while walking Rue Sherbrooke looking for a place to eat, we stumbled upon Le Taj, about half a block south of Rue Sherbrooke on Stanley Street (southeast of Sherbrooke because of the awkward angle of Montreal's street grid). It was just after the dinner rush and the first memorable thing was the warmth of the staff. The three of us... More

You can just fill up with the excellent appetizers and not have enough room for the main dish. A little disappointed by the butter chicken but all the vegetables were great. Delicious mango lassi. Very attentive and courteous staff. Well located close to shopping.

The food was delicious. I do think the service could have been better. They didn't seem to be thrilled that our kids were with us. That said, the food was absolutely delicious. I will not go back to Montreal without eating here again.

Nice restaurant with big windows and high ceiling. Food was very good with a large selection. Bread was great. Server was friendly and attentive. A pretty good value for the price

We went to the Taj for dinner as a party of six. Service was good from the second we stepped into the front door. The menu had a good variety and the waiter took time to explain it very well. As the plates kept coming the service continued to be great. The food was very good. Overall I definitely recommend... More

It seemed to me that the food was not cooked by someone familiar with Indian food. [I am Indian.] One one dish -- gulab jamun -- was good in the lunch buffet. Everything else seemed to be fusion dishes. The service was good. The location was good. I didn't go back after one lunch. The price was also high --... More

Good service, good quality food but poor selection for a buffet (& $50 for 2 people). When we went they had Rice, veggies (cold & hot), naan (quite sweet), tandoori chicken, salmon & curry beef. No butter chicken, pakoras, mango chutney or palaak paneer (some of our favourites). Busy place, but we got a seat without a reservation for lunch... More

Outstanding food and great service. One of the best Indian places I have come across in a long time. The kebabs and the tandoor items are especially good and the chicken vindaloo is to die for.

We were in Montreal for a vacation and visited Le Taj for lunch. The buffet had assorted items including samosas, pakoras for appetizers and tandoori vegetables, naan for main course and gulab jamuns and mango barfi for dessert. And yes we are vegetarians so we had our eyes on veggie items only. I had ordered the dal makhani and tandoori... More

Great group spot. Start w a couple flavor of nan bread, then order lots of dishes. Any primary item (beef, chicken, shrimp, fish and vegetarian) available in a couple of flavored and degrees of spicieness. SHARE! All of ours, and the rices were fabulous.

Staying in Centre-Ville (Downtown)

Neighborhood Profile
Centre-Ville (Downtown)
Montreal's towering skyline is concentrated in the Downtown area, its nexus of commerce and commercialism. A suffusion of luxury hotels, flagship stores, high-end restaurants, and corporate headquarters characterize the neighborhood, which by nightfall transforms from a business district into a youth-culture hotspot, with hip bars, clubs, and restaurants heavily peopled by students and young professionals. The once-seat of millionaire's 'Golden Square Mile', an incongruity of stately mansions and dapper brownstones sit between glass skyscrapers, creating a visually lush urban landscape. Beneath the sidewalks lay the Underground City, the world's largest below-ground mall, a labyrinth of over 1,500 shops and eateries that echo the profusion of cafes, gallerias, cinemas, and fashion outlets above. From the scholarly array at McGill University to the carousing crowds of Rue Crescent, visit Downtown to shop by day for what you'll wear there by night.
