After spending a night in York my husband suggested that we try this place, and it is well worth a visit. A very relaxed atmosphere and food made to order. It was early in the day and we had not had breakfast, so decided on the breakfast menu. I enjoyed a bacon sandwich and my husband opted for the Yorkshire... More

We had a nice, heavy, lunch at this awesome place incl. Yorkshire and Madness Platters as well as Chicken and Steak pies. The quality is very good and the portions are huge. All is prepared and re-heated behind the counter on the 1st floor. This place really works for a nice and cozy lunch or dinner with friends and beer.

My favourite pub in York. Great atmosphere and always quality beer. They have a dubbel on draught. Watch out for it, it is very strong but delicious. Only drink in halves. You have been warned.

Fantastic place to buy beers from - a tad expensive for us Northerners. Staff are very clued up and nice to deal with - if you want to use the upstairs dining and have a drink - get there early

We really enjoyed having a drink here...good music, staff and environs. The food, however, was decidedly average. After reading reviews our expectations were high. We ordered the steak and ale pie and got a tasty pastry and gravy pie with exactly 3 pieces of steak. The mash was made with watery potatoes. The madness side salad was average. Come and... More

Sorry you didn't enjoy the food we'll do our best to address the issues. If you mention it at the time we'll swap it over or refund it, that's the traditional way to approach things before Tripadvisor and it saves you money. Very seldomly we have a pie with less steak in as the pie company ladle it from the... More

Enjoying a beer in a vibrant piece of history, you can't beat it. Even if you just walk upstairs to check the place out, it is an interesting site and worth the time.

The animal hides and narrow benches make this look like a kind of medieval banquet hall (which I suppose it used to be?). Will visit again and next time will get some food too, which smelled delicious.

Such a cute and unique place. Simple menu, made behind the bar in a mini kitchen! Consisting of platters and MASSIVE hearty pub grub staples. Great selection of ales and IPAs. Love the fact you go through the shop to get to the pub and both open until 12 a.m. In the city for business and will be back both... More
