The Dove Bistro looks very inviting with a rustic interior that was welcoming on a late summer evening. The menu promises classic English dishes such as steak and ale pie and fish and chips, great if you want no nonsense food. However the quality of the dishes we tried were all a real let down - grisly meat in the... More

My wife looked at the menu and decided it was not busy as there was only two people eating I asked this dour looking character at the bar if he could place us he looked around the near empty restaurant and said had we booked,we thought we where in Ronnie Barkers sketch with rook soup, We where placed at a... Having dined in the Dove previously we, foolishly it now seems, took a £20 taxi ride to renew our experience. It was ten past eight, the doors were open and the Bistro empty. As we walked in I saw the surly look on one of the two waiters faces as he promptly turned his back on us. It is my... More

We began visiting Grasmere four years ago and the small Dove bar and restaurant was instrumental in our falling in love with the place. The wonderful quaint bar was a retreat in all weathers with good ales, log fire, great atmosphere and food to match, it was perfect. We have visited Grasmere at least once each year since and always... More

We regularly eat in Grasmere or Ambleside and decided to go here for a family birthday get together. We booked a table for 9 of us. Service - Bad, rude service, we were told by our waiter we had to order after asking for an extra 5 minutes to make a decision as we had a time slot in the... More

Visited Grasmere and decided to lunch here as we had previously stayed at the hotel and the food had been excellent. Wine was perfect but, no matter how much salt and pepper we added, there was no discernible flavour to the butternut squash soup. It was possibly delicious on its first outing but it had been watered down so much... More

Dined on a Sunday evening and my wife chose Sea Trout ( Brown Trout) but it was pink through and through and tasted of salmon pellet fodder from a trout farm and given my wife does not like salmon was a bit of a let down

Food was hit and miss. The portobello mushroom starter was not portobello and the sourdough bread with the soup was Granary. When we questioned this the waitress' English wasn't good enough to be able to understand. There are only 3 red wines on the menu yet they'd run out of the one we wanted. That said, the goat's cheese tart... More

...it's like having dinner in a garden centre café. With such a great menu, I can't understand why the dining room isn't decorated and set out like a restaurant. Having said that, I'm not sure how anyone could have anything else to say against the Dove. The food is just great and I've always found the service to be spot... More
