Nice quiet spot in a Saturday lunchtime for a delicious baguette and toastie. Reasonably priced with table service.

Whenever I'm visiting Canterbury I often visit Canteen with my daughter who started going there as a student. The food is simple homemade soups, salads and wraps. Great selection of teas and juices. All reasonably priced designed to fill you up on a tight budget, consequently popular with students (and their mum's)

Had a Groupon Voucher about to finish so popped in for a take-away flat bread. Wasn't expecting much but wow - what a choice!!! There is certainly something for everyone - and it is all freshly prepared. The girls were very busy but produced great quality food, with a smile and an apology for the delay. Flat bread was huge... We had a tasty lunch that was quickly and attractively served. The staff was friendly and helpful. We ate upstairs and looked out the window at other tourists looking in the jeweler's windows across the street. There are larger restaurants, but this was nice for a restful meal or quiet time between sightseeing

Huge choice in the vicinity, glad we chose this one though. Pretty busy, but found a table on the 2nd floor. Whilst there is waitress service, that's only to bring your food to you! You have to go and find a table, choose your food, then drop downstairs to order. Tip order before you go upstairs. Coffee was fine. Daughter... More

Visited yesterday after finding this little place by chance. Sat at lovely table by the window. Lovely young lady cleaned table for us. Lots of choice on menu boards especially good for veggie / vegan choices. I ordered lentil bolognese on jacket potato which came with huge salad too. Really nice. OH ordered Chicken Caesar Salad and though he ordered... More

Had a late lunch here, whilst on a day trip. Had the Indian burrito which was full of flavour and very filling. Good and different range on the menu and excellent value.

Lovely building, seating up two rickety flights of stairs, waitress service to the table. Caesar chicken baguette and a spicy chicken salad (huge....), crisps, scone with jam and cream, pot of tea and a coke, all for under £15. Took a few minutes to arrive indicating everything is freshly prepared. What's not to like. Highly recommended!

the range of choices at canteen are extensive with the option to change everything on the menu to your own specific taste. The price was great for the quality and the staff where more than helpful

Literally the worst sandwich I've had in my entire life. DO NOT order the Bombay chicken, it is utterly flavourless, devoid of all seasoning and spice and served with a limp, impotent, pointless chutney. Ugh!

Management response:

Sorry you did not enjoy our food but as you see from our numerous good reviews many, many customers really enjoy our food, so perhaps it is just not to your taste. We are NOT a fast food chain and therefore at busy times service may be a little slower than you may expect. I will happily refund your money... More

Description
Just three doors to the left of Canterbury Cathedral Gate Canteen serves freshly made flatbreads, salads, baguettes, toasties, jacket potatos and daily hot dish / soup. Everything is made to order from freshly prepared ingredients using local suppliers wherever possible. The building dates back to around 1600 and from the windows you can get glimpses of the Cathedral (particularly from the loo !). It is a rather rickety building so you need to be OK with stairs as our seating is over three floors. We provide eat in or take away food and a large variety of hot and cold drinks including smoothies and juice pressed on the premises. Due to popularity we also now serve delicious cream teas.
