The very close proximity to Ashurst train station was the main reason for choosing The New Forest for dinner, as we could leave the car at home. The restaurant was surprisingly quiet for a Friday evening and we has a choice of tables. Four of us all ordered starters and main courses. The black pudding hash from the specials board was nice enough, but could have had a more black pudding flavour and the prawn cocktail was fairly standard, nothing too special. Mussels were ordered by two of us, and were a good portion although the mussels themselves were small. The steak salad was very nice with good flavour to the steak. The fish and chips were also a good size and very tasty. Service was friendly without being too intrusive and we were never without a drink as the team were on hand the minute we needed a re-fill. Only one ale was available , HSB which was enjoyed several times. The bill was reasonable, made more so by Fullers sending through a 25% discount birthday email, result.

Upgraded comfy garden furniture made a welcome appearance since our last annual visit for lunch. Given the mixed reviews I wasn't expecting a great however the garden is the draw for lunch with two other ladies. We were pleasantly surprised by the standard of food and service. Our (heavy for arthritic hands) tray of drinks was kindly taken out to our table while we chose our preferences from the main menu. Two of the Goan madras curries were ordered, one with chips and the other with rice. Maggi asked for the prawn cocktail starter as her 'main' and all three choices came together as requested. The curries were spicy hot, it is labelled correctly as Madras heat, and extremely tasty including the charred whole red chilli. The prawn cocktail was a generous starter size, and was followed by a pavlova style desert which looked very rich. The staff were attentive and checked back several times if everything was good. It may be worth asking beforehand, as I did at the bar, what items are not available as amongst other items the Thai curry and the Key Lime tart were unavailable that Monday. There is plenty of outdoor seating sheltered under cover, open air with parasols or picnic style tables further out in the free range garden area ! Understandably, with direct access to the car park and forestry land over a stile, they do not run tabs for outside tables. We have eaten inside in the past within a stylish conservatory. Overall we had a very enjoyable visit (especially my curry and chips). These days I don't think the pricing is unreasonable given it's location.

Turned up at 8pm for the England v Netherlands game with 5 friends, having travelled back from London. On arrival the pub was busy but not packed. We asked about ordering food, and were told in no uncertain terms 'no food!' There were tables that had clearly eaten recently. Obviously very disappointed but we stayed to watch the football, buying approx 18 drinks between us before leaving after the game. Surely on what I assume is a good number of people in the pub, even if you'd done bowls of chips or simple burgers you could have made a decent amount of money?? Good atmosphere in the pub, but the staff need to learn how to smile! Won't be rushing back.

We were a table of 4 adults 2 little children. We booked last week. . Arrived told to sit where we wanted outside, which was fine. Found the cleanest of all the dirty tables. Get your own dirty cutlery and order at the bar we were told by a very stand offish person. I chose to have the bruschetta starter and the crab starter as I do not eat meat and there was the smallest of choices, not even any fish. The bruschetta arrived, consisting of 2 very small thin pieces of bread, dried up not toasted, four Cherry tomatos cut in half on top, no basil as described in the menu. £8.50 for that !! The crab cake was ok, apparently it came with hollandaise, which consisted of a thumb smear on the plate. The pies were mediocre. The child’s vegetarian burger was so hard and dry he couldn’t bite it. We tried and nearly broke a tooth. The little 6 years olds meal just did not come. There was no one about at any time checking back or even around, it was not busy. Twenty minutes after my Son went searching for a member of staff the meal came. Of course by then he was very upset and had to fill up on bits from our plates. I discretely asked a member of staff if they had been busy as the bank holiday and he said no. Honestly avoid this place, 2 starters, 3 pies 2 kids meals £91.50! This did not include the drinks or a clean table and totally do it yourself.

Awful experience, we went with our 12 year old son on a Sunday at 5:30 for dinner. One other table in the restaurant was booked. Ordered scampi for our son and steak for me, 5 mins later we were told they have no scampi and no steak so had to change order!! On top of that we then realised the background music playing had a song which continuously said the word f@ck. it was then followed by multiple other songs continuously using the F word, not exactly family friendly when you go out for a dinner with your kids. shame as it’s a lovely spot but food is crap and staff don’t seem to know what they are doing! Won’t be going back.

Popped in for a midweek lunch during the school holidays and it was eerily quiet. This is normally our go to place in the Forest and we’ve had birthdays, anniversaries and so many meals over the years. It’s always been a great Fullers pub, but it just wasn’t the same place last week. The welcome wasn’t particularly warm, but the food was awful. The children’s chicken goujons were inedible (overcooked to the point where we were worried the little one’s teeth would crack). The pie of the day was plonked on a bit of mash and some cabbage. The burger was passable. All for £70 including one round of soft drinks. It’s always been at the high end for prices, but never minded paying good money for good service and good food. This was not that. Shame as it’s lovely to look at, inside and out and in a great location.

Shrinkflation has arrived. And all for over ÂŁ30 a head. If you have an appetite, do not come here. The only thing they have in abumdance is lettuce. One of us wanted to have their Chicken Caesar Salad as a main. Oh yes, they said. Out came a small plate of an egg, with lettuce covering something. Not an anchovy, parmesan, nor crouton, in sight. And all for a mere ÂŁ15.95 Mains price. Another chose their Steak Pie. Out came pie, chips,,,,, and letttuce and gravy. Then to cap it all, we chose (old school) Spotted Dick. Your mind goes to a pile of suety currants, swimming in custard. Out came a small disk of sponge, a few centimetres across, covering a dab of custard. And for that they charged ÂŁ7.95, or about a pound per cc. Yes, let us leave this.

This was our first visit to the pub for a Christmas meet up with family who live in the New Forest. First impressions were that it was a large pub with an extensive dining area and outside garden. A traditional pub, but significantly lacking in any character or appeal. Firstly it was freezing cold inside, despite having two open fire places there were no lit fires in the hearth to welcome patrons. The Christmas decorations were lack lustre and the atmosphere flat. Very few customers were noted in the bar and moving to the large dining room there was one other sitting of a family of eight and our table of four. The two serving waitresses were polite, but a little officious. We were unable to choose the Christmas menu as this required pre ordering (not sure why because there was very few people eating there ) so we ordered from the main pub menu. As a group we went for a two course option of starters and mains. One starter arrived and then we waited whilst the other table was served in between. Finally, we all had our starters and my “soup of the day”was very bland and tasted like a Maggi powder mix, stirred up on the hob and only just warmed through. The baba ganoush was an uninspired dip of grey mush with a cold flat bread cut into strips, no trimmings in sight. The sausage and mash main dish was equally bland and it was evident that the sausages had been deep fried and overcooked, making them difficult to cut and even harder to eat. The Camembert arrived with no trimmings and a sliced baguette, white and pasty like a part baked bread that hasn’t been in the oven. Once more no trimmings, no butter or rosemary as suggested on the menu. By now, we were cold to the core, so thought we would end our meal with a coffee only to be told that the coffee machine was broken. All in all the food was very disappointing and the experience put us off using the pub in the future. In fact it felt like the pub was being run down and on the point of closure, like so many pubs these days.

The food was absolutely dire—lukewarm chicken curry that looked like it had been left over from a 90s dinner party, a pitiful portion of mac and cheese (which, by the way, cost £15.50—probably to cover the emotional damage), and kids' meals so unappetizing even a hungry tramp would turn his nose up. The portions were so tiny, I started wondering if I'd accidentally ordered from the " Tapas menu". Frankly, the chef might want to rethink their career—maybe something where cooking isn't involved. On the plus side, it’s in a lovely spot for a pint after a dog walk—because at least the beer’s still safe

We visited a pub in Ashurst recently, hoping for a nice family meal, but were left very disappointed. My wife ordered the mussels, which looked questionable from the start and had an unpleasant smell—clearly not fresh. I ordered the fish and chips, and it was a letdown. It seemed like the fish had been fried straight from frozen, resulting in an undercooked, soggy texture. My daughter had the bruschetta, which was simply a single slice of bread, not at all what we expected. Overall, the food quality was poor, and for the prices charged, it felt like a complete waste of money. I would never recommend this place and won’t be returning. I believe we deserve a refund for this terrible meal. Avoid this pub at all costs!

Nachos were expensive and really awful… the tinyest but of cheese and everything else was rubbish, the prawn sandwich was watery and the bread was stale. The park and garden are great for children. As a local it is a shame that the food was so awful. We will return but not to eat. It was a complete waste of money.

Nice pub, but... Food took ages to come. We ordered a kids pasta dish which had clearly been in the microwave far too long and some carrot sticks that weren't peeled and so dry you wouldn't even give them to a donkey. The four mushroom sandwiches we had were on cheap supermarket bread that was drier than a flip flop found in the Sahara with mozzarella that could only be detected with a magnifying glass and a smear of avocado. Why it's so difficult for an establishment to cook basic food properly just baffles me!

Arrived at new forest ashurst looking forward to a nice meal, greeted by friendly staff and shown to a table. Table was all sticky on top so asked for it to be cleaned . We ordered Thai green curry and battered fish with chips and minted peas . The batter on the fish was burnt, we told the waiter and he said he would mention it to the chef. We ordered desserts , the lemon possett was very poor in quality, it was like water when it should of been like a mousse . When we asked for the bill the staff member said he would take 10% off the bill, the fish and chips cost 16.65 and we got 5.30 off the bill . The decor inside is nice but the food quality is very poor. Will never visit again and definitely not recommend this place They could do so much better

We visited today a group of 8 adults 3 teens and 4 dogs. Although we originally booked for indoors we had other friends join so we phoned and our reservation was changed to outside which seemed fair enough. We chose some new outdoor seating which caused confusion as staff didn’t know the table numbers. Our group ordered separately but here’s the strange thing, our barbecue chicken was being delivered to the table before my husband had even returned from the bar, We watched a waiter try and offer it to a few other tables as we explained we’d literally only just ordered. We ate it, for £14 it was unremarkable and basic, the speed bothered us most, was it a meal returned by another table ? I don’t suppose we will ever know but it was unnerving to say the least. We finished our food with no sign of the rest of the groups, they had to wait another 45 minutes for there food to arrive and once again it was overpriced and disappointing. The waiter also managed to tip chips over the table and swear about it. We won’t be back. With summer coming you might want to have a review of your service as this was poor.

We met friends here for lunch on their recommendation. Lovely pub & great garden bar set in the New Forest. Unfortunately the food let it down for us. The portion sizes were small for the price and all meals were fairly average in flavour & presentation. The bbq chicken main, for example see the photo, was ÂŁ14 but small and bland. The kids ÂŁ6 burger was the same size as the adults ÂŁ14 burger. All burgers just came with minimal sauces and a single slice of tomato & lettuce. The kids portion of pasta was tiny, served in the same sized dish as the coleslaw side - in the photo - & more suited for a baby. Disappointing to spend so much money & still leave hungry.
