Went here with no reservation because we always like to eat at the bar. The place was packed and noisy with no atmosphere. There were 2 barstools open at each end of the bar. I asked to sit at 2 of the stools. The Greeter said they were reserved, Never heard that in my life. Told the wait was an... More

We were there for lunch and it was fine, nothing exceptional. The food was fresh but lacked creativity and presentation.

We always have a dinner evening a L'Express when we are in Montréal. We just love the style, decor, waiters and the old ringing phone at the entrance - it is truly authentic! Mousse de fois de volaille, salade de betraves, tartare et les frites, all just very good. Service professional and impeccable. We will be back.

A family member had suggested this place. It was a healthy walk from the Metro and the sign is actually on the sidewalk. We were casually dressed, but were welcomed and seated for an early dinner. Would suggest you make a reservation as the place gets crowded. Spouse ordered a steak that was excellent - just about licked the plate... More

We had a great meal at this archetypical French bistro. Our party of 10 had an early reservation and were seated promptly. We are a somewhat loud and goofy group, so I think that we put our waitress off initially, but she realized that we were harmless. After that, we had a flawless meal. We spent almost three hours in... More

L'Express has been serving wonderful classic bistro cuisine for many years. The dining room is adorned with pictures of past staff that remind you of those depicted in the film "The Shining". However there is no REDRUM but great RED WINE. Make a reservation as this bistro is on many recommended lists.

I had been to L'express in the 90s, and was eager to return. I was blown away by how the great cuisine I recalled had remained perfection. The beef tartare is reputedly the best in Montréal, and I think it was even better than when I had it all those years ago. The ile flottante was a cloud-like confection floating... More

I had the classic pot au feu and it was delicious. The wine list is great, the service is impeccable but you need to make a reservation in advance as the place is popular for good reason.

We were very lucky to snag a table just as they opened, and boy are we appreciative. Really the best meal we had in Montreal, and we didn't have better in Paris either! Everything we ordered was fantastic, the sweet breads, Lobster risotto, gazpacho, wines, desserts, all were delicious. Service was awesome.

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
