Visited the famous magpie cafe today for some fish and chips. I was extremely disappointed with everything, from the extremely slow service time, to the loud obnoxious disinterested staff. The quality of the fish was also lacking. Should have taken Clarksons advice and gone to "mister chips" which I later did and it was incredible !

Food is always great here, especially if you try something other than cod & chips (although that is amazing too). Only one let down is the extremely slow service that we have experienced on every visit here which we think leads to the queues for the restaurant that are there all the time.

We came on a Friday evening, arrived at 7.40 expecting a long que but were pleasantly surprised to see that only about 8 people were ahead of us so thought it would be a short wait. We qued for an hour and 15 minutes during which time 3 groups of people who'd booked a table went in. The food was... More

It's not cheap, but it's the best fish and chips you'll eat anywhere and the menu has loads of lovely specials on it too. Save up and head on in.

I've been to quite a lot of fish and chip restaurants in my time but none that are in the same league as the Magpie. The fish is bright white and so soft it falls off your fork and the batter melts in your mouth. Tartar sauce is nice with it too and I don't usually like tartar sauce !... More

Opposite the Fish Market it is apparent that the fish is fresh. We went for the take away part and it is very busy, queues are not uncommon but worth the wait. If you go for something like Hake or Skate then be prepared to wait whilst it is freshly fried. Large portions too.

Every time we come to Whitby we somehow manage to be drawn towards the Magpie. We look at other places but always are drawn to it. Why? Friendly, efficient staff and of course their great tasting food. I usually always have the Seafood plater - which I did again. Superb. Dont let the ques put you of, they always seem... More

The Magpie takeaway & cafe always have a queue! Our first visit 2 years ago we used the takeaway, had to queue but it wasn't too long, staff work quickly. Our visit this week was to the cafe, been walking miles & wanted a break! We didn't go until 3.30pm so no queue & we were seated quickly. Staff polite... More
