Been past the pub quite a few times on the motorbikes, today decided to stop for a coffee and then decided to have lunch. Well our group of four was really impressed with the food, sat outside and had excellent table service. Would highly recommended...this place for beer or lunch. Very friendly, great service an excellent food. We had two scampi’s and two macaroni cheese. All food was excellent. Didn’t book just stopped on the off chance. Would highly recommend The Black Lion.More

Stopped here for the first time today as have previously driven past and always fancied stopping and trying it. Sat outside and was greeted very quickly by a very friendly lady who took our drinks order We only opted for chips for a quick bite...to eat but were really impressed by the quality and size of the meals being served to other guests! Lovely afternoon in the sun and was made to feel very welcome by the staff! Will definitely returnMore

This pub offers an excellent take away service. Food piping hot, ready at the exact time ordered and still hot by the time I arrived home (7 miles). Vegetables cooked to perfection and very generous portions. A rare delight in these Covid restricted times.

We popped in for lunch, not realising that they are offering 50% off all mains on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So we were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill. We had the most amazing jacket potatoes, light, fluffy middle, crispy on the outside.

We popped in today for lunch to take advantage of the 50% off deal the pub are doing until November Monday to Wednesday. It won't be the last time we eat here as the food we had today was to die for!!! My husband had...the beef stew with dumplings which he said was delicious. I had chicken breast in brandy and mushroom sauce served with new potatoes and vegetables, which again was amazing and really tasty. The veg were cooked to perfection . Just a shame we only had space for a main course as the desserts sounded wonderful. Can't wait to go again. Well worth a visit. The service was relaxed and very friendly. Highly recommended.More

This was our first visit to The Black Lion but it won't be our last. We went with friends for lunch and a very good lunch it was. First of all the place is Covid safe. Hand sanitiser was available, the tables were socially distanced...and there is a one-way system in operation. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the food!! There was a very good choice on the menu and it was extremely tasty, well presented and the portion size will satisfy the heartiest appetite. I had gammon and I've never seen a piece of gammon so large. It filled the plate, Excellent value for moneyMore

After being in Rye which was so busy we came to Appledore to look for the Red Lion which we went to 50 years ago. Great then! Now called the Black Lion. Arrived around 14:50 and found table in sun outside. At first a bit...concerned as me I hand written with scruffy plastic covering. My daughter had wanted fish and chips and my wife joined her. I ordered the steak and Stilton pie. Became even more concerned but meals took ages to come with later customers getting their food before us. Mentioned to staff but no apology and was told it all depends on which meal the chef wants to cook first! So at last the food arrived after about 50/60 minutes. However the food was a game changer. Fish and chips were awesome. Best batter I have ever had. ( yes had had a little taster) Fish perfect (COD). and chips again perfect. Wife and daughter said best ever tasted!!!! My steak pie was very tasty and vegetables again cooked to a high quality. Only slight niggle was gravy slightly salty. All of us were stuffed and saying ‘ very worth the wait’ even if staff at first were somewhat dismissive. Would have been 5 stars if not for initial frustration and gravy. Would definitely eat here again and hope for quicker service.More
