my wife and I came across this find on our costal trip and thought we’d stop in as it looked like a lovely country pub! However, when we walked in, the barmaid was the most pretty rude young girl, she looked miserable and as we...approached after looking around for a table, as it was quite busy with people eating, she smiled, but when we asked if they were doing food, she laughed and said ‘no, they bring their own!’. This infuriated me as the sarcasm was unnecessary. While taking a drink order from us at the bar (which nevertheless, she looks too young to even be behind a bar!) she continuously, ignored us to tell her coworkers what to do, at least finish serving your customers before you start ordering others about. Besides from this, the food was lovely and so was the mannerisms of the young man waiting on us. She could learn a thing or two from him!More

Popped in for a quick drink as we were passing through the village, lovely friendly staff and plenty of seating outside.

Visited the Black Lion for Sunday lunch, can’t book but wasn’t too busy. Had the steak and Stilton pie, very tasty - must say the best pie I have had in a long time. My partner had the steak and kidney pudding which was also...very good. Hearty portions and plenty of veg. Service was good and there is a good selection of beer.More

Great day at the Appledore Vintage Car Rally which was topped off by a great meal at The Black Lion. Warm and friendly atmosphere with attentive staff. The food was great and healthy portions too! Highly recommend the steak and kidney pudding and fish and...chips. Our grandchildren were equally happy with their meals. Will be going back sooner rather than later.More

We found the Black Lion while visiting the area for a weekend break and what a gem of a place! Staff friendly and welcoming, drinks and food prices very reasonable and service very prompt. I had Fish & Chips, priced £14.50 which was very reasonable...considering the large portion size. A country pub which is doing everything right in the beautiful village of Appledore. We would recommend this to all and look forward to visiting again 😁More

Once again visited this little gem for a feast of delights at lunchtime. I had my usual steak & kidney pudding but, for the first time I suffered ‘menu envy’, the steak pie served to another table looked totally delicious! My dad had a massive...plate of fish n chips, my sister had a smaller portion of the same. Mum settled for a jacket spud and kept going on about how much ham was inside it! Three lovely looking desserts followed to round off a superb meal. About 10 minutes later I went back to the pub to question the bill, I thought I’d been undercharged but no, it was all correct, they’d charged half price for the smaller portion. £76 for 4 people, including desserts and drinks? Outstanding! 👍👍More

Stopped for a ploughman’s after a lovely walk along the Military Canal. The pub was understandably busy given it was a Bank Holiday, but the welcome was warm and friendly. The lunch was spot on and very generous in portion size. Will definitely be back...for an evening meal.More

Decided to pop out for lunch and thought we would go back to the Black Lion. Was not sure if portion size had changed so I suggested starter and main for each of us! Found that portion size was the same and the Pate starter...was very filling..... We had The Black Lion Burger and the Cheese Pasta for mains and we were both unable to finish what we had. The food was piping hot, fresh and had some great flavours. The staff/owners are friendly and chatty and I would whole heartedly recommend this place. It's a good job we don't live too close as we would be in there a lot more often...More

We were getting out as the Covid 19 lockdown was just easing.. some pubs were going bust. But as we drew into Appledore a warm welcome and others enjoying their lunches was palpable. They even new what a 'sarsperella' was (a non-alcoholic drink from the...Wild West !). Can't wait to go back in better timesMore

Fantastic customer service and homemade meals for a large group. Drinks topped up and nothing too much trouble! Sticky toffee pudding- not homemade and disappointing but lots of other choices.

Attentive , professional, friendly staff, that made us feel at home from the minute we walked through the door- nothing was ever too much. Staff are not rushed, everything served in good time and they actually have time to engaged in conversation. They checked on...us throughout our meal, making sure we had enough drinks, condiments etc. Traditional pub with a simple English favourites menu.
