We got our meal through deliveroo. It was awful. Under seasoned, greasy and over cooked. Some of the worst Chinese food I've had the displeasure of eating. At £45 it was so ridiculously overpriced. Go to Sichuan garden on queens road for good authentic Chinese the duck tongues are great.

We visited this well established restaurant for lunch on a a warm summer's day and as a result the place was quiet. Sensible folk would have been enjoying the beach on a day like this. So the food? Very good indeed. One of our party being of Hong Kong descent claimed there were a couple of items on the menu... More

Haven't been to this restaurant in twenty years four of us decided to check it out - won't be returning. Tasteless food had to return one dish, whilst the staff substitutes it. The quality and quantity disappointing.

Went to Gars after their Prawn toast was recommended. Wish we would have stopped at the starters as they were the tastiest dishes and most filling.

This Chinese restaurant cannot compare with London equivalents. We had dim sum for lunch which were adequate, but not special or stunning. Rather formulaic and tired. Char siu buns were quite good, a bit more filling would have helped. Some of the food seems to have been prepared off site and reheated or deep-fried. Duck with pancakes arrived pre-shredded; quite... More

I had what was meant to be a duck Thai green curry with steamed rice, my partner had sweet and sour pork. The Thai green curry was very mild and borderline tasteless, the sweet and sour pork wasn't as good as a cheap takeaway. Portions were meagre and drinks were overfilled with ice We wouldn't visit again!!

This meal was not worth the money we paid for it. Plain, greasy and nothing at all out of the ordinary. I have had better from my local takeaway and it was half the price!! The choice was limited and I feel really inflated costs for an 'evening' versus normal sit down menu. Will not be going back. Very disappointed.

Friendly staff and great food. Our seven year old really enjoyed the chicken liver and the oxtail! Will be visiting again.

Description
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
