird and baby' but basically...More

Lovely little traditional pub in Oxford. Great amount of different types of gin as well as tasty menu with both mains and snacks. Full of history and definitely worth a visit whilst in Oxford :)

We went here to see the C. S. Lewis table, but the food was really very good. The atmosphere was that of the classic English Pub. I highly recommend eating here. I reserved the C. S. Lewis table in person, but it might be possible...More

My husband was desperate to see this very old pub, where the "Inklings" met - Tolkien, C.S. Lewis et al. We were greeted and served by enthusiastic and friendly staff and very well looked after, while we had a drink and soaked up the atmosphere....More

If you are a Tolkein or C.S.Lewis fan then this is a must. It is a really small pub that has been opened out a bit at the back and needless to say it gets very busy. If you can sit nearer the front to...More
