I booked this restaurant as a birthday treat for my husband as we were staying in York for the weekend. Having never been to York before I booked it based purely on the excellent reviews I'd read and wasn't disappointed. The staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing and the little touches such as water on the table and... More

After a full day's cold sightseeing in York, this was a wonderful venue to relax and enjoy a good some good food and a glass of wine. We were welcomed in out of the cold at 5.00, although they did not officially open until 5.30 and made to feel very comfortable. The meal that followed was well served, well presented... More

Back in York for a stop on our long journey south, we decided we had to revisit The Go Down on the strength of our last visit in the summer. Once again we weren't disappointed - in terms of quality, taste and good old fashioned service this is simply one of the best restaurants in the City. Having had a... More

Took my parents for a meal here with my brother. Food was great with good portions that actually filled you unlike some 'posh restaurants'. Service was prompt and welcoming. Place was clean and tidy. Even had Christmas crackers for us. I don't like when the service charge is automatically generated on the bill and usually refuse to pay it out... More

Word of warning: Do not book through OpenTable. We were lucky in that tables were available ... book directly. Lesson learned. The food is magnificent. Especially if you are gluttonous. Fantastic fresh bread with really quite wonderful olive oil and then balsamic vinegar, followed by a HUGE black pudding starter with tonnes of gravy - was a bit unsure but... More

We had a booking for the Saturday evening of our annual Christmas shopping trip to York. We were welcomed by the owner and staff who were friendly and extremely busy as the place was full. The food was fantastic as was the wine, the service also was top quality. We have been visiting York for at least 10 years and... More

We arrived at 8:00 on Monday evening without a reservation. They found us a table even though they were very busy. The staff were pleasant friendly and helpful throughout. We all ate from the a LA carte menu although there is a very reasonably priced set menu available as well. All the food we ordered was superb especially the King... More

Went to Go Down last night with 3 friends for dinner and what a treat it was, Buzzing atmosphere, warm welcome and a genuine friendliness from staff and proprietor all of whom remained calm and cheerful despite a full restaurant in which all the patrons seemed to be indulging in a full 3 courses, our black pudding and potato Rossi... Really pleased we reserved a table as it was really busy this Sunday evening. Staff were very friendly and located across from theatre here is prefect for a meal beforehand. Food wise the french onion soup was wonderful. The mushroom risotto was and a lovely big portion. The steak was cooked well and served with a basket of hand cut... More

We wanted to eat at this place for a long while but as we are usually day trippers and the restaurant doesn't open until 5.30pm we haven't managed it. As we had a overnight stay in York we decided to give it a go and have to say it was delicious. Hubby had cod loin and I had duck best... More
