This place is a real one off. Walking upstairs to the bar was a journey back in time. Great atmosphere with a fantastic range of ales. Food looked delicious with generous helpings and the staff were a delight. Will definitely be returning when I next visit York.

We popped in here to have some lunch as the smells coming from inside were amazing! We were not disappointed. Lovely atmosphere, brilliant food and really friendly staff. We returned the next day for lunch again! It does get very busy quickly so get in quick!

this place is hidden above a shop that sells about every spirit you can imagine. Once upstairs we found ourselves in a small room that dated back hundreds of years. The beers were a tad starnge but its a place you must visit at least once.

We've visited this place both times we've been to York. It's a great little pub that sells good beer and rustic food. Their menu is great, the stews, served with crusty bread, are excellent! You have to be lucky to get a table, as the pub is very popular and gets busy. Downstairs is their off licence where they have... More

Visited on a very busy Sunday afternoon. Managed to grab a stool at the bar. Lots of people eating but we just had a pint. Wide range of lagers & beers. Staff very knowledgeable. After having food before, we would definitely go again. Very quirky pub

We went into the off licence downstairs to have a look at some beers without realising there was a bar upstairs. Very steep steps to get up to it and quite small but that only added to the atmosphere. Spent a lot longer than planned trying out the different beers on offer. Friendly staff and the food looked nice and... More

Me and my partner love this place, we visited for the first time yesterday. Surprisingly given how busy it was we had a table straight away. We shared a madness platter which was the perfect amount of food. The decor is second to none and the blue haired bar maid serving us was very helpful. Really impressed!

Your one-stop shop! Liquor, beer and wine sales on the ground floor, awesome pub with really, really good food upstairs. Pub is tiny, but the epitome of cozy with beamed walls and ceiling, festooned with taxidermy and other... mementos. Menu features various "platters" that offer several tastes of the local cuisine on one plate. Loved it!!

We had heard about this place and decided to pay a visit during our recent trip to York. Downstairs is a shop selling a vast array of beers from around the world, upstairs is a small bar done out in an old worldly way with lots of stuffed animal heads on the walls. It is worth a visit

This is a medieval ale house and specialist beer merchant/store. It is simply amazing, the quirky food is excellent - robust cheeseboards , pies, stews, best locally sourced ingredients and has a 5 start rating from hygiene standards. They also have some amazing holiday apartments, check out their website
