Just returned from Scotland and stayed in Cockermouth overnight on the way home and by chance came across the castle very ordinary from the outside and was not sure but sure glad I did the food was excellent, nice size portions and as a man who likes ale the beer was also of a high standard and a nice touch was... The Castle Bar has a great feel to it and benefits from one of the few beer gardens in Cockermouth. On a sunny day (yes we do have them) there is nothing better than enjoying a pint on the tiered terraces. Good choice of beers and the food is good too. I would recommend a pint of Peroni accompanied by... More

Ignore your first look from the outside this is a lovely pub. Go in and you will be surprised how lovely it is inside. The pub goes back to a further area to sit,eat and drink. At the rear of the pub is a great stepped beer garden which is a sun trap. In the middle of the pub is... More

When entering the front of the building, it looks like a typical pub but there is an upstairs restaurant (with a bar serving it). Meals were quick and of high quality and most were locally sourced, promoting local suppliers within the menu. Staff were really friendly and service was good.

Usually thought of as a decent place to have a meal, this bar can sometimes provide a less than good experience, although I'm not sure why this happens. The menu is the same each time with changes in specialities-these are worth considering because I think more effort is made when preparing these, and the atmosphere is generally welcoming, but lack... ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC Party of 15 for my sons birthday, and from making the reservation to paying the bill we were all made to feel very welcome . The food was exceptional and the service second to none , even with my mistake of missing 1 meal on my pre order and not knowing this until we were all served ,... More

I've been to the castle bar for lunch before and it was good but our meal and service tonight was beyond that. Incredible food and service! Great atmosphere too! I would recommend the sticky toffee pudding, the vanilla custard was to die for!!

Imagine trying to organise an impromptu 60th birthday dinner for 18 people at the drop of a hat in high season in the Lakes. That was my brief and miraculously The Castle Bar, Cockermouth (who had been recommended to me highly) fell over themselves to accommodate us at such short notice. Would it be ok if we had an early... More

Initially, I thought from the outside appearance that it was just 'a pub'. How wrong can you be! Quite simply the best overall restaurant meal I have ever had. Breaded brie wedge - 113 out of 10. Lamb Henry - 146 out of 10 (Never eaten anything so nice in my life) Cheesecake - 76 out of 10. Perfect food... More

We have never had a bad experience at the Castle Bar. The staff are efficient and friendly and the food is always of a high standard. Thank you Shane on this occasion for looking after us. One of our party is gluten free and they accommodated us with ease. Looking forward to our next visit.
