Exciting food

Our first time at this or any other Japanese restaurant and the staff were all very helpful with sorting out the menu. We went for the a la carte menu and thoroughly enjoyed it, the highlight being the eel which was exceptional. The fish is all fresh which meant that some dishes were not available... read more

The prices of this restaurant are awful shocking! Definitely wouldn't be difficult to find a better quality and affordable Japanese place to eat. I had very high expectations. While food was tasty the service was poor but it was the prices that were by far a real joke. Have fun when asking for the bill ohh la la..

The food was good and tasty for sure, but that is where it ended. The service was mediocre at best, nowhere as compared to our other high end dinning experiences in London that week. But also the most expensive for our meals for the trip. Overall I would rate it below average. I feel it does not do justice to... More

We visited for lunch in early December and had intended having the chef's menu (for which we will definitely return) but a time restriction meant we were unfortunately unable to do so and had the bento option instead. It was excellent and, at £35, exceptional value for money in a two star restaurant.

We had been so excited to visit this restaurant so maybe the expectations were too high - but is is starred after all! The only thing that was lively was the sushi but then again it is the same quality fish as in every other high end Japanese, so why is it so much more expensive? The mains were tasteless... More

We had dinner with some friends. The food was great, very tasteful, if not superb with sometimes flavours you would not expect. We had the menu and we loved every course of it, from starter to dessert. .Umu lifts Japanees food to an extraordinary level. Sure it is expensive, count 380 euro a person all in, but it is worth... Having tried Nobu, we thought we would give a chance to Umu. The food was nice enough but it lacked variety and so, out of 9 dishes on the tasting menu, you end up eating things which pretty much all taste the same. How many times can you have Yuzu and Daikon in a meal? Those dishes which tasted different... More

Just returned from a fabulous dinner at Umu. My wife and I had the tasting menu which was a great way to sample the talents of the chef. It was pricey, but not out of line with other Michelin two stars. The standouts were the squid, the sashimi, the turnip soup and dessert. Th service was warm and friendly. The... More

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
