L'Antica Locanda is a unique, culinary Italian experience not to be missed.

Situated as it is on The Shambles in the heart of the City of York, this restaurant has been established for over ten years. Its menu offers an unusual variety of Italian dishes, some of them specialities of Puglia and Sardinia.

The atmosphere is about as Italian as you can get and the cosy upstairs restaurant area provides a welcome relief from the hustle and bustle of the busy Shambles, with Italian music and a superb decor transporting the diner straight into 'a piece of Southern Italy'.

Great food in a fantastic location.

We passed the restaurant whilst walking along the Shambles and popped in to book a table for that evening. The owner was sitting eating lunch with his family, which I thought was a good sign. We returned that evening and had starters which were very well presented and generous. We then had salmon... read more

My partner and I were in the restaurant on the night previously mentioned by a couple of reveiwers and I can confirm the guy was pretty drunk , he came over to our table and was quite amusing although he became a bit of a nuisance after a short while but one of the staff ushered him away when this... Excellent food, staff attentive, food came quickly. Amazed it was so busy on a Monday night in November. Will definitely be back.

All the main chicken dishes and the puddings – tiramisu and profiteroles - as well as the goat cheese dish were fresh, average in taste but not outstanding. The Trebbiano – the house wine – was an excellent dry white though we weren’t offered any water, mineral or otherwise. The service was efficient, intelligent and courteous and the whole meal... The owner is an embarrassment. He was rude beyond belief, and made us feel like criminals because some of our party were unable to make the meal. He had the audacity to still charge us for food we hadn't eaten, and took 2 hours to serve it to us. Whether he was drunk, I don't know, but I'll never be... More

Eight of us came here for a birthday meal and we had a lovely time. Their menu is all you could hope for from a traditional restaurant like this, and includes lots of authentic dishes. You can have a lower priced meal, or opt for some of the more expensive specials on the various boards on the wall. Our choices... More

This is a wonderfully authentic, value-for money Italian restaurant with a very high quality food offering. This is a cramped, front room-style restaurant and so don't expect much space between tables. The welcome received on arrival was good and we were quickly shown to the tables upstairs. Service was timely, if unhurried (good) with drinks offering first. Our starters were... More

This was a very very disappointing experience. We booked a large table for a Christmas meal with friends. We arrived as booked at 8.30 and didn't get main courses until 10.30. It's true that six people out of 18 did not show up. Annoying but not a reason to treat us the way the manager did. Infact, two people left... More
