We had a pre theatre menu which was excellent value. I had an Earl Grey G&T which was fantastic. The service was top class with our waiter giving helpful advice as well as being very efficient without making us feel rushed. The food was all delicious which is unusual on a pre theatre menu.

Wife and I went to the National Portrait Gallery (NPG) to see the Picasso Portraits Exhibition which was very good. We wanted to have lunch at the NPG so booked ahead, a must in our experience because this is a very popular venue. Got a great table by a window with a pleasant view over the rooftops of nearby London... More

I took my god-daughter to dinner. Passing mention of a recent birthday, overheard as we bundled her gift into the cloaks cupboard, led to a chocolate surprise that topped the evening. All so discreetly done and warm smiles of delight afterwards from our charming waiter and the attentive hostess who had welcomed us - and with such keen hearing. Oh,... More

I had a reservation for 6 p.m. on Saturday October 8th for a Pre-Theatre meal. I arrived early, but was seated promptly. I ordered fish and was advised it would take about 15 minutes to prepare. My fish arrived in about 10 minutes time. When I cut into the middle of the fish it was not done. I looked for... More

Within the National Portrait Gallery but accessible outside the NPG's normal opening hours lies a superb restaurant. Once again it is not the cheapest in town but the quality of the food is very good even from the limited choice pre-theatre menu. The service is also of a high level and most people could not be disappointed with either service... More

My husband and I hadn't booked, but were still lucky enough to get a table as the restaurant was busy. The view over the skyline of London is just amazing, especially on a clear sunny day. The people watching in the restaurant as well was also first class! The food was delicious, a reasonable fixed price menu but the wine... More

I started going to the Portrait Restaurant at least 10 years ago. Since then it has been through many chefs and at least one design makeover. Whatever iteration it is in, the food and the space have always been terrific. You sit looking over Trafalgar square to Big Ben and the London Eye. It's almost as though Nelson waves at... More

I haven't been here for years, but it's just as good as I remembered. We reserved a window seat, and sat in the autumn sunshine looking at the great view and eating very lovely food. Highly recommended.

The Portrait Restaurant is located on the top floor of the National Portrait Gallery by Trafalgar Square London. Nice service and good food. I had the haddock and then the sea-bass followed by a creme brulee as the Sunday brunch menu suggested. The view over the Town is amazing and worth a visit. Must try.

I have reviewed this restaurant previously. It is on the top floor of the National Portrait Gallery. The service is impeccable and friendly, and the quality of the food is excellent. Similarly the wine we drank, the fifth cheapest on the list, was of outstanding quality. My only criticism would be that, even by London standards it is not cheap,... More

Staying in Trafalgar Square / Embankment

Neighborhood Profile
Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.
