My wife treated me to dinner at Barrel in Simcoe for Valentine’s Day. We were able to get a reservation for 7pm. When we arrived we were offered two table location options which is a nice touch. The menu was apparently less than usual but there were plenty of choices and they all looked great. Our server was very pleasant and she checked in on us often topping up coffee and water. I had Veal Marsala and my wife had Chicken Milano. Both were extremely good. With appetizers, wine, main course and desert the bill was just over $100. We will definitely be returning soon and would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Never Disapointing

I moved to this area in 2017 i had lived in GTA for 40 years. Naturally i was looking for good eateries. I really cannot explain how The Barrel restaurant presents itself. Upon entry a lovely aroma fills the air. The food is extremely well prepared and tasty. The staff are very polite. Sometimes the service can be slow, not all the time, and you definitely need to reserve at busy times. A very nice authentic italian fare.

We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Large tents used for a patio suited us well. The staff were pleasant and knowledgeable. A group of 6 of us were served beverages as ordered, fast and efficiently. Our orders were taken with shared appetizers and the costs were broken out between the three couples! Impressed! as was a bottle of white the ladies ordered. Appetizers came and were hot and tasty. Calamari nice and crispy. Mains followed in a timely manner without being rushed through our apps. I had the Veal Marsala which was a health portion and nicely presented. All mains were full size and tasty. I am sure the interior ambiance would be nice as well, but in Covid times it was nice to be outside.

3 of us decided to try this place last night for a meal.The location and parking was easily accessible and well laid out.The exterior is appealing and traditional. The interior upon entering is a bit dated..could use new floors and I noticed the transitions between the floors were wore out and gone..a small hazard for tripping or falling for both servers and patrons. We were seated promptly and drink orders were taken. The wait time for the drinks was a bit longer than expected. A bottled local beer, a sangria and a pepsi,/ two ice waters. The menu was exceptional and a good selection. We ordered the pei mussels as a appetizer and got our salads that were included in our meals , creole pasta, spaghetti and meatballs,steak sandwich. The server was good. The Lager which was local wasn't very good at all. The mussels showed up after the two of us were done our salads so one of us had to eat their appetizer separately. The meals showed up seperately. The creole wasn't spicy like it claimed and two of the 5 mussels were bad.The scallops were perfectly done so that was good. I brought to the waitresses attention and she returned to say her supervisor wasn't in so she couldn't offer me a discount. I paid full for a meal 21.99 that wasn't worth it in my opinion. The shrimp on the pasta were acceptable but small and a bit overcooked. I wont return to this location. The server and the scallops were the only good thing about this spot for me.Disapointed as it was rated well and had good reviews..maybe I caught it on a bad night? I usually give places 2-3 chances but in this case not going to happen. Mediocre at best.

Always disappoints. I come to Simcoe about once a year for the past three years and as this place is ranked #1 I keep wanting it to be a good place to eat but I never delivers. Wait time between seating and ordering over 8 mins. Forgot drink orders. Underwhelming pizza, 8 slice, was over $20 and the ‘bacon’ was this strange man-made pinkish colour and not very edible. House made dressing and the server was the saving grace. Not sure why or how this is #1 in Simcoe when there are so many other wonderful and higher quality eateries to choose from?!?

It would also be helpful to verify if the service was was OK even though you mention that the drink order was forgotten. The bacon on your pizza was our typical pizza bacon but we also have bacon strips if you like. Although The food was amazing tonight (Angel hair primavera and veal), I was rather shocked, that while we are in our 2nd Covid lockdown, measures to take precautions are seriously lacking here. It was busy tonight, not surprising as they do have excellent food! However, it was shocking to see way to many people inside the entrance all at once picking up food! 😬 Most upsetting really, was the three men sitting at the bar next to one another, not even 3’ apart! One man had a mask on properly, one had a poorly made mask that slid underneath his nose while he talked (where he left it for sometime, before hauling it back up) and the last guy had a thin little bandana tied around his neck that hung down underneath his nose. Judging by the delivery bags on the bar, I suspected that this may have been their delivery team. My boyfriend and I really believe in supporting local restaurants but during this covid scare, this setup is not really conducive to covid safe behaviour. They should have at least left the doors open a bit for some good, fresh air flow, but no, that wasn’t happening either. Covid is airborne!!!! This did not feel like a very safe place to be, even for the 5 minutes I stood their waiting for my food. I went in at the designated time...,not a minute sooner! We don’t plan to go back unless we hear that they bring out orders like Erie Beach does in Pt. Dover, or covid is over!

Overpriced establishment

I wish I could justify coming here more than once every couple years. For the price you pay and what you receive, it is nowhere near what it should be, especially for the quality. I think this restaurant needs a total overhaul and revamp to the menu, not only for affordability but also quality and portion control. It is my hope that the owner and chefs can come together because there is a lot of money to be made if they are able to do it the right way. But unfortunately (or fortunatley for them) Simcoe does not have much at all to offer so if you want a dine-in experience, the Barrel would have to win by default.

excellent food but..

Family went in to celebrate a birthday and was greeted well by staff. This place was not looking very busy so food was at table at a decent time. The food was outstanding, hot and presentation was spot on. The only downside was a sever came to our table getting orders was kind of in a hurry and not listening to our requests. I asked for an extra plate and she didn't seem to acknowledge as the person beside me noticed as well, so we thought we give her a chance to bring a plate back as soon as she was able. we seen the waitress start talking to other tables. So we caught her eye again and her response was.. ok I will just drop everything and get you a plate. I think she didn't realize we heard her say that in an under tone So a tip was not reflected with her comment. I must say, I am sure the staff are over whelmed at times but the place was spotted with customers only .So no reason really to be so rude. Other than that incident I definitely give this place a visit!!

This place is basically like Eastside Mario's but without the Badda Bing Badda Boom. It has a quiet environment even when it's busy and the service isn't slow but it isn't fast either, it's that easy so you can enjoy the night with your party. The food is great, try the salad house dressing or stuffed chicken marsala. When is time for sweets, they bring you samples of the menu so you can see it..... It's mean but awesome.

Pre Wedding Family Dinner for 33 people

Our son was having his wedding reception at Cranberry Creek Farms and given so many of our family was from out of town and would arrive the day before, we wanted to host a family dinner. It was suggested by a friend who lives in Simcoe to check out The Barrel. Dealing with them was a breeze. Corresponded via email. Nick suggested to do up a special menu of 3 to 4 choices which they made up and had at the seatings. They set -up of the tables, service and food was amazing. Wonderful evening was had by all.

Hungry at Suppertime

We stopped of here with the patio open on beautiful July evening. My wife had a lovely pasta dish while I ordered Lasagna. Service was fairly prompt given that staff shortages are a problem throughout the industry after the pandemic. The Lasagna was ample in size and very tasty Overall an enjoyable experience. Convient on site parking and safe social distancing.

What happened to the Barrel?

What has happened to the Barrel? I realize that covid closed some places down for a while but this restaurant has completely gone downhill. The service from the front staff and server was fantastic but the chef needs to be replaced. The pasta was dry and the ceasar salad appeared to be made from iceberg lettuce not romaine. It was a light pale green nothing like romaine. So very disappointed, For the prices they charge that food should be top notch not mediocre. It will be a long time before we go back.

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry you were disappointed with the food. The romaine hearts that our supplier gave us was on the lighter shade. We normally get regular romaine heads but the quality was not great last week so we went with the lighter romaine hearts. We have always put the regular amount of sauce on all our pasta dishes but if that was not enough we would have been more than happy to add more sauce to your dish. Barrel - a gem in Simcoe

Stopped by on a Wednesday night as the hotel suggested it- the place was hoppin' and clearly the hot spot to eat in Simcoe with good reason. Service was prompt, friendly. The teapots were big with long spouts (no spills!) and the Earl Grey tasted wonderfully of Bergamot. The tomato soup was amazingly tasty and zingy (and certainly never saw the inside of any can!). The spouse's Caesar Salad with chicken was perfect (and fairly diabetic friendly for her). My chicken tetrazinni could not possibly have been tastier. The Keith's beer was nice and cold and really hit the spot. Desert was apple filling baked in a puff pastry, topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel that was a perfect finish to a meal that could not have been better. Next time I am heading anywhere even remotely near Simcoe I will sidetrack to eat here. JSM

Best veggies

While visiting Simcoe, I was looking for a place for dinner. I found The Barrel, within walking distance from my hotel, and went there several times. I tried a chicken with dried tomatoes and other stuff; it was delicious, but the jewel of the crown for me was the side sauteed veggies, correct seasoning, tender and crunch, and amazing flavor

I had the chicken parm with a small order of garlic bread delivered to a nearby hotel. Very fast and friendly delivery driver. I liked the taste of the sauce and the chicken was excellent. The free bum they give you with the meal was delicious. I would definitely return.
