We stumbled across the Royal Oak while we was in York for a couple of days, so called in for a meal. The bar staff were very polite and welcoming, we both had fish & chips i must say the best fish I've had in a long time and homemade chips delicious. Prices on the menu were reasonable hosted a... For a chain pub it was ok, things a bit disorderly on our arrival wasn't to clear if you could sit to eat or wait to be seated, it was the latter😲. Food average and of the frozen variety.

Walking the walls on a hot day we came down and into the Royal Oak for some refreshment. The landlord was genuinely friendly and gave us 20p a pint Camra discount. It was built in the 17th century and has oak panelling and several rooms though the toilets are up lots of stairs. For us, this was one of the... More

had Sunday dinner the beef was chewy and tasted as if had been re-heated. The veg was frozen not fresh, which was disappointing and they had no roast potatoes left!!!. I took mash instead and my daughter took chips. Chips were fine but the mash had definately been under a grill. A bit disappointed staff were helpful and friendly.

We are slightly confused, on the Sunday before you wrote the review we didn't run out of ‘roasts’ or serve anything frozen. Are you 100% sure you are writing a review on the correct pub in York, there are several ‘chain’ pubs around us? More

Always visit this pub when in York. The blues music on Wednesdays is amazing - and free! Excellent real estate too!

Great dinner and good food if you want an authentic English pub. We all enjoyed the food and drinks, and they were reasonably priced

After reading recent reviews for the Royal Oak my wife and myself booked a table for two on Tuesday 7th June at 7:30pm and were made most welcome by both the manager and bar staff. As the pub was virtually empty there would appear to have been no need to have booked a table and we were given the option... More

Had a drink one evening , popped back the next day for evening meal, service excellent prices reasonable, charming dining room. good music, pub has entertainment but not during our visit, would use the pub again. Very attractive frontage, looks very inviting, tends to be not so busy as on perimeter right next to city walls. Recommended!

We arrived at 7.45pm on Sunday having just about given up trying to find a pub still serving food. We were welcomed like old friends by Karl who immediately went to find out if the kitchen was still open, it was and we ordered the Sunday Roast which was absolutely delicious melt in the mouth roast beef, Yorkshire Pudding and... A Monday lunch to celebrate our daughter's 44th. We were 7 and had asked for a separate room. We were treated like Royals and the food and drinks just came coming. Well prepared and well presented. We really had a great time thanks to a very attentive service. Absolutely a must in York.
