We stayed over in the Macdonald Swan Hotel and didn't check reviews before making our way to the bar for our evening meal and a drink. Two large glasses of red Rioja wine cost £21.00. How can they charge £10.50 per glass? No warning from the bar staff or advice on buying a bottle etc..and no prices written up on... More

Went in for a drink what a rip off. £7.60 for 2 bottles of small beers. There's a lot more places in Grasmere to have a drink will not be coming back here again. I don't understand how you can charge that amount you get a case of these from the local Coop

Limited stock, no Drambuie for instance. Prices not obvious, charging to room does not give a receipt of a price unless challenged.

Although we'd driven past many times, this was our first visit. We ate in the bar since the restaurant was fully booked and it was, in any event, the same menu. The pretend coal fire was on far too high and we, together with several neighbouring diners, struggled with the heat. We ordered a chicken and a lamb main course,... More

We booked Sunday lunch here and were quite disappointed overall. The service needed a wake up call, had to request salt and pepper, condiments, ice for the water jug. We had the roast beef which was very over cooked and I made the exciting discovery of a piece of string still in the meat! !! Felt it to be overpriced... More

We spent our first night of our holiday in here as the hotel's restaurant was full which seems to be the hotel's policy. The food was as good as the hotel produces, nothing more nothing less. Bar prices were high and a simple two course meal for two cost £80 (including an average bottle of white wine). I wouldn't visit... More

I first visited this place 40 years ago, and since then it has been absorbed into the Macdonald empire, and it's tried to move upmarket, and in the process, it's lost a bit of it's unique charm. That said, the service was good, drinks were good, and the goat cheese salad was outstanding. I wouldn't drive 50 miles to eat... More

Stopped in for dinner in the bar area. You order at the bar. I had a pie, my partner had a £25 steak which was terrible, mostly fat. We felt they were trying to be more up market than they actually are. The service seemed disorganised for example receiving our food bedfore cutlury and we were never asked if everything... More

came here everyday during our visit to grasmere, its a perfect spot as its so close to so many walks that when you've finished your walk, you can crash by the fire or the beer garden and sup some of the lovely ales and ciders they have on offer.

We have eaten here on several occasions and recommended it to others - NEVER AGAIN. 4 of us ate last night and what chaos. NOT the fault of barman or waiting on young man. They were trying very hard in challenging circumstances. No Bacardi at bar, or pumpkin ravioli. Most of the food when it arrived was mediocre and pricey... More
