We have been for dinner frequently in the past .....service was polished without being stuffy or condescending ,attentive and alert .The food was delicious and well presented .Unfortunately the same cannot be said about breakfast this week .The waiters (2)were impatient WHEN they arrived to take our order and it took about 30 minutes for the small breakfasts to come... I went for a boys'night with my son. It was crowded and yet we felt that we were special customers. Excellent food and wine, great service, good value for money. To be repeated.

A classic french bistro with black and white photos of the staff doing it right for a long time in the trendy Plateau neighborhood. Staff and service impeccable and the food was great. Can be pricey but worth it.

Wonderful experience. I forgot that I was in North America. It really felt like I was in a Paris bistro. Food was excellent as you would expect from a terrific French restaurant. Service was great as well. Very busy and noisy place but this added to the experience.

Good food, excellent variety on the wine list and helpful staff make for a very nice outing. Decor is minimal and the place can have a crowded feel at times. Reservations are recommended as they have specific seating times. We were 6 with each choosing a different plate for both entrées and main dish. We tasted each other's and all... More

We dined at L'Express on new year's eve. Our table was ready at our reserved time with no delay. Although the venue is small, the background noise is pleasant thanks to high ceilings. L'Express has been a favorite institution for locals over decades. The motto seems to be: if you are excellent, why change? The food did not disappoint. Celery... More

It was packed, yet the staff found the time to seat us and talk to us, politely and with a smile. We were served promptly and efficiently. The prices are medium but, being that the place is Montreal's darling, they are really affordable, especially the wines. The grilled salmon comes hot, fresh-tasting, on a bed of spinach. The steak frites... More

L'Express is my wife's favorite Montreal restaurant and now it's probably mine as well. Service here is efficient and polite. The place is super busy but the ambience is very low key and has an old fashioned French feel to it. I love that there's a large palmed potted plant in the middle of the room. The food is excellent... More

Posh from the outside, welcoming and homely in the inside. Those cloth looking tablecloths on the outside were actually paper. The waiter was very accommodating and friendly when he learned we didn't speak French. We had no reservation- it was a rainy Monday night at 615pm. They squeezed us in, but were told we had to be out of there... More

A Classic French style bistro serving French classics. These are the sort of places you go to eat like a local. Always full of locals, always buzzing with activity. I got a bit adventurous and tried the bone marrow. Interesting dish indeed. Followed it up with a more conservative choice of corn fed chicken breast. The service can get a... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
