Had an amazing Sunday roast here today. Arrived without having booked but only just after 12pm and they had a table free. We were told right away that there was a booking for 1.45pm but that gave us plenty of time. Both of us chose...the roast beef, and you could also choose medium or well done. It was served pretty quickly with roast potatoes, a giant Yorkshire pudding and extra gravy, with a selection of 5 other veg. Pretty stuffed after all that so we didn’t need any pudding. The restaurant was full and buzzing and a really great old smugglers pub venue. The staff were super attentive but not overbearing. Really polite and friendly, lovely atmosphere and beautiful food.More

We have eaten in smugglers cott on many occasions over many years, unfortunately on this visit the succulent sounding” medallions of fillet steak cooked in a mushroom sauce with cream and brandy” turned out to be overcooked CHUNKS of beef neither resembling fillet or medallions....It was returned to the “Chef” who sent a message saying apologises and do not charge for the meals.More

Had a weekend in Looe and booked this restaurant for Sunday lunch. We both had the sirloin and we can honestly say it’s the best pub roast we’ve every had. Really tender meat and an excellent selection of vegetables. Lovely historic and quirky building. Friendly...and helpful staff. Would love to return and try the rest of the menu.More

We visited Smugglers Cott last year for the evening but we were keen to experience Sunday lunch, after being recommended it by a local FB page. We booked last week ahead of our weekend in Looe and we were seated on the lower floor, very...atmospheric (if not a little claustrophobic if you think about how far down you are!). I hadn’t realised that the only option at lunchtime for children was the child’s Sunday roast (only a minor issue!). Drinks were served swiftly after ordering, along with our meat preferences. Our meals arrived shortly with the meat, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding and gravy on our plates and the vegetables served in separate dishes - at first I didn’t think there looked like there was enough vegetables but I am certain if we had needed more, they would have been obliging. There was a good variety. I possibly would have liked a bit more meat. I got 3 smallish slices of pork loin with crackling. Vegetable wise we had carrot, swede, peas, cabbage, creamed leeks and cauliflower cheese along with roast potatoes. As much as we enjoyed our meal, it did feel all a little rushed and I felt at the time there was no option to ‘hang out’. That said with 3 children, once they’d finish - it was time to go! We loved it and will be back again. 5 drinks snd 5 meat Sunday lunches (3 children) £81 inc tip.More

My wife and I are fans of Cornwall and Looe in particular but this was our first visit since the lockdowns. We have eaten at The Smugglers several times before and have always enjoyed the food and found the prices to be reasonable for what...we have received. Sadly the food appears to have gone down in quality and the prices being charged have gone up disproportionately for what is now mediocre food at best. I ordered the “Posh Beef And Reef” which is priced at £34. The steak was cooked as I asked but it was tough and seemed more like a very small piece of rump rather than the fillet it states on the menu. The scallops were mushy and very bland which I’ve found to usually be the case with the cheaper frozen varieties. The king prawn wasn’t great but it was acceptable. The mussels, however, were absolutely terrible. The taste of the liquor on the shells was nice but the mussel meats were miniscule where there even was any as I had several shells with no mussel in them at all. The shells themselves were tiny by usual standards and completely substandard. In fact I’d say they were far too small and juvenile to have been harvested and put for sale. An elderly couple were sat at the next table to us and the man was served a moules marinere that he ordered as a main and he said that his mussels were also abysmal. He complained (very politely) to the waitress, who sounded German I think, and she told him that the mussels from Fowey have some kind of disease and the restaurant are having to source their mussels from an alternative supplier. The man made the point that the quality of the mussels was not acceptable and that they should have been taken off the menu but the waitress just made a face, rolled her eyes and walked off which we all thought was very rude and unprofessional. Our cheesecake desserts were ok, average supermarket quality but ok, but again vastly overpriced for what’s served. Our previous visit to this restaurant had been in the summer preceding the lockdowns as I remember and the food was far better, especially the quality of the ingredients. The prices seemed far more reasonable and realistic too. We left feeling ripped off and actually quite sad.More

16th April 2023 Four of us were meandering through the narrow back lanes of Looe and came across this Inn. 2 ladies came out for freash air during their birthday celebration. The praise and compliments were of the highest order. As we were on a...double birthday celebration ourselves we returned early evening. First member of staff we met was Joanna. Immediately her friendliness and professionalism indicated we were going to enjoy our time there. The next person was Rob who gave us a tour of the premises and explained it's historic points. Ordering drinks with Joanna, everything was covered including the types of glass were preferred by each person. Never met the chef, yet they are the heros with the food. The poached Pollock was outstanding. Arguments ensued, the ladies insisted the sticky chicken was superior, while my friend just lost himself in the tender loin. Again the way the vegetables would be served was confirmed before they arrived. Just a warning. Book in advance. We were lucky!More
