Once again we attended a performance of a Shakespeare play, this time 'As you like it', as part of 'Shakespeare in the Garden'. Plays performed as the bard would have known and liked. We booked a table early so as to have food at a leisurely pace early, The food, as usual, was of the highest standard, well presented and at a very reasonable price. The staff were some of the friendliest and efficient that you could ever wish to meet. As a real ale drinker I was pleased that the range and condition of the beers was exemplary! Angus and Claire, as usual, had worked very hard to make sure that all of the attendees had the best possible experience. Small details like the availability of blankets for those that felt the cold and disposable ponchos for use in the the event of rain were indicators of the attention to detail that this couple go to! The performance itself was up to the usual standard. These young actors put everything into their performance. If you think the bards' work a little highbrow, book yourself in to next ears play and see Shakespeare as it is meant to be played!

I have known this lovely pub for several years. The management team is stable, the staff are friendly and competent, the beer is always kept very well, and the food, produced by a proper chef, is far better than average. On a cold February evening I celebrated my birthday there with 40-50 friends. Angus and Claire gave me the back of the beautiful main room as requested and provided a very good buffet and great service I write this review prompted by so many of my guests saying that they had a very enjoyable evening, and those new to the Red Lion would love to come again.

Went there with a party of 12 for friends who moved into the area for dinner. Parked in their car park. Dinner was fine, service was pretty good too even though pub was rammed. We had a fun evening but didn't notice they have a registration system for car-parking and got a PCN/ticket. We did resolve this with the pub who sadly have issues with people parking in their car-park and not visiting the pub. Sad they have to do this... but can't blame them. Food was very good , ambience was warm and friendly and we all had a fine time. Happy to recommend, just remember to register your car at the bar.

My family are regular customers, more diners than drinkers. I have been with them on numerous occasions and actually enjoy the food too, the roast dinner is tasty. However, over my last few times there, I feel that the veg portion of the dinner is really inadequate for the price you are paying. We always have to order extra potatoes (maybe our appetites are bigger than most) but it bumps up the cost of what is already pretty high. My previous visit i asked for some more cauliflower on my plate as what I had was a little bit of cheese sauce with not even a floret of cauliflower but a tiny piece broken off piece of one. I got this in a pot and was charged £4.50 which was in my view excessively priced and actually shouldn't have needed to be asked for if you had a decent sized floret on your plate in the first place. Last night I did ask the staff if I could have a bit of extra veg on my plate and you did accommodate by giving me a separate pot of shredded cabbage with some peas in it, thank you. Thankfully, I did have the foresight to ask, as had I not, I believe the portion is about a tablespoon of cabbage n peas, one carrot, a tablespoon of swede, essence of cauliflower cheese, again no cauliflower in it, just crumbs, and the beef had a large ring of fat around it which by the time it was removed made it a small piece of meat. All in all not great for £22. Veg is not that expensive and although I get everyone needs to make a profit, I feel that you are cutting too many corners on the portion size of veg. But on the plus side it does taste lovely and the staff and pub are a great. Just not sure I will be joining the rest of my family for roasts anymore. Tina

Dear Tina, Our Sunday lunch is served with six different vegetables: cauliflower cheese, carrot and swede mash, rosemary and thyme whole roasted carrot, buttered cabbage and pea medley as well as roast potatoes, giant home made Yorkshire pudding and a huge jug of gravy. I am sorry if the quantities served, were not quite right for you. Please be assured that your feedback is truly appreciated as it helps us improve continuously and provide even better experiences in the future. Next time you visit, please reach out to one of the management team and we will oversee your visit personally. Best wishes Claire

Red Lion is a favourite of mine for food. Sadly when visited on Sunday the service wasn't good had to ask to order had dinner delivered before starter plates removed. The waitress sullen no way as good as the usual waiters we have always seen. When we asked for gravy she didn't return with it, she walked past frequently but didn't ask once if all ok. Had to ask one of the male waiters for the bill, didn't want to stay any longer for dessert 😕 had to say this as service has always top notch hope we never get that waitress again.

Dear Nick, We are sorry that you did not receive the first-class service, usually associated with the pub. It was your server's first shift, and without making excuses, she was nervous and I guess everyone is entitled to make a mistake or two on their first day. Everyone has to start somewhere. There were two managers on duty, and should you have asked, one of them would have willingly fetched you a giant jug of gravy. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes Claire

Visited yesterday for a late lunch before travelling back to our home in Wales. We were in Barnes to visit family for the first time since lockdown eased. Sorry to say that I ordered fries with a salad as I didn’t want anything heavy before the long journey home .What arrived was terrible- in the main tiny scraps of potato that a fish shop would struggle to GIVE away .I didn’t say anything as I didn’t want to spoil the occasion but when bringing a long waited for second round of drinks the waitress dropped the tray and spilled them over my husband and son as well as herself . Now I understand accidents happen but she walked away to sort herself out and left us to it !!! When we asked to see the manager she didn’t seem very concerned but offered to take the drinks off the bill - the ones that had been spilled lol She did then only charge for one Diet Coke though .However this did not in any way make up for the embarrassment my teenage son felt having one half of his t shirt wet nor the discomfort of travelling home in wet clothes. The tent erected in ,what was a lovely outdoor space has the atmosphere of a carnival beer tent .The Red Lion have overstretches themselves the service was very slow -very inattentive and the food was shockingly poor. Very very disappointed!!!!!

I am sorry to read this. The team member was incredibly embarrassed and sorry when the drinks spilt as it doesn't happen often but we thought we had put it right by cleaning up, looking after you and giving you a fresh tray of drinks on the house. I'm sorry if this wasn't the case. We always strive to do the right thing. Best wishes Claire

Situated at a busy crossroads in the centre of Barnes this is a traditional London pub. There is plenty of parking round the back. The interior is spacious and not particularly intimate. You can drink or eat and there is quite an extensive menu, both bar snacks and full meal. I had Crispy Squid in a roll. Spicy and unusual although a little too much oil on the bread. Others in the party were very pleased with their meal and we will return.

I needed to organise a lunch for a small gathering of between 12 and 20 people to celebrate and remember the life of an elderly friend and relative that had passed away. I had been let down by another venue that claimed to have not received my booking, when I called to confirm, and further stipulated that they needed 10 days to organise food and staff for a lunchtime meal mid week, and that the 8 days in advance when I called was insufficient. I then called the Red Lion, they were amazing, friendly, helpful and accommodating. A beautiful private room was set up for us in advance, with table laid and drinks ready for arrival of guests. The food and service was outstanding. They even catered for special dietary needs with ease! Such a lovely atmosphere and very good value too. Not to mention that they have a handy carpark at the rear, which for our out of town guests was a big plus. Thank you all at The Red Lion for saving the day!

I am writing this because sadly my request for a booking was rejected because the tables outside are for adults only. Families have to use the grassed area on a first come first served basis. We had a very good family lunch for my birthday two years ago and wanted to repeat the experience. I wanted to book one of the cabins in the paved area but because our party was 6 adults and 2 children this was not possible. Obviously I was not going to risk coming for lunch on a Saturday without a booking. What a shame that families are not welcome.

Dear Kate, We find your review completely unfair and unjust considering that you have not actually visited the venue on this occasion. Coupled with the fact that we have replied promptly to both of your previous emails , phone calls AND offered you a choice of two tables.... - just not the one you demanded. The two tables offered were in the beautiful restaurant and one in the garden. Therefore, we provided two perfectly good, alternative family friendly options! We are family friendly but we also offer space for adults too - so that grown-ups too can enjoy a quiet G and T or Aperol Spritz in a pub setting. I am sure the adults in the party can appreciate this. Thank you for letting us know that your other actual visit was very good. It is a shame you have not taken us up on our offer so that you could have repeated this experience from two years ago. Best wishes Claire & The Red Lion team

This is a very nice pub, staff was pleasant and atmosphere was great, pop in for a drink and you will have a good time but the food was terrible. I had the Falafel which was suppose to have Siracha sauce and tahini dressing, I could not taste it all I tasted was grease, the falafel was deep fried but not placed on a kitchen towel to let dry a little. The thrice cooked chips were not what I would label them, they were pre-paged Fries that anyone could get at Iceland, cooking them 3 times just made them greaser. My companions had the crispy squid roll which was greasy and the club sandwich the club was ok but had boiled egg in the sandwich which was an odd choice. The main are all £15-£27 if they can not get the sandwiches right why pay that much for a main.

Dear David, Thank you for this valuable feedback- all feedback is incredibly important to us and only helps us improve on what we do best. Would like to point out that we had a 'technical chip hitch' for a few days during this week so we had to use frozen fries for a few days. Normal service has since resumed and our fresh chips are back on the menu as they have been for the past 18 years. Thank you for your understanding. The only other thing I would mention is that I find it such a shame that your concerns could not have been put right in house. Considering the amount of time we spent at your table and with several team members engaging with you (talking through what was in the club sandwich in particular and explaining why egg was a classic etc), I would have hoped that we could have had the opportunity to discuss it then. It is our main goal that every customer leaves happy and given the chance we could made sure that you were happy too! Best wishes Claire

We have lunch at the Red Lion on a regular basis and the food and the service are consistently excellent. Yesterday was no exception. We were sitting near the kitchen and could see how busy they were and yet still we didn't have to wait long for our food. No matter what the pressure the staff are always friendly and helpful. There's brilliant co-operation between the team to ensure everything runs smoothly - all credit to the landlord/lady who are often around and pulling their weight. I don't think I've had a bad meal there since they took over. I've been meaning to post a review for ages - we've been rather taking this local gem for granted which was brought home when it closed for a few days for renovation.

Went for dinner last week with my girlfriend. Looking for a local as new to the area. The red lion won’t be it. My fish and chips was small and the fish tasted like it was from frozen and my partners burger was again small and over cooked. Might have been forgiven but the prices are ridiculous. 17.50 for a tiny burger and a few chips? Ridiculous. Our pints were also over 7 quid which for outside central london is absurd. The servers looked like they didn’t want to be there. Disappointing.

Once again we repaired to the Red Lion for a Shakespeare tin the Garden event. We started the evening with a meal and drinks; the new menu was a lovely surprise and the food as delicious as ever. The staff here always make you feel very welcome and are most attentive. The youngsters performing 'A Comedy of Errors' gave their all to an appreciative crowd. If you haven't seen one of these performances, do try to see one next year; you will not be disappointed! I have used the Red Lion for many years and can honestly say that the experience gets better every time! The food keeps on improving, and, the beers on tap are second to none. My wife and I have decided to come here more often even though it is tricky to get here from where we live. Highly recommended, go on spoil yourself!

After a dreadful experience at the Blue Boat we visited the Red Lion to enquire about Sunday Lunch. It was packed. Full. Busy. We were offered a table immediately by a very professional greeter (Manager?). We had a lovely roast and Rioja and our dog had a cow's ear (provided by us!). Great service and food. Thanks.
