Lovely meal, great if you like fish. Service was very good and welcoming atmosphere. Well worth a visit and somewhere I will go back to on future visits to York.

We've been to the blue bicycle a few times now when we've been in York . The restaurant was recommended to us by an assistant at the mulberry shop ( the reason for our trip..... Handbag shopping) I could to be honest have something different...More

We ate here on two nights, excellent food atmosphere and service. Predominately a sea food restaurant I had smoked pork and beef shin and oxtail for a starter and wife had the scallops first evening and monk fish and halibut with a side of fries...More

Great menu (doesn't change that often though) with knowledgable staff that want to please. Quirky surroundings - this pace has some interesting history! Book ahead and ask for a 'booth' downstairs. You'll love it. Not the cheapest meal out with average priced wine etc. Great...More

We had a great dinner on a night when the basement was open. They had a live musician that was the perfect volume and made the ambiance very enjoyable.

Really great ambience (even beyond the novelty of it being a former brothel where the booths down stairs are converted beds). Food was excellent. Staff was very friendly (but is it ever not in Britain?). Would definitely go back.

A lot could be written about this restaurant, but the word 'pretentious' would probably have to be put in most of the sentences. I guess it all comes down to your perception of value. The food is well cooked, but the portions are tiny, so...More

You can get tired of pub food in tourist sites in the UK, so when we dined here we were simply delighted. The bread in little flower pots was a little gimmicky, but the bread was very good and hearty. The wine was not quite...More

So this was a place of ill repute. The booths are still intact downstairs, the decor is so interesting, and the doors downstairs open onto the canal. Ah but we were here to eat. Superb complimentary 'bread course' and the rest was great too. Lots...More

This was a return visit to the Blue Bicycle for a special occasion based on a previous good experience. It started well with a pleasant welcome and lovely quirky booth table. However the food was a real disappointment - dry overcooked fish in a specialty...More

This place is temporarily closed due to flooding on Dec 27, 2015. We do not anticipate being open before the 2nd Quarter of 2017. We will provide further updates on an estimated reopening date as we have this information available.

Located near York Minster, The Blue Bicycle has become one of York's dining landmarks. With a French style English menu heavily weighted towards fish dishes, an unpretentious, welcoming atmosphere, professional French waiters, and charming decor, it is no wonder this eaterie is often packed. The downstairs is particularly romantic and atmospheric -- it is allegedly a former brothel and the decor is true to it's blue period. Menu favourites include the chef's own spicy fish cakes with pineapple salsa, and grilled scallops with sweet chilli sauce to start, followed by a steaming bowl of monkfish and prawn chowder, or tuna with red onion, lime and coriander salsa.
