We had walked past this restaurant several times going from McGill to downtown and one evening tried it out. Service very good, food delicious paella (plenty of varieties available). Good value for money.

Waitress was wonderful and attentive. Paella(including the seafood) was dry, over cooked, and lacked saffron. Carmelized pan bottom? Not a trace. And we got to the restaurant early, so it's not like they were too busy to pay attention. Let's hope they had an off nite.

We have been there with a large group of friends and ordered different types of paellas. Everybody liked what they've eaten, no complaints..

I was last at the restaurant in 1985 - and remembered it fondly(from student years). It is still as charming. The waitress (I believe it is family owned) was very helpful in negotiating the menu and portion sizes. The gazpacho was very nice as was the paella. There was another couple there with small children and they made them feel... More

I have been coming here for years, ever since I was an undergrad at McGill. No trip back to Montreal is complete without paella at El Gitano, plus a pitcher of their unbeatable sangria. We have done family parties here with 15 - 20 people as well as intimate dinners for two. Don't let the nondescript exterior fool you. The... More

As soon as we walked in, there was a weird smell, maybe burnt plastic? not sure but we decided to give this place a try anyway. We ordered the seafood paella and all of the seafood was overly cooked to the point that the rice was semi dry and the seafood was completely dry and rubbery. It was not a... More

First I want to say that it is a very cute and intimate restaurant with great energy, especially on weekends with the stage dancing. It's worth trying at least once! The service is very good and we enjoyed our food a lot. I enjoyed the gaspacho very much. We love seafood, and the paella was very generous in this regard.... More

This restaurant has been here for 40-50 years I'm sure, you wonder how they can survive! The heavy black entrance door is not too welcoming. But, inside it is small and cozy and rustic in style. Nice big shiny terracotta tile floor, a stage for entertainment (which there was none when we went) and simple decorations. The restaurant is old... More

After reading so many good recommendations here on TripAdvisor, we had dinner with our daughters tonight at El Gitano. When we arrived (it's Saturday night), we were promptly asked if we had a reservation (no), but were seated near the flamenco stage anyway. We eat very frequently in the Ironbound section of Newark which boasts many Spanish-Portuguese restaurants, so we... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighborhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colorful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
