Smith is EXACTLY the type of place you dream of stumbling on when in a strange city. That's what happened, we were ambling around not knowing what we'd find as found Smith, not very well signposted.. The service was super friendly The food was freshly cooked, thus 10-12 min wait.. And delicious.. Especially the deserts.. Beer was superb, Side Launch... More

This is a super cool place, three floors, awesome patio, and a great menu--be sure to try the homemade scones with lemon curd; lovely! It's a mid-range place in terms of cost, which is in line with the great food and very good service!

This was my second visit to Smith. It's a great place to go with a friend or two that you want to catch up with in a cozy and casual spot with delicious drinks and food. The menu is limited but I don't think you could go wrong with any of the choices. I had the Steak and Fries as... More

People visiting Toronto in the summer will notice something at many restaurants called "Summerlicious." This is a cross-city promotion supported by the City of Toronto. Participating restaurants feature a special prix fix menu (either 28 or 38 dollars, or more) featuring three courses, usually three options for each course. This is an established institution in Toronto. People go on Summerlicious... More

Great place with generally good service and good quality food. But on a few recent visits the music upstairs really made the experience quite awful. Angry, hard-core rap/hip-hop at absolute full blast made it very hard to carry on a conversation. Such a shame.Have to find a new brunch place for weekends.

A friend and I had brunch at Smith a few weeks ago. It was my first visit and it won't be my last. We sat on the patio, I noticed that even though there is a clear roof overhead, they still provided sunscreen, so thoughtful! The donuts which are freshly made and warm from the oven are delicious. I had... More

I read great reviews of Smith and was disappointed with the reality. I ate there twice on a recent trip to Toronto, first for lunch by myself and next, for dinner with a friend (I wanted to give it a chance). With lunch, the service was terrible.I ordered a hamburger, which came rare and also very gritty (I wasn't asked... More

We were staying at Hayden street so this was a logical choice for a weekend brunch. It's recommended to have the reservation in place as weekend mornings there can be busy. Won't recommend strollers there as there is no ramp or place to take them in. We were given a seating at the balcony which provided a decent view. Food... More

Okay, the Church street area caters more to the gay community (or gay-friendly/bohemian-cool), but this place is tremendous. No, it's not fine dining, yes you have to climb a fire escape to the toilet and yes the menu is limited, but hey. Even from downtown this place is worth a trip. The ambiance is superb, the setting delightful and the... More

I found this place while off my chosen path, that is slightly lost. I was hungry and thirsty. Saw this little covered yard, poked my head in and was welcomed in by a friendly face. Ordered fried chicken, corn bread and creamed corn with a Canadian black larger to wash it down. The large bottle of water was also much... More

Staying in Downtown

Neighborhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
