Not far from our hotel, it is a traditional Canadian restaurant. It offers an evening menu with starter, 1 dish, dessert and soft drink or glass of wine at a fixed price of about 65 Canadian dollars (plus taxes). The same menu served before 5pm is paid 25 Canadian dollars. Dishes are to be chosen from the à la carte menu (attention some dishes require an extra charge). Good and plentiful food. Service not very fast. Watch out for air conditioning shot to a thousand

Excellent experience from the time we walked in, make reservations as it fills up quickly. We each ordered something different and everyone found their food to be delicious. It is an all inclusive menu with wine or beer followed by appetizers then entree and finished with desert $68.95 each. Our waiter was probably the best I have had he took his time and explained each course as well as explaining everything served on your plate, we found him to be friendly and thorough and took the best care of us even with a very busy restaurant. The venue was beautiful with stone walls and true Quebec French Canadian atmosphere. Loved it so much will definitely return.

This was our third visit to Aux Anciens Canadiens. We had the “early, before 5PM” special, which we feel is very good value offering of good choices. Have never been disappointed! Food was great and the service was attentive. Very nice ambience, with the building dating back to the late 1600s. I definitely recommend it to round out your Qu3bec experience!

This was the first restaurant we tried when we arrived in Quebec City. We called ahead since it was a Saturday, and thankfully, they had a table available around 8 pm. The restaurant is located in Old Quebec, and parking was a bit tricky - we ended up parking at the Fairmont, which was VERY expensive! The restaurant had a charming atmosphere. It wasn't too quiet but also not as loud as other busy places. The servers were wearing cute uniforms that made it feel like you were in Europe. The store displays had a charming, vintage touch, with old jars adding to the nostalgic vibe. It's a small space, so the tables are a bit tight. The food was good, but considering the portion size and the price, it didn't feel like enough. Our server was really nice and spoke English. We ordered two set meals, which included a glass of house wine or beer on tap, an appetizer or soup, a main course, and dessert. For appetizers, we had poutine and crab cakes. I liked the cur cheese on the poutine, and the crab cakes were good, though the portion was really small. For the main course, we got cordon bleu and thin slices of tenderloin. Both were decent but nothing special, though the portion sizes were fine. The tenderloin came with mashed potatoes and some vegetables. For dessert, we had maple syrup creme brulee and maple syrup pie. My friend enjoyed the creme brulee, but I found the pie too sweet for my taste. We also asked for bread, which was delicious - and free! We paid around $60 for each set meal, but when we passed the restaurant the following day at lunchtime, we noticed it was $20 cheaper.

Typical Montreal place but disappointed by the services. The menu is quite expensive and you have to add dollars for certain dishes such as the 6 escargots or the Mink bourguignon. The service is available and friendly but some fundamentals are missing such as serving the wine after having tasted it or moving the small plates before serving.

Trappings of a quaint, authentic Quebecois experience at a high price point. Gussied-up waiters in black and white. House wines from Chile, not Quebec. Salmon dry and overcooked and barely warm. Wild rice tasted like it was out of a box. The elk/bison/venison dish ordered rare was served medium. Mixed vegetables bland, overcooked -- and again, not hot. The lack of respect for the food, let alone the customers, was disappointing. Waiter did not even question/acknowledge the half-eaten food.

The restaurant itself is quaint and cozy. The waiter we had was efficient but didn't take note of my lactose intolerance when I mentioned it to him before ordering. In fact, I asked if one of the dishes contained milk or dairy before I ordered. I ordered the escargots and the dish came out covered in cheese - I was disappointed that he hadn't mentioned this or thought to have the cheese removed! One of our party had the salad with goat cheese and found that the cheese had a weird smoky taste that was off putting. Two of us had the original meat pie (Grandmere) and found that the meat pie and meatballs had flavours that we didn't like (nutmeg?). The fourth in our party had the Beef Wellington and said that it was quite good. The desserts (sugar pie and creme brulee) were both good. This was the most expensive meal we had in Quebec City and the one that we like the least. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal but we would suggest that you go for the lunch special ($39.95) for the Table d'Hote (includes soup or salad, main, drink and dessert) which is a much better deal.

We had the prix fixe meal and most of it was good. The lobster shrimp bisque was cool and lacked lobster chunks or flavour. The poutine was actually very good and the tortiere was authentic. Avoid the wine with the prix fixe as its swill. At least the beef is legitimately decent québécois beer. The staff showed some really bad judgment when they put a table of ten or twelve overly entitled, annoying, loud, obnoxious jerks amongst a group of tables for romantic couples. These morons yelled back and forth from end to end of the table sufficiently to ruin every other person’s dinner. Huge mistake. I realize you want money from barbarians, but put them in a different room… or in the back alley where they belong.

This traditional restaurant is situated in the oldest house of Quebec. Don’t expect to find any parking space nearby – better take a taxi! The rooms have a cozy ambience and are decorated with absolutely remarkable wood carvings. The service is attentive but the food served is rather average, we found it even disappointing – including the specialty of the house the “Paté à la Viande du Quebec”. The salmon was too dry and the vegetables and potatoes lacked any class, prepared without the dedication you would expect in a place that claims to offer fine dining. You will also get just paper and no cloth napkins. The price-performance ratio therefore is not satisfactory at all and I should mention that we found their pricing system a bit confusing.

While we noticed this unique building and restaurant on our walks in Old Quebec, it was a stop and a recommendation on our Old Quebec Walking Tour. Additionally, friends who had visited Quebec City previously, each highly recommended Aux Anciens Canadeens for their great food. On our Walking Tour, the guide explains that the house, known as Maison Jacuet, was built in 1675-1676 and was one the largest houses in the upper-town at that time. The Aux Anciens Canadiens Restaurant has been at the house since 1966. Today the restaurant is in two connected buildings. We make reservations for Saturday night, just in case it may be crowded, as it is small restaurant. On arrival we are escorted to the upstairs of the original two story building. This room is specifically set up for parties of two. Aux Anciens Canadiens specialty is “old fashioned Quebec cuisine.” The dinner feature is a Three-Course Meal that includes glass of wine or beer for $64.99 (Canadian $). Wow! These servings are delicious and hearty Canadian food. Their white wine and dark beer are each very good. Our soups of Pumpkin and Pea are each very tasty and especially good on this cool day. Entrees of the Meat Pie and the Pork Tenderloin are really nice savory portions. Finishing with the tantalizing desserts of Maple Bread Pudding and Blueberry Pie is terrific. It is a wonderful dinner in a cozy setting for our last night in Quebec City.

We went to this place for lunch on our last day , but had we of found it sooner , we would have definitely returned.. The venue is quaint and the decor authentic, and in keeping with the style of this historic building. The set lunch menu was excellent, and really good value for money- to include a glass of wine. The food was all freshly cooked , very wholesome and traditional. It’s seldom to get pies with homemade pastry and they were just divine ! Nicholas our waiter was extremely attentive and took time to explain the menu. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

I tried this restaurant on the recommendation of friends who had been here a few years ago. Maybe it was the chef's day off because it did not meet rave review my friends gave. I chose the fixed price lunch menu so I could try different things. I chose tourtiere for a starter, a Quebec meat pie. There are as many recipes for this pie as there are cooks in Quebec. This one was middle of the road: a decent crust with a moist meat filling served with a chunky fruit ketchup: tomato, peach and onion which went well with the pie. The main was salmon in puff pastry with a lobster bisque sauce Vegetables were sauteed red cabbage and steamed fresh beans. Although flavourful, there was more potato than salmon in the filling. The sauce was the saving grace. A glass of beer or wine was included. The wine was a Chilean wine rather than local so I chose a local blonde beer which went nicely with the meal. The chocolate pie with fruit coulis I chose for dessert was possibly the worst pie I have ever had. The crust was so tough, the pool of coulis could not soften it. The person who made the crust for the tourtiere was not the same person who made the crust for this pie. The filling was so dense and sweet, it overwhelmed the chocolate flavour. Pie making is an art and the person who made this pie is no artist! Three bites of the generous serving was enough for me. Order something else for dessert. Service was very good and friendly. No washrooms on the main floor.

Four of us went for the "early, before 5pm" special. If you are hungry early this is the restaurant for you! $39.95 gives you a beverage ( red or white wine or beer), a huge selection of main courses plus tradition Quebecois deserts. 3 of us chose the Grand Mere special; tourtiere, ragoût de boulettes, baked beans, homemade ketchup & root vegetables. Absolutely delicious and left-overs came home with us. Our 4th member chose Lac St-Jean meat pie made with wild meats and loved it. The restaurant is cozy, the wait staff dressed in period are friendly, bilingual and knowledgeable. The same menu is offered at a slightly increased price after 5pm. Either way, this restaurant is wonderful to taste the traditional plates of Quebecois. It was a memorable evening, thank you Aux Anciens Canadiens.

We had a happy hour beverage here around two pm to check out the restaurant. We had dinner reservations that night for our anniversary and wanted to see if we should keep them or find another restaurant. We kept them! At dinner we both selected the “formule” which is a prix fixe situation. I had chicken cordon bleu with a generous side of wild rice, red cabbage and veggies. For my appetizer I had beet salad. For dessert I had a caramel/maple bread pudding. It comes with one glass of house wine, or beer, or a soda. It costs $56.95 Canadian each. The portions are on the large size. At dinner they saved their best table for us. The people watching was fantastic.

This is the oldest building in Old Quebec, we learned on a tour today, and the restaurant is named after the novel written by Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, the author who lived there!! It has traditional food, even though it is mostly for tourists, and there is a reasonable prix fixe menu with many options. Our server was so nice and attentive and the atmosphere was cozy. My honey turnip soup, the special of the day, was delicious, as was my goat cheese salad and maple crème brûlée were also really good. We heard several customers talk about how wonderful the food was and how they were returning for the meat pie.
