Alas, the Square we loved is no longer. The new chef has settled in and is emphasizing quirky, strange and "innovative" flavor combos over deliciousness. Service is friendly but largely inept. Our dinner was exorbitantly priced relative to value. Dinner was filled with almost uneatable flavor combos and a surfeit of foam or gel textures. So disappointed. Its hard to... More

When I pay just over £150 per person (without wine), I want to be wowed. I was not. My starter risotto was very good, my friends' main course risotto was soggy and without much flavour. My main course fallow deer lacked a deeper kind of flavour; all the in-between servings, including the amuse bouche, were curiously under-flavoured; indeed, that seemed... More

I have been an early fan of The Square remember when it opened applauded the chef (who has since left) and the food was Very very good. Michelin guide must be asleep at the wheel for The Square to have 2 stars. The food was good, (not very good) but not 2 star quality which should be exceptional. As an... More

A wonderful menu with service to match. The whole team were very attentive and each course was explained upon serving. The amuse and fun courses were great and perfect. The wine list was extensive and well priced for London. I will definitely return to this restaurant and take others. The manner in which it was run was awesome. Great team... More

Our daughter has been here before and bought us Gift Vouchers as she was sure we would enjoy the experience and she was right. We do not go up to London that often nowadays but had an appointment elsewhere so decided to have lunch at the restaurant. We both decided to have the lunchtime Tasting Menu and the food was... I would say that I really enjoyed my evening at The Square. The menu is a bit pricey with minimum £115 per person. I am not an expert and struggle to say wheter it is worth the money, but the dishes were deffinetelly complicated and offten difficult to acknowledge. However what deffinetly surprised me is the Asian tone that was... More

Discreet restaurant run like clockwork. Had a set menu at lunchtime. Attention to detail and service incredible. Each course was explained and presented wonderfully. Diners were mainly business people. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting something special and wanting to be pampered.

Visited for a birthday treat. Went a la carte rather than tasting menu. All of the dishes were very good and service was excellent as you would expect but it simply didn't have the wow factor as we expected for a £400 meal. Maybe it was the restaurant which is VERY quiet and serious. Espresso martinis were out of this... More

My son and I enjoyed a delightful meal here earlier today. I cannot fault any part of our experience. The ambience, the staff, the quality of the service the theatricality of the food presentation and of course eating the food. I do not agree with any of the criticisms of other reviewers. I expect it will gain a star or... More

Description
The Square restaurant in London's ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square's wine list (wine bible, really) runs to 80 pages of the world's finest.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
