I have been going there since it opened it's doors 40 years ago. The food is great 99% of the time. My wife and kids love it and so do all of my friends. Food is authentic and not the usual Americanized Chinese food.

Don't let the functional look and gruff staff turn you off. The food here is authentic and excellent.

Fung Shing had been mentioned in a travel blog I was reading, and since it is quite close to our hotel, I figured that we should give it a try. The decor was pretty bland...but at least it was not dark. The place was clean, and we were greeted in French and English. When we responded in English, we were... More

The food was excellent but the atmosphere was fairly basic. We knew this beforehand so we were not expecting anything but great food at a reasonable price. They delivered and the service was excellent.

Our family decided to try Fung Shing based on TA reviews. We ordered spring roll starters, rice, Chinese Broccoli in Oyster sauce, Chicken and Shrimp in Mayonnaise sauce and BBQ Pork with noodles. All in all the dishes were pretty good with the exception of the BBQ Pork which was soggy and bland. The portions were very generous and the... More

My Wife and I stopped in here during our vacation and we really like the food here. All of the dishes were fresh and tasty as well as tasting authentic. Montreal is lacking in Chinese restaurants of high quality however I like this one and overall it was priced fairly.

Atmosphere is nothing much but the food...oh dear, the food! It was just two of us and we were staying at a nearby hotel so we couldn't take leftovers and ordered just minimal food. One wonton soup to share, it was so flavourful with bright crisp greens. Then we ordered white rice (bowl is refillable), #304 chicken with veggies and... More

In Chinatown this restaurant serves real Chinese fare, not adapted to Western wimpy palates! I was here with a Chinese and she confirmed. We had excellent Soupe pekinoise, very rich. Chicken with black beans was very good and so were the small porc cutlets. So much of each we took a huge doggy bag home. Polite and friendly service, if... More

If you like Cantonese food, this is the place for you. The menu is varied, but all traditional Cantonese. I had the chicken in black bean sauce which was tasty and has a bit more zip than many other milder Cantonese dishes. OMy husband had the Singapore Noodles, which he always enjoys here. We also ordered vegetables with vermicelli to... More

I visited Fung Shing on a couple of occasions for take out and dining. I was really impressed by the tastiness of the food and the savors of the various options. Although I think the restaurant is quite shady, I overall enjoyed the experience. Here<s how it went: 1- Location The place is located on boulevard St. Laurence in the... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Bakeries, markets, restaurants, and buffets crowd the brightly graffitied streets of Chinatown, the city's aromatic destination for pan-Asian cuisine. Distinguished at its entry points by towering vermillion paifang gates, the compact neighborhood acts as a focal point for the Chinese community, hectic with educational facilities, cultural centers, acupuncturists, and foreign-language newspapers. Especially vibrant in the warmer months, when the sweet smell of dragon beard candy along the pedestrian walks of Rue de la Gauchetière signal the beginning of the outdoor street fair season, Chinatown is a treasure hunter's dream, with enough knickknack and curiosity shops to tempt even the pickiest shoppers. The convivial vibe picks up after dark, when the area's active nightlife offers evening crowds their choice of drink, dance, and midnight snacks of pho or oysters. Chinatown's mix of new and old, with herbal remedies being sold alongside pop-culture DVDs, gives the area its own animated brand of moxie.
