Saturday night at Gars is busier and noisier than other nights, but the food was as good as usual, and the service excellent. This time we concentrated on fish dishes, the sea bass in particular was delicious. It can get rowdy with big groups, or karaoke, so it you want a quiet meal choose your time carefully. I love the... I have had numerous lunches and dinners here, a family run and very well maintained restaurant in one of Brighton's best locations. The food is Cantonese, the dim sum is great for Brighton only matched by the China Garden, peppered beef simple but excellent but perhaps the best is the duck. A signature. Noodle and rice dishes very authentic, think... More

Additionally a very hard restaurant to criticize as well. To put my point across simply, which I feel given the quality of my experience is highly incumbent upon me, I would say this is a poor example of Chinese restaurant and I would highly recommend avoiding it altogether.

Ok ignore that bit about the Karaoke (for now). We were here for a private dinner for 12/13. Had the downstairs room all to ourselves, with its own bar. Service was really good and there is an excellent menu. I find a lot of Chinese food a bit same-ish, but this was a cut above. Highlight is the lemon chicken... More

Great food and fantastic atmosphere. Just one word of warning, look out for the 10% surcharge on the bill and it is not compulsory but very east to miss. Such a shame they do this.

Planned to go to Gars Chinese in Brighton on Sunday night, Having checked the opening hours on trip advisor and as painted on their window we turned up at 8 last Sunday and were virtually chased out of the door as we were extremely rudely informed that they were closed and we were not welcome. I politely pointed out the... More

Fantastic! We were a hen party of 16 and we were made to feel so welcome. Food was amazing! Katie the barmaid was incredible, she made us laugh and feel completely at ease, couldn't have asked for a better waitress. 10/10

Following Trip Advisor reviews I went to this restaurant but was slightly disappointed. The food was fine but I have been to better Chinese restaurants in Brighton. Service was very quick. Prices are average. There is an online discount for Monday evenings but this was not taken from my bill so had to ask specifically for it which did not... More

Coming from Brighton I've known about Gars for years and I couldn't understand why I had never been. Unfortunately for us Gars turned out to be a massive let down. The meal was well over £100 and was just a bit better than my local Chinese takeaway. To be honest it made me feel a bit ripped off. Safe to... More

Decided to go for real quality and order from Gars the pre-eminent Chinese in Brighton I ordered my usual Quarter Duck, Singapore Noodles, Sweet and Sour Pork, and a chicken dish. The cost was £43 but it is Gars and so I was expecting something really exceptional. My usual excellent takeaway would charge delivered under £20. The delivery via Deliveroo... More

Description
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
