We got there late on a Friday (our 1st night in London) and although the waitress informed us they were out of a few dishes, they happily seated us only a few minutes before the kitchen was closing. The entire staff couldn’t have been nicer and were super friendly and accommodating of a picky eater. The food was also very delicious, so an all around great find. We went back a couple of times and it was always lovely!

Impressive from the outside with stunning huge etched glass bay windows and original Victorian tiles on the walls of the entrance, The Prince Alfred welcomes you into the bar area with a large selection of spirits and lagers/foreign beers. There are gothic style wooden elements, maybe original, and smaller snugs for more private imbibing.
A small selection of pale ales but nothing to suit the lover of craft ales.
The Formosa dining rooms is connected to the rear of the pub and offers a high class menu of well proportioned dishes.
Service is prompt and polite. Does get busy, even during mid-week so be warned! Family dining is popular with children in tow, so if you want a quiet meal then maybe this isn’t the place.
Lovely Art Deco artwork is displayed on the walls and the vaulted glass ceiling makes for a bright dining area.
However, in the 29 degree heat - our dining experience was a sticky, sweltering one. Air-conditioning would have made for a better experience and we would have stayed for more drinks but we were just too uncomfortable in there. For such a large dining area, 3 windows open on the back wall is not enough ventilation/heat release.

Dear Michaellat,
Thank you for the amazing 4-star review.
We are pleased to hear that you loved our Victorian Pub and dining area.
We always try our best to give excellent service and let our customers feel comfortable,
I can't explain how sorry I feel to hear about your experience in the dining area, but unfortunately during that days we had a problem with our AC that couldn't be fixed earlier.
We hope to see you again soon for a more enjoyable stay,
Kind Regards,

Had one of the best Sunday roast I have had in a London pub. Normally this fact alone would want me leaving a review, however my partner and I were treated to a magic show as well. The waiter named Marius not only hosted us but provided us with a magic show whilst we waited for our meal to come out. After being throughly entertained we received a delicious pork and beef roast. We had to try the deserts, not the best for the waist line but the taste buds very much appreciated the flavour sensation.

Not great.
First they deliver a quinoa and chickpeas salad without the quinoa and chickpeas. The rather load chef blames the poor waiter although he could have gotten it wrong eludes me.
I then thought I had been transported into the worst Ramsey’s Kitchen nightmare as the string of obscene language and four letter expletives from the lady chef was quite embarrassing.
We complained to the waiter about the language to be told that many people had complained before and he was very embarrassed.
If people had complained previously why the hell was this not sorted out it is totally unacceptable to sit having a nice meal and have to listen to the foulest language coming from behind the bar and kitchen.
In the end the food was okay not brilliant but okay but the experience was spoiled totally by the behaviour of this female chef.
Sort it out.

A favourite locals for having drinks. Upon reading some reviews decided to treat my mum for late Sunday lunch/dinner there for the first time. There was no such thing as walk in seating available (should have left then) but got told there was seating in the cellar, we went downstairs but it wasn't great (should've left there too) I went back upstairs and asked if there was any way we could get an upstairs table, I got told if I could get a table at the bar area we could eat there. So with newfound hope I went to get mum and found a table excited for our meal that looked fantastic on the pass.
Ordered us drinks at the bar, got her a pork roast and I had the beef. Waited 45 minutes for our meal to arrive (should've asked for a refund of my ÂŁ40 and really annoyed i didn't leave there). It arrived cold. My beef looked like it was the saddest thing on the planet not to mention the half cooked carrot which just seemed to have been put there as some bizarre afterthought covered some cabbage looking stuff which didn't taste too bad (think I was just hungry) covered by a huge Yorkshire pudding. My mum ate 3 mouthfuls and couldn't eat anymore. At this very disappointing moment I thought we would cheer her up with some dessert.. when I approached the bar I waited again for 15 minutes before I got told by the staff the kitchen was quite busy and we would wait 30 - 45 minutes to order anything. I asked if it would it would apply to ordering dessert which I got told no. So with renewed happiness I told my mum she could order anything on the dessert menu. She ordered the brioch with some caramel sauce. It arrived rather quickly, much to my already disappointing meal experience this topped it. It was hard around the edges, and tasted like a microwave dessert. At this disappointing moment, I asked for a takeaway box, put all the leftovers in there with the intention of creating some culinary magic at home with it, but it just found its way into my bin.

It was a very good experience for one of the most historic and charming pubs in London. Marius was our host and server, and whilst the dining room was very busy and under-staffed, he made sure we were well taken care of.
The menu isn’t brain surgery or fancy, but everything you would expect for a good traditional pub. We ordered a hamburger and fish & chips, and it was prepared at a very high standard. It was also Sunday Roast day and the generous platters of options waking by to our neighbouring tables looked tempting and amazing.
Also if you get Marius as a server, he is also a magician, so be sure to ask him to do a few tricks. ;)

Getting out of the house with two young kids is never easy, so it has to be worth while. We're very happy we choose Prince Alfred's with their wide selection of beers and an outstanding Sunday Roast. The best part was having Marius as our waiter though. We had a great three course meal over three hours that was filled with laughs as Marius shared his gift for slight of hand with us. I really haven't laughed so hard in a long time and his great personality really shown through while he performed.

We went for a walk in with 6 of us and they fitted us in beautifully. The meal tasted brilliant and we had multiple gravy refills and the service was perfect! Our main waiter was Marius who made us all feel welcome and even provided some entertainment with a magic show. The evening will be remembered as a wonderful Christmas dinner with friends!

Jared and the whole team at the Prince Alfred did a fantastic job accommodating our team Xmas dinner for 16 people. We started with drinks in one of the private booths in the pub, and then sat all together at one long table in the dining room - all perfect. Food was delicious, reasonably priced and service was warm and welcoming. The Price Alfred was far more flexible and friendly with regard the pre-booking / deadlines / deposit - compared with many other restaurants I have dealt with for large groups. All my guest left feeling very jolly, which is exactly what I hoped for. Thank you to the whole team, highly recommend!

Really warm welcome, nice atmosphere and lovely spot by fire for Sunday lunch. But alas not a great food experience - and with other competition locally, probably won't return.
1. Nearly an hour to get served. Fair enough as its Sunday lunchtime but another time, perhaps we wouldn't have waited that long.
2. I am not a fussy eater but the gray was very watery and my partner had a load of bones in her Fish & Chips. We told the waiter who said there shouldn't be and he could only see it on one side of the fish. He told her to eat a bit more. She couldn't be bothered after finding a few more. We were kindly offered a free dessert at the end (which was appreciated) but just decided to go opposite for a cake and coffee.

We normally have a really good time at this pub. The staff are excellent and the food is also well cooked and presented. We had been before for Sunday lunch but at night and it was excellent. Unfortunately we went at lunchtime on Sunday. The place was packed. We sat down, water was brought over and there we sat…….no menus were given. The person who I suppose was meant to give us our me u was too busy entertaining a group of kids at a table. No other staff member came over. Eventually I got up and put my coat on. This had the desired effect…no sorry you were kept waiting. We ordered our meal and two glasses of wine……that was an effort for the gentleman to understand what wine we wanted. We didn’t have a starter but just the Sunday lunch. We then waited and waited and waited. Ok there was a bog party next to us but have the courtesy to come over and say sorry but there is a bit if a wait….so we sat waiting more and eventually our lunch was served.

5* All round. Service was excellent. Staff were helpful, recommended a great wine, gave us a fab table at short notice, went above and beyond and food was tasty and came quickly.
Our waiter Marius was a magician and entertained us throughout our meal. He made our day :)
We will be back. Thank you for the lovely evening and service.

We enjoyed a lovely Sunday roast at this charming pub. It has lovely original features but the dining room has a conservatory style roof that gives it a light, airy feel whilst remaining cosy.
The food was very good quality and whilst there was a fairly long wait it wasn’t unreasonable for a busy Sunday. It was worth the wait! We didn’t have room for desserts so hope to go back and try them.
It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere which is contributed to by the friendly, helpful staff.

I’ve been a few times now, usually mid-afternoon and have enjoyed the quality of the pub food. The last time I had fish and chips and the lemon posset which were all excellent and the time before the burger. They serve a mean Bloody Mary (prepared by Eva) and the overall service from Max, Eva and Hugo the last time I was there was excellent. The value of a friendly and flexible approach to customers can not be underestimated. Finally, a shout-out to Nikita in the kitchen (I asked the server who had prepared the food).

I've been a few times at this pub for Sunday roast, and every single time I end up having a great meal, of the highest quality ingredients for the value. The vegetarian Sunday Roast is very filling and tasty.
Great atmosphere, stunning venue with a huge window wall which is a piece of art. Service by Hugo and Callum, who usually attend me upon arrival, is always spot on, making the time there a superb experience. Can't wait to go back
