Had one of the best meals I've had in a long time (mushroom risotto starter and lamb on a bed of lentils to follow). Four of us all enjoyed our meal - the lemon tart was particularly enjoyed by our friend. This family restaurant prides itself on good service and hearty food. The bread comes as a whole loaf, warm... On our annual visit to York we paid our usual visit to The Go Down, having reserved a table. This was very necessary as the restaurant was very busy during one of York's busiest weeks(Ebor race meeting). The food was excellent and very good value, particularly the Fixed Price menus which are available throughout the evening. You can have a one,... More

We opted for the fixed price menu and were not disappointed. I had the Beignets which were light and very tasty and my husband had the Yorkshire pudding. The warm bread with oils was a pleasant surprise which we very much enjoyed. For main course we had the Cod loin and a steak both of which were beautifully cooked and... More

This is a bistro restaurant that I revisited after a couple if years . Nice to see that the great loaf of bread is still served . I ordered the cod loin it was a little over cooked in my opinion & that spilt it a little but still very tasty , the side of veg had spiced red cabbage... More

We could see the chef working from the street outside and it looked very clean so we went in. We chose the set 3 course menu and there was a good variety, the food was excellent, really good, free fresh bread too and a bottle of water with the meal. The staff were very attentive and we really enjoyed everything... More

Although it was very highly rated, the staff were clearly inexperienced, the food very simple and it lacked flare. I appreciated the fact that the tables were full and the diners looked happy but I had much higher expectations.

Fine describes this experience, nothing on the starter menu appealed, the staff were young and inexperienced and the food was fine. I asked for rare steak, I got medium- it was ok.

We always visit The Go Down when in York and have enjoyed every meal. It has been given a makeover giving it a fresh modern open feel. Still giving you complimentary hot bread with oils now ( we asked for butter though) before starters. Hubby had the black pudding and bacon starter and I enjoyed prawn and melon cocktail. Mains...
