I must say I am not a big fan of pubs or food served in most pubs or British cuisine in general. So I went here on a business lunch invitation. Despite the odd choice, it was perfect because the 5 of us were seated on a isolated corner which gave us a lot of privacy and a welcome sense... More

Food average for the price. Wasn't terrible but we expected more after the hype. I wouldn't recommend it. No heating in the restaurant either, so the whole meal was spent in the chill. Won't be going back!

I am not sure what they did to my Venison Wellington but it was grey, spongey and encased in soggy pastry. Perhaps it was boiled ? My brother's steak was tiny, thin and gristly. The waiter tried to pass it off as fat but this was a steak in name only. It should not have been served. If you want... More

Came here for a girls catch up. We were so busy talking we took ages to order but the staff were so attentive and nice. The food was great, steak was gorgeous! Not cheap but worth the money. Would definitely recommend.

Spitalfields market's charm and attraction is the hustle and bustle and variety of foods available to purchase. But if you need a short, peaceful break, head across the road for refreshments at the English Restaurant. It looks like a traditional pub from the outside but it is far from it. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food... More

Good English food. Believe it or not, disbelievers, there is such a thing! The Venison Wellington was second to none. Service was refreshingly casual (not false) or in other words, it was authentically English. The atmosphere was superb in the function room with a real fire burning away..... in the City! Very enjoyable, I will return.

We recently visited with a dozen of friends for a Christmas lunch. Got a private room which was nice. The staff were friendly and helpful. It's the food that did not make it for many of us. To speak for myself - chestnut and mushroom soup - weird watery, tasteless coagulation of ingredients, had to return it, which I nearly... More

The English Restaurant is situated in an historic, 18th-century town house opposite the Spitalfields market. Now a busy area for food, it is lucky to have the English Restaurant here because it is one of the best in the city. The décor looks as if it hasn't changed in 300 years and that produces a marvellous atmosphere in which to... More

Our visit was Ok and meal and service generally OK. We asked for a spilt bill and received two receipts. It was only when we looked at the receipts later that staff had kindly entered a tip on each bill at £2.50 without our permission. Come to think of it they took our cards and used the contact facility on... More

We visited in a large group on a Saturday evening. We managed to score a last minute booking and when we arrived we found a good table squeezed into a busy restaurant. Considering the location, so central, it had a remarkably low noise level which my hard-of-hearing father benefited from, although it was doing a good turn over. The restaurant... More

Staying in Spitalfields

Neighborhood Profile
Spitalfields
For a glimpse of Georgian and Victorian London at its most pristine, or a peek into what's apt to be the next big global trend, the hipster zone of Spitalfields can provide hours of amazement. Around the clock, this is a haven for early morning bargain hunters sizing up its street markets, foodie foragers throughout the day, or late night revelers hitting some of London's most popular bars and clubs.

Wedged between the business-minded City of London, expressly trendy Shoreditch, and zestful Whitechapel, the lines between traditional and contemporary beautifully blur in this historic East End nexus.
