Whether you like the new gastro pub version of the JS or not; my feedback is entirely to do with the attitude of the host (owner?) We arrived at 12.00 on Saturday and were confronted by the above, I asked politely if we could have something to eat (at this point no one else in pub). "Just sandwiches starters, quick... More

I've been using the Sportsman, on and off, for more than 40 years (I remember when the little office inside the front door was the Gents loo). Too many recent disappointing changes. These include an officious/patronising front-of-house manager, loss of both the bar area and my favourite Harvey's beer and increased prices. £9.75 for a glass of Ridgeview fizz -... More

Birthday treat for a friend. Food was exceptional, couldn't fault it. Really good wine list, and some amazing ports on offer. Service really good, not too intrusive but spot on. Could of stayed all day! Will be back soon.

Visited this delightful pub today and we all had the beef which was delicious and presented excellently. The Pate started was superb and my parents wines and my beer was the perfect addition. They do add a 10% service charge which isn't to everyone's agreement but the food is worth it. You can bring your own wine but the corkage... More

Decent beer and reasonable food do not compensate for an interior which is furnishings which have not been cleaned or refreshed in years. Call it chic if you like, or even shabby chic or rustic: the truth is more prosaic - some of the furnishings are filthy and detract greatly from what this place is capable of.

My husband and I went for a meal at the Jolly Sportsman last night. Having read some of the previous reviews I almost cancelled but decided to make my own mind up. We both had a three course meal from the a la carte menu, potted haddock and shrimp and goats cheese beignets starters which arrived quickly and were delicious.... More

Great food pub. 3 course lunch for £18. Tasty, good portions, imaginative without being fussy. Friendly and attentive service. Highly recommended.

Great good, service, ambience. Lovely location at the foot of the downs. Highly recommended. Great idea not to have a 'drinking' bar, and just serious dining. Highly recommended.

We have dined at this Restaurant on numerous occasions and thoroughly enjoyed. Sadly this latest visit disappointed in many respects. We ordered the Scallop risotto to start which was mediocre with little evidnence of any fish. Rib eye steaks arrived Luke warm and whilst they were swiftly re-heated, at £22.50 each not what you expect. Creme brûlée was ok. Service... More

We were invited here by our closest friends to celebrate New Year's eve. The restaurant was warm and cosy with a nice ambience. We enjoyed most of the set menu but I was very disapointed with my vegetarian main (which I had checked beforehand could be catered for). As my fellow diners had pheasant or beef, I was served mushrooms... More
