Dickens knew a good hang out when he found it. The atmosphere was just what person looks for in his local. the beer was plentiful, the food was classic pub and very good.

Small English charm with great English history A little pub tucked out of the way but for fans of Dickens , this is must. Plenty of beers and the food menu is up to pan standard

This place is tucked away but what a very busy pub. Met friends here and was going to eat but sadly they didn't have a spare table which was a shame as the place we ate in was not good. Staff chatty and friendly. Will...try to eat here another time.More

We went to this pub, because my wife found it in a list of historical pub in London. From the outside is very caracteristic. The inside was crowded and we went upstairs to have dinner. We were seven persons and the staff worked quite hard...to seat us. We were seated rapidly and in a very comfortable table. The dinner was fantastic. I suggested pies to my friends and they were enthusiastic with the beef pie. My ten years son was delighted by the shepard pie. I tried a fantastic fish pie. The price was reasonable and the staff was very kind with us (we are italian and they helped us in interpreting the menu, they suggested us good beer and always were ready when asked for something)More

Visited twice during our short London stay, both times just for drinks - a great place to get out of the cold and rain - warm fire available! The service is friendly and efficient. The selection of beers, wines and spirits is excellent. The place...has great character. A real drinkers pub. Seated eating area upstirs whihc we didn't see or use. Will return!More

This would have been a 5 star review had the restaurant staff not been so rude to my 3 teenage daughters. We are over from Ireland for several days to meet with friends to celebrate my husbands 50th. We met with friends at 6 for...drinks downstairs. Our daughters aged 14, 16 & almost 19 arrived at 7.45 and waited at the reserved table upstairs for us to join them at 8. My 2 youngest daughters drank water all evening as they usually do. We ordered a drink for the eldest and provided passport ID to prove her age (her international student age card had been refused) The waitress was incredibly rude to the girls repeatedly saying that she wasn’t serving the young girls drinks even though they hadn’t even requested an alcoholic drink. Her manner was really impatient and condescending to them. When I went to the counter to pay I was told that my younger 2 had been ordering drinks which was untrue. There was a disapproving tone which put a huge dampener on what was a simple evening of introducing our girls to some of their Dad’s old school and college friends! I very rarely don’t tip for service but on this occasion it certainly wasn’t merited! Lovely bar and food was good.More

Anywhere in London on a Saturday Eve is going to be busy, however 6pm or even earlier might be ok. I suggest booking if possible and if you can't get in, there are loads of other pubs and restaurants in the area.
