Location and contact

Your mother's mantra of "eat your vegetables" probably never brought to mind dishes quite like this. Vanilla Black restaurant, originally from York but now located in the City of London near Chancery Lane, smashes the stereotype of bland, lentil-laden hippie dishes. Instead, Vanilla Black takes a modern, imaginative and ambitious approach to vegetarian cuisine. Result? It is the only vegetarian restaurant in London that's recommended in the Michelin Guide. At Vanilla Black, it's not "vegetarian cooking", it's "vegetable cuisine". The dining areas are spacious and done with art deco-esque flair, Vanilla Black's cool and comfortable dining room sets the stage for its innovative cuisine. Dishes

The restaurant was in a good location. I enjoyed my first course. Unfortunately, my main course included some pieces of courgette which were burnt. Otherwise, the dish was dull. However, I was concerned about my daughter's food: both her starter and main course were very...More

I have been a veggie for 40 years and have never had such an amazing gourmet meal ever! Blown away by the creativity of every dish, the selection of wine with each course and the wonderful friendly staff. My son treated me to the 5...More

My lovely nephew took me here a couple of weeks ago for an early dinner on Saturday night. Everything was so tasty and the presentation was wonderful. So many tempting vegetarian dishes to choose from makes such a refreshing change. My sense of adventure however...More

I was really impressed with this restaurant. The staff was very friendly and we had a waitress that looked after our table. She was lovely. I asked her to recommend us some dishes and she gave us some great advice. We started off with the...More

We were celebrating a graduation over a dinner. We enjoyed a mix of foods, which were tasty and very nicely laid out (see pics) and served. For full menu and wine we paid about 50-60£ each, which I considered well worth it. I highly recommend...More

£260 for 5 people with 2/3 courses and no alcohol. Nice decor, cosy atmosphere, food disappointing. We appreciated the effort with the quirkiness of the food, however our standards were never fully realised. Mushroom pate is enticing at first, but don’t be fooled by charming...More

Quaint decor. Good service. We had the 5 course vegetarian tasting menu. The first two courses were decent. Good presentation and tasted innovative. The third course was incredibly egg-y and made me nauseous. The fourth course was even worse. Bread and whatever bland brown sauce...More

Overall I was disappointed, there were some interesting flavours and the food looked good, but the portions were very small, and in the end the quality did not make up for the lack of quantity. That make me sound like a big eater, but I'm...More

I ate here tonight with a friend having found it by chance while looking for a vegetarian restaurant to go to after day out. I'm so glad I discovered this because we both loved our meals. Really interesting unusual menu. So different to the usual...More
