I don’t understand the reviews. My husband and I call ourselves ‘food snobs’ jokingly but it’s not far off. We both were literally shaking our heads in disbelief as we ate because the food was so amazing!!! This is not greasy cheesy Mexican but elevated,...interesting and quality food. The steak taco and shrimp were mind blowing. Service was as great. Atmosphere is stunning. I think for the food quality the price was totally reasonable. Come here immediately and support this little gem to keep it alive!More

The old bank building is very cool, nicely designed, food is “ok”. Nothing wrong, but nothing that wowed us either,. 6-7 bucks per small taco is steep. Menu is small, very much a bar menu. Nice night out but can’t see myself going back.

Mexican fare, mostly tacos, but also salads and a few other offerings. Cool atmosphere. Reasonable prices, considering the high quality of the food.

We had the nearly $27 nachos (that price included about 15 small pieces of steak) which was covered in what tasted like cheese whiz. Definitely not authentic, although the guacamole was okay. The atmosphere was nice, but I've had a better margarita at Applebees, the...one time I was there :) Really disappointing.More

I've been to La Carnita about 5 times now, and the food is always good quality. Unfortunately this past Monday, the customer service was bad. I had family visiting from out-of-province and wanted to take them somewhere nice in the Exchange District to see more...of Winnipeg. The ambience is always nice at La Carnita and we each ordered cocktails (margaritas and palomas are delicious) and 3 tacos each, plus another 3 to share as a group of 3. Unfortunately when the bill came, we had been charged extra for things we had not ordered, and then not been given the 'deal' for the tacos, as "if you share the tacos, you do not get the deal" ... it was very strange experience overall from our server, and even though we spent quite a bit (approximately $200), we were treated like criminals when they gave us incorrect information on the bill. As I mentioned, the food and drinks are quite good, but I felt quite embarrassed to have brought an out-of-town guest here, and had that customer experience as a representation of Winnipeg Thoroughly disappointing, and seemed very avoidable. I won't be taking family or friends here again, but wanted to provide a review overall of my experience this week.More

We've now been to La Carnita twice and have enjoyed it both times. This last time we took another couple and they as well loved it. The corn is amazing and all of the tapas are yummy.

Interesting menu offering some good combinations and flavours. Beer, wine, and cocktail list was quite extensive. The kale Caesar salad was good and had some nice flavours. Loved the Achiote chicken taco! The pineapple jalapeño salsa was oh so good as were the crispy shallots....Also enjoyed the crispy cauliflower taco, the Mexican chorizo taco, the mushroom tostados and the cotija cheese taco. Most enjoyable tastes. Only downside to the night was the noise level inside as there was a very loud birthday party happening.More

Tried the place randomly while walking in the exchange district. Menu was surprising (in a good way). They have the best chicken wing I've ever eat, but all the other meal I tasted there was wonderfull.

We were frequenting the likes of La Carnita and Grand Electric out in Toronto before this opened in Winnipeg and were sooooooo excited to see it here! The reviews here always astound me and maybe it's just the wrong crowd giving it a try. I...mean, the amount of people in Winnipeg that think Carlos and Murphy's is the be-all of Mexican food in this city is staggering. La Carnita is modern mexican done exceptionally well and it's shocking at how well priced the food is considering! The flavours are excellent, the menu is diverse and unique, and they're always consistent. Service is always great as well. The street corn is fantastic, even though the corn itself isn't always prime out of season; the flavours are just dynamite. My only issue here is the price of the cocktails (the ingredients warrant some of the prices, I'm just not interested in paying$15+ for a drink) though the margarita is one of the best I've ever had, and on Mondays it's half off at $6!!! They have great happy hour specials every day. I will say that if spice isn't your thing they can be a little inconsistent with the heat levels on their sauces and salsas. They usually have a fair bit of zip but some days it can be quite spicy. Good thing I'm done for the heat but my other half not so much! Lastly, this space they're in is fantastic, and yes the rap can be a little much sometimes but most of it is epic 90s and 2000s hip hop that we all grew up on (for those of us gen X'ers). All in all, one of our favourite spots in Winnipeg AND Toronto. I hope more people catch on so that it stays, as it's always dead when we're there (which is often!)More
