First time here after recommendation from friends. We found the food to be excellent, the staff very friendly, prompt service and good value for money. The only complaint is the cramped nature of the restaurant, the tables are very close together and our table was squeezed onto a corner on the route to the toilets! There really should have been... We ate here last night before going to the theatre so early booking was needed. We were there at 1730 as soon as it opened but they were ready for us and a few others. We were welcomed warmly, very nice. But best, the food was great. The black pudding starter was great as was the venison for main. My... More

Six of us ate here on Saturday evening and no-one left disappointed. The food was excellent - my black pudding and rosti starter was delicious and plentiful, the lamb shank fell beautifully from the bone and had a superb flavour, the well stocked cheese board came with a decent glass of port. The experience was enhanced by the staff who... More

On a weekend break with my wife in York and booked a table for Saturday night. I had the medallions of beef and my wife had chicken teriyaki with pak choi and noodles. Both meals were utterly delicious and came with a lovely selection of vegetables. Menu is not too large or pretentious. Just really good food that isn't overpriced.... More

We visited the Go Down on our trip to York, WOW we were so pleased to have eaten here, what amazing flavoured food, great service and friendly staff. We ate off the Fixed Price menu and at £16.50 for 2 courses this was amazing value for the quality of food we were served. The only thing I can say I... More

First time here, really impressed, food amazing, staff excellent service. I had Frito Misto, hubby had Black Pudding starter, beautiful! Then he had chicken in a cream sauce, I had the Confit duck with beautiful fresh veg, absolutely no faults, will be back again on next visit!

Having just returned from York. We ate this restaurant and was very pleased with the quality of the food. Firstly we where met with a smile and seated at our table quickly and our coats were taken and hung up. We were brought water to the table and complimentary bread and dips. We ordered from the set meal menu 2... More

At first we were sat at a draughty table near the door and were moved without actually asking. However was disappointed with the whole thing. No butter with complimentary bread. Only oil and balsamic. Plates for mains were cold so food cooled off quickly. Coffee machine broken... cafetieres only! And an inbuilt service charge. Not as good as it used... More

It's a slightly quirky little place at basement level, though with windows onto the street. Although it was busy when we got there, the service was good, and the staff very attentive. The food was very good. I had the vegetarian curry, which was delicious! Would recommend.

We were visiting York for my girlfriends birthday weekend and I wanted to book a nice meal for her. Never having visited York before I looked to tripadvisor to find somewhere good. I picked The Go Down and it did not disappoint. When we walked in the decor was very simple and understated. We were warmly greeted and shown to... More
