Went to The Square last week with high expectations as it was given 2 Stars. Was quite surprised to find the food, presentation and service not typical of a 2-Star restaurant. Found out later that there was a change of ownership and management. Overall, food was good, but not "worth a detour"!

One of our favourite restaurants and the first time we had visited since the change in ownership. Everything was amazing as per usual and reassuringly there was no sign of change... with one exception - the soufflé, normally so large and impressive, was tiny. Less than half the size of the normal soufflé. It was still delicious though.

This was our first visit since the change of ownership and we were a bit nervous about what we would find. We have been regular visitors to the Square for over 5 years and knew many of the staff. On this visit there was not one familiar face, we especially missed sommelier Mohammed ( for those interested he is now... More

We visited for lunch on a Saturday. Tables were well spaced out, but probably due to being a lunch time it was less than half full, hence it lacked a bit of atmosphere. We opted for the set lunch menu, which represents good value at £42 for 3 courses. This offers a choice of 2 items for each course. Our... More

The Square could be easily rated as one of the five best restaurants in the world. Unquestionable freshness and unmatched presentation of dishes can only be challenged by the desserts

The service was good (not stunning). But the food was poor. Two of us ate, one was vegetarian. The plates were unbalanced at best and bland mush at the worst. Salty, salty, salty! Individual elements were nice but anybody can buy a nice cheese and stick it on a plate! As an example - the souffle smelt wonderful but tasted... More

There had been some problems with a reservation earlier in the year so, with the help of the restaurant manager, we had rescheduled our lunch for August to celebrate a birthday. There is nothing I can write down in this review that will fully convey how good our lunch was two to three weeks ago. The service was impeccable, attentive... More

This Mayfair standard has maintained its freshness and quality. The service is perfect - attentive but not fawning or pretentious. An excellent wine selection adds to the enjoyment. Consider substituting cheese for dessert as the cart contains choices where you can try something new or explore.

I was taken to The Square as a birthday treat. As you can imagine it was very fancy and we were well treated by the staff. The only downside on that point was that my napkin was taken away when I went to the (very nice) loo and I wasn't given another one. I should have asked for another one,... More

I have been meaning to write a review since my husband and I ate here almost a year ago... While it is a bit late now, I could not let that excellent experience slide unnoticed! We actually just walked in one evening, by mistake, hungry. It was a little weird at first: bright lights and no music... But we got... More

Description
The Square restaurant in London's ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square's wine list (wine bible, really) runs to 80 pages of the world's finest.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighborhood Profile
Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
