Really top notch food - way, way better than any of the Brick Lane places, that no longer seem to care or try. Particular shout out to the chops and shashlick. And service to match, to really make the meal an occasion. This place has...a local feel and clearly a loyal clientele, who know good food, good value and enjoy the charming personal service. Added bonus is that they are right next door to a proper old school East London local pub - Gentlemen, what's not to like! This is, in my 54 year old and 15 plus stone opinion, is the best old school Indian I have found in London. Note that - for obvious reasons beyond their control and punitive to their hard earned business - they are closed at lunchtime just now.More

I have been a eating qt the Empress for over fifteen years which in itself is a testimony to the quality of the food and the good level of service. Being a creature of habit I usually start with the Jingha garlic followed by the...Dhaka murgh with sometimes a shepherds pie to be shared with friends. It is a short walk away from the tourist trap that is Brick Lane and whenever I am in town The Empress or its sister restaurant The Shad in Tooley street are always my choices for a curry.More
