A lovely setting with great views across Westminster but an expensive (in my opinion) menu, so one for special occasions. The food is fabulous.

I love this restaurant overlooking the roof of the National Gallery. A glass of champagne, or the special English tea is a treat and perfect for taking visitors to London for the first time.

We always book a table and get the window seats. Noon is best, later can be crowded. See the gallery, then take the elevator. View of Big Ben, Trafalgar roof tops. Never a complaint.

Like most of the restaurants I've been too recently in London, the Portrait is overpriced. But the food is indeed good, the service stylish, and the view quite pleasant. The location is of course quite convenient.

The NPG Restaurant is in a league of its own. I met with a friend for breakfast and the service was exemplary, as it always it. I am so proud to be a Londoner, and enjoy such an incredible experience. Breakfast was delicious, and so reasonable for the quality and views provided. Such a gem. Thank you again

The restaurant is relatively small with three rows of tables meaning most people will get a view over the rooftops. We found the menu great and service very good - not intrusive but always there refilling water and wine. Never a need to look for a waiter and never a waiter hovering. The food was lovely and there was nothing... More

We enjoyed the pre-theatre menu here when recently going to a show with visiting family members. The food was absolutely yummy - we have taken special inspiration from the buttery, minted jersey royals. However, the service made this dining experience. The service was caring and attentive; this really helped to make it feel like a special occasion. Overall a wonderful... More

This is a great way to cap a visit to the National Portrait Gallery--possibly London's most entertaining museum. The restaurant has a splendid view over the city. The good is very good, the wine list extensive and varied, and the service punctilious and gracious. A lovely place.

Perfect meal - 10 out of 10. The young waiters were immaculate and so polite and helpful, food was delicious and the views over London - extraordinary. You won't be disappointed.

Every year my son finds something unusual & interesting. This restaurant is situated at the top of the National Portrait Gallery so it is both in an interesting place & has a superb view. Pity that some of the buildings are not lit up as abroad. The food was delicious for fish lovers but my son had veal with a... More

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
