I stopped here for a pint after walking along the Thames on a lovely sunny afternoon. It does not have much of a river view compared to pubs further along the river but as a fan of William Hogarth I chose this establishment, as it features in one of his artworks. Needing to use the facilities I asked for the... More

Dear Mr Barklay Thank you for your recent review, it is difficult to reply, because most of the review is about what you think we are thinking and your perception of our attitudes. All I can say is that we are known for our friendly outgoing staff, and I am known for my banter - clearly you missed both, so... More

Busy on entering but we had a nice table in the end Friendly and attentive staff Food was nicely presented , nice and hot and tasty We all had three courses and all the food was very good Portions were good sizes If there was only one criticism it would be the fries. They were really skinny and quite hard... More

Hi Linda Thank you for your kind comments, on your next visit - I will make sure that you get chips, not fries - we stock both as everyone has a particular preference on the size of their cut, deep fried potatoes! More

Visited tonight on spec with some colleagues, loved the welcome and ambience. Two for one pizza was a nice surprise, others enjoyed the calamari and steak very much too. Very cosy traditional pub with top rate food.

Went for Sunday lunch and was somewhat disappointing. Not terrible but nothing to compliment - had pork and beef in our party if 7, Yorkshire puddings were cold (had to be sent back) and rest of it rather uninspiring...lacked taste and smell. Shame, as pub looked promising!

Hi Georgia Thank you for the additional feedback, we were aware of the issue with the Yorkshire puddings, but unaware that you found the meal bland. Rest assured I will be having a meeting with my kitchen team and we will get things rapidly back to our normal high standards. More

Chicken salad - very dry meat. Not a lot for the money. Chicken looked distinctly undress hence it being dry. Chorizo Hash - plenty of sausage but hard to spot the spinach. Presentation was unfortunate - would have expected some evidence of frying. Veggie burger was tasty but bread impossible to get in my mouth. Bread to think for such... More

Came here for a birthday dinner on Sunday after being let down at a nearby pub. Despite being a small place and busy, they found us a table straight away and took our order. The landlord overheard that I was vegan and, although their menu doesn't really cater to vegans, promised to check with the chef to see what he... More

Description
The Black Lion is an iconic country pub on the north bank of the River Thames between Hammersmith and Chiswick. History abounds at this wonderful pub - ghost stories, local history and what 'The Black Lion' really meant, made famous in literature and the location of a world famous skittle alley. Our aim is to be a hub in the local community and a comfortable pitstop for any tourists or passers by. Always warm and welcoming The Black Lion combines the tradition of a classic English pub with superb English and British ales and lovely fresh food and a fabulous wine list. We all grew up and have lived in the area for many years and have known the pub as customers long before we became lucky enough to take over at the helm! We are delighted with our local connections through The Skittle Alley, Coffee and Pantry and Little Lake, our own florist and host a lively farmers market every Saturday. And once a year we are the very best place - along the whole of the Thames to view the annual Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.
