I wasn’t going to write a negative review because Pitchfork has often been one of my favourite restaurants in Nelson. But there’s nothing like coming away from a dinner with friends feeling annoyed and disappointed, to motivate a realistic response. We ate dinner at Pitchfork...last night. First off we were disappointed to see that they still have their Covid screens between each table. It makes for a very isolated, feeling in a very pretty restaurant. Why? We were also disappointed that after every question we had about the food we were told to scan the QR code and look at the menu. It was very annoying. We’re coming out for a nice dinner. And not a cheap one. We don’t want to have to bring our phones out, scan the QR code, put on our glasses and read the menu. We want to be handed an elegant printed menu. Or we’d like to be offered interesting insight from the server. Our expectations too high perhaps? All four of us at the table were really looking forward to the brisket - the featured entrée. After we were settled in with our cocktails, and were ready to order our meal, we were informed that the brisket was sold out. It would’ve been really great to know that before we had ever even ordered our drinks. So we were left to scan the QR code again and find an alternative to dinner. The dinner menu is very limited. I did not want a salad, I did not want to share a chicken, I did not want to choose from two burgers(when we’re out for a ‘nice’ meal), and I did not want a $45 steak. It’s definitely annoying when you have to choose your entrée by process of elimination. So the only alternative was cabbage rolls. I read the description, sounded interesting and ordered. The two cabbage rolls lacked any seasoning, and as far as I could tell, lacked most of the ingredients that were listed on the menu. They were big and bland and almost 100% rice. And….. they were $30! Expectations too high again, maybe? Others at the table ordered burgers. Not exactly what we had expected to be eating at this nice restaurant for dinner. Dessert was another fail. We ordered the chocolate lava cake. There was not an iota of chocolate sponge texture around the edge. And definitely nothing lava-like in the center. It was a blob of jellied cake batter. I actually don’t think it should’ve been served. And I think it’s OK to have high expectations for a chocolate lava cake - it’s a very simple to make dessert and a standard in most restaurants. The final fail was, upon paying the bill, the lowest tip amount to choose from was 18%. This left us with a very bad taste in our mouth. Overall, I guess our expectations were just too high.More
