Heard so much about this landmark, Montreal institution so I figured I'd grab a few bagels for the train ride back to T.O. Meh. I was there just after 7am so you'd think they'd be fully stocked and fresh out of the oven, not so. Won't return.

Well recommend so we attended and enjoyed it after a night of entertainment. The locals and tourists all frequent this place, open 24 hours a day.

Isadore Shlafman started a bagel shop in Montreal when he arrived in 1919. In 1949 he bought a shop on Fairmont Street and lived above the bakery. Fairmont Bagels, now run by the grandchildren, is still located in the same shop on Fairmont Street so don't expect a quaint sitdown-this is a bakery with some serious work going on. The... More

Always piping hot and fresh! Can't beat them! Buy them by the half dozen and eat a couple straight out of the bag. Be even more decadent and pick up some cream cheese and lox to go on top. An essential part of the Montreal lifestyle.

For those who are expecting a place to sit down, this is not it. It's like a bakery - just order what you want at the counter and go - no seating. There's not much of a line, at least not when we were there, and even if there was, I would imagine it'd move quickly. You could see the... More

busy business cranking out thousands of fresh montreal style bagels every day. We bought a dozen then had a fresh one with cream cheese - excellent. One of the highlights of our trip.

Simply put: no. This is it. Hot. Wood oven baked. They do crazy volume so they are always fresh. They are the perfect balance between hearty and light. Lots of variety but if hot out of the oven is an essential go for the classic sesame seed or poppyseed. The entryway is industrial enough to convince you this is the... More

We were not happy to find that this restaurant had bagels only - no sandwiches, no lunches, no tables. Just bagels. But these were wonderful Montreal-style bagels. Once our expectations were adjusted, it was a worthwhile visit. We took the Metro there - which wasn't a great choice because after the stop, we still needed to walk for 30 minutes.

After much research before arriving in Montreal, a trip here was a must for a bagel lover. I brought a plain, cinnamon and raisin and a chocolate bagel. On returning to my hotel, I could not wait to try them. All 3 were SO hard, I couldn't even get a knife through them! They seemed to be bland and tasteless... More

We walked to Fairmount Bagel from Old Montreal based on TripAdvisor reviews about its great bagels and the suggestion that it was a "must visit" spot. Immediately upon arrival, we realized our notion of a "must visit" spot is very different. We also realized that our notion of a great bagel is also very different. This place stinks. Not worth... Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
