I came here on Tuesday with my husband and his brother. On entry the restaurant if pleasant enough, it does however I feel anyway try to profess to be something it's not and that's top end. As usual my favourite wine (a sauvignoun blanc New Zealand from Malborough) was over priced at £30 a bottle and of course they didn't... More

We went here for a pre-show supper, the restaurant was fairly quiet as it was early. We had the top of the range special meal which came with a free bottle of house wine if you eat between 4 - 7 pm. The food as always is very well prepared and is good both to look at and eat, even... More

It is expensive but it is worth every penny! I always order sticky beef and it is always up to a standard and very tasty. I think you can also use it with tastecard during the week which is great

Late lunch on a Saturday afternoon, we had a selection of dim sum. All were delicious, but the crispy baby squid in particular was great. Friendly and attentive service, this is definitely somewhere I would recommend and would want to go to again.

Family trip to Brighton, with a lovely lunch. We love dim sum and we were so pleased to walk into this place. First impressions, it looked quite up market, nothing wrong with this but with a 19 month old little boy, I was a little concerned he would cause a scene. But on entering, the staff were a delight, very... More

Despite ordering from Gars via Deliveroo, I've never actually taken the time to sit in the restaurant itself. From the outside it looks a little intimidating, at times brightly lit, pristinely prepared tables and well dressed waiting staff (all good problems to have, perhaps I just prefer more of a relaxed approach). The evening menu is somewhat expensive, however, we... More

Superb food, very well presented with good polite service. However their prices must be the most expensive in town. What adds to the annoyance is the addition of a 10% service charge to the bill at the end. As their drinks are already vastly marked up, this really is a cheek.

This was my first visit to Gars and I didn't come away disappointed. My son and I didn't exactly 'go fo it' in terms of quantity or courses, but what we had was very good. My son reckoned his starter of Won-Ton soup was the best he had ever tasted. My sesame prawn on toast was also top drawer. But... More

Description
A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.
